In this video we take a look at a TM 503 Power Supply that was send in by a viewer. I was asked to give it a once over and run it through my check in and evaluation to make sure it was up to the challenges that they are going to put it through in their lab. We also find some REALLY bad parts in need of some TLC.
** Repair exposes the Tech to mains electric and should only be done by trained personnel. Errors can be fatal. **

I have a pile of TM frames with one or two bays that not everything works in. I’m right in the middle of building up a plug in that will have an LED to indicate every AC and DC supply connection, and will have an independently powered transistor checker for each of the remote Qs. Nothing fancy, just a circuit to indicate an open or shorted or functioning device. Besides having built in load resistor on each voltage, your problem with the DC rails tells me I should also put in terminals on the DC to be able to scope the ripple. Your video has enhanced my design.. thanks👍👍

I just added rear bnc connection for FG high Z output. Anyway, I found that this TM503 case was cracked in same spot. Someone had soldered it back together.

Did you look into why the transistor read funny in circuit . Those pass transistors don't connect to anything without a plug in so they should read the same ., soldered or disoldered unless there is something going on on the tracks or edge connectors

I believe it was probing error that was confusing the PEAK, And it is true the only thing they are connected to is the PCB so it was quite odd.

Did you mean to say that the TM5000's use switching PS?

Yes I might have gotten a bit mixed up. The TM500 is linear power supplies the TM5000 is switching supplies.

What are these used for? It's interesting but I have no clue what you would use these for. Think I've seen something like this in an ambulance once when I was a kid?

This unit is a power frame for the TM500 series modules from Tektronix. This is a WIDE range of equipment that can be plugged in to one of these and testing can be configured depending on the modules used.

In an ambulance it probably wasn't Tektronix but actually vaguely similar functionally : a power supply into which something else can be plugged in for access to vehicle power and for charging. But in that case it would be some unit used both in the ambulance or with the patient, like an ECG monitor or a defibrillator.
