In this video we take a look at bench grounding as well as some grounding for the soldering irons. I have some things coming up that are quite sensitive and will need extreme care not to zap some FET gates. So I needed to tackle my lack of grounding on the bench as well as get some things ready future projects. SO here we go down the static rabbit hole and time to tackle something I should have done a while ago.
** Repair exposes the Tech to mains electric and should only be done by trained personnel. Errors can be fatal. **

I've done formal training on ESD control like this. In my opinion, you're def on the right track and I'm happy to see you doing this! ESD damage is insidious and often results in janky components or things that may fail in e.g., one year vs twenty. One thing to note, you DO want to use the electrical system ground for ESD ground, not a separate line to a ground rod. Reason is, via induction, voltage drop, or a fault, that can develop a potential voltage vs the electrical ground, and cause safety issues for both you and your equipment. Also, consider getting some Staticide, a spray you can use on carpets, hard surfaces, etc. Def helps cut down trouble, especially on chairs. Gotta re-apply a couple times a year. You can also use liquid fabric softener diluted in a sprayer, if you want to save a few bucks.

Hi, grounding is needed 👍 at my workplace, I made the grounding points myself and connected them to the main fuse using a 6mm cross-section wire. On the table itself I have two circuits, one uses green-yellow 4mm sockets and the other is green - green-yellow is hard ground and green sockets have 1M Nice day 🙂 Tom

Consider an ionizer as well. Even with a dissipative mat, wrist strap, and proper soldering equipment you are still at risk without an ionizer blowing on your work area. When I was working we had to do yearly ESD training and they had demos that would amaze you on how charges build up. All workbenches had one of the overhead ionizer with lighting, Simco Aerostat or similar. The smaller Desco work good too. There's a YT video from Disco, ESD Basics Q&A that has pretty good information as a starter. All air guns were ionizing as well. It's a very complex subject to get right!

Hello, I not only have an ionizer, a mat over the entire table and a bracelet, I also have an antistatic chair 🤔 .............. 🤔 I also have a very static wife as a bonus because my workplace is in the bedroom 🤣 Nice day 🙂 Tom

I once worked at a “micro business” where we built hi-fi speakers, heated with a wood stove. Nice that it used all our scraps for heat, but it was necessary to keep 2 large pots of water on the wood stove. We would evaporate about 6 to 8 gallons of water a day.

It is crazy how fast heaters dry out the air.

A lot of interesting stuff in this video! I hadn't heard of N2 solder irons before. But I am familar with the dangers of working around N2. My lab (biotech) uses liquid N2 for storage. Can I ask what field you work in/occupation? You certainly don't seem like just a hobbyist.

For more info on the N2 irons check out the 600 subscriber video part 2 found here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l69ieqh1p9reqn0.html I am thinking about upgrading to the newest series of Hakko irons because they added the N2 capability to the micro iron as well as the full side. My generator will also support both stations. In terms of work experience I have been a service technician for going on 30+ years and I still have quite a few to go before I am done. In those 30 years I have serviced a dizzying array of systems from the mundane to the exotic and everything in between. So far it has been a wild ride.
