Have you ever noticed that SLES is rated worse in clean beauty apps than SLS? What's with that? It's an interesting tale about a technology that's so useful it's everywhere, but most people have never heard of it, and it's kind of linked to drinking water contamination.
Subscribe for videos every fortnight: bit.ly/labmuffinyt
This video is sponsored by Croda, an ingredient supplier who have a line of biobased surfactants with low 1,4-dioxane, manufactured with 100% renewable energy for a lower carbon footprint: bit.ly/3uBIvfa
In this video:
1:01 Ethoxylation is talented, brilliant, incredible...
4:01 1,4-dioxane is... not
4:57 1,4-dioxane in your beauty products
6:58 1,4-dioxane in your freaking water supply
7:59 Where does it come from?
10:29 I make a bunch of predictions, we'll see how that goes

This is just a general problem of naturalism fallacy in skincare & medicine, but it sincerely bothers me how many brands equate the gentleness to its naturalness. As I have a connective tissue disorder, my skin is delicate enough that I have to be EXTREMELY careful about surfactants and exfoliation. SLS in toothpaste really damaged my mouth with the constant sores it caused. Controlling for that sensitivity is so, so hard when a lot of companies will use things as harsh as SLS, but shrug and call it a day because it's 1. natural, and 2. technically SLS-free. Really made it hard to figure out what good skincare looked like for me when starting out, too.

Fun fact: Margaret Thatcher was an extremely instrumental part of the success of the Montreal protocol. She was a chemist before she entered politics. Her background in science made her aware of how important the protection of the Ozone was. She used her position as an unequivocal conservative to convince other conservative world leaders (like President Reagan) that ozone protection was a worthwhile investment.

@@LabMuffinBeautyScience don't need to stretch yourself to be a Thatcher fan. The success of the Montreal protocol was likely more due to the support of Dupont, the producer of CFC's. Initially, Dupont was opposed to the treaty, but changed its position when it developed a replacement refrigerant and realized that banning CFC's would provide it with a captive market.

My allergies are so irritating that I am willing to take a little risk for a gentler effect. For me SLES takes about five days used daily to give me a rash whereas SLS gives immediate burning irritation. I have never noticed any other “eth” ingredients irritating me. But I sure don’t want to be contaminating water, better clean up those industrial sites.

I grew up there. We were taught vin 1965 that Long Island had artesian well water which was naturally filtered. Two years ago I saw a PBS,Weekend News hour on the water in the USA. Their example of bad L.I. However remember there's fresh water upstate and the Hudson River was a ness. If you buy Casino bottled water it is bottled by Coca Cola from the Atlanta, tap water. The ingredients to "filter" it are banned, as is Fasani, in the UK.

When cosmetic/self-care products are created, how is the 1,4-dioxane minimized? Is it separated out after the ethoxylation, and becomes waste, or is the creation of it somehow reduced? Seems like you might be saying that the low presence of the contaminant in our product compares favorably to other industries but I’m wondering if there’s still some by-product during the manufacture of cosmetics/self care products that are still in the blind spot.

At the same time, lawmakers don't always make the most informed decisions. Some laws are made for expediency, or as Michelle mentioned, to signal that action is being done, but either without enough teeth to the language or based on shoddy science (case in point, the Hawaii ban on certain sunscreen filters). Sometimes, especially with laws, it's better to move slowly with more caution than to start running in the opposite direction too quickly.

The point is for the cosmetics industry, they're rarely putting dangerous ingredients into products as the clean beauty industry would have you think. Dangerous cosmetics are the exception rather than the rule, because US law does require that cosmetics need to be safe, which has been interpreted to mean that the US and the EU have very similar guidelines. It's usually small companies that don't understand the guidelines that end up putting out dangerous products, if you look at recall lists. While I would welcome clearer regulation that would make it easier for indie brands to follow the rules, there's a general rhetoric that if the US switched from flexible regulation to the exact same regulations as the EU (which is just more explicit), there would be safer products, when in reality, the actual products would barely change, because US products largely follow the same regulations as the EU (apart from sunscreen, but that's a separate rant). I also think the real issue in all regions is that we need better enforcement rather than necessarily more legislation.

Correction: dioxane is not added to anything anymore intentionally: polyurethanes, PET, eo solvents, protection paints can have traces of dioxane, same reasons like cosmetics. Plastics like PE, HDPE, PP cannot have dioxane. Water purification: new membrane purification systems using MBR technology can eat dioxane, but this will come in decades to developing world. As for more sustainable products, well then, lets say i still stick to my synthetic products till speciality membranes hit chemical and cosmetic industry.

I’m sure there was a time when a bunch of people considered the serious health concerns around arsenic and lead in makeup, “fear-mongering”, the buzzword of the year.

Ingredient dirtiness and skin harshness have nothing to do with each other--not sure why you're tying them together. No need to imply EWG is bad and based on pseudoscience. It gives a range of 1-3 for SLES and 1-2 for SLS (the score being based on a few variables). Considering that not all sources of SLES will be of great quality and that even the best have some dioxane, that's an amazing score. If animal studies show a carcinogen potential, that's enough for me and should be enough for everyone--though it's not correlative 100% of the time. Why? Proving a carcinogenic potential in humans is likely thousands of times more expensive, laborious, and far more difficult. That said, I'm not sure what concentrations were used for these animal studies; I use ethoxylated compounds all the time.

The EWG have a reputation for being pseudoscientific for a lot of other reasons - see e.g. www.agdaily.com/insights/dirty-deception-ewg-dirty-dozen/ www.theecowell.com/blog/a-case-against-the-ewg kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rdGHi5VyvbTZqJs.html Peanuts are carcinogenic in both animals and humans, so is sunlight - a zero tolerance approach to carcinogens is pretty unnecessary. You can take that route of course, but saying it "should be enough for everyone" is just silly.
