Separation of powers? Government make law, they don’t enforce it. Law enforcement is the job of the police, CPS, and judicial system. The police investigate, the CPS charge and prosecute, and the judicial system passes sentence. The CPS are required by law to have a case strong enough to guarantee a realistic prospect of a conviction to issue charges. It’s the job of the police to build that case.

@@jamieeames8934 The OP is referring to Starmers' time as Head of the CPS, before becoming Labour leader.
@jamieeames8934
@jamieeames8934 Жыл бұрын
@@S-North no the OP specifically referred to the Labour GOVERNMENT, which is not the same as the Director of Public Prosecutions. But ok, let’s assume for a second the OP did mean that. There are two issues: 1) the DPP doesn’t make charging decisions, the local CPS office solicitors do, the DPP is the organisational head of the CPS and doesn’t make routine operational decisions they are there for strategic leadership. 2) The CPS can only work with what the police give them, it isn’t their fault if the police fail to build a strong enough case to persuade the CPS that the evidential test is met.

...Wrong Priority! Time for the Labour party to become known as the party that killed #Neoliberalism become the party that solved the Housing Crisis once & for all with Genuinely Affordable Housing for ALL, not just those in a "Priority need"(as has existed in the Nordic States unaltered for the last 40yrs unaffected by Neoliberalism's DESIGNED SCARCITY of supply to push rents & prices sky high & keep them there), time for the Labour party to become the party known for restoring Workers Trade Union Rights & require collective Bargaining by LAW (again as exists unaltered in the Nordic States for the last 40yrs) and to return to Strong Social Security (not "Welfare") as rights not "hand outs".

I agree profoundly. Scandinavian stated approximate most closely to the happiest countries practically attainable: low inequality, high educational attainment, high life expectancy, literacy rates, low crime rates (Sweden excepted), low rates of teenage pregnancy, high welfare provision and of course high levels of reported happiness plus the high taxes necessary to fund them. A special shout out for Finland where private education is ILLEGAL😃

1.1 million legal migrants came to the uk last year. Last year 200,000 Houses were built. This year the gap between those numbers is expected to grow. How is the party of open borders going to solve that problem? This lot get in, my properties will no longer be available to rent and the space will be used for storage. Not paying their taxes. And there will be millions doing the same. You cant solve the housing crisis by punishing home owners or landlords. When you put your country up for sale, you cant cry when its bought and paid for.

@@gordonjohnston153 well they run the organisation and set the strategic direction. Your faux ignorance would otherwise suggest that a chief Constable will personally make every arrest in their force, a chief fire officer personally putting on BA and running into house fires, chief ambulance officer personally attending each and every call-out. That is not so. Senior leaders, do not get involved in the routine operational decisions of their organisations.

The human rights lawyer against the law! Starmer's refusal to recognise Amnesty International's findings about Israeli apartheid isn't just a betrayal of Palestinians - it shows that his appreciation for human rights extends only as far as it benefits his career. The costs of the path Starmer has chosen are immense. It undermines international law by suggesting that one can pick and choose which breaches of law and human rights one condemns, and those which one is happy to be complicit with. It undermines a consistent anti-racism by supposing that stated opposition to racism can sit comfortably alongside complicit support for the most egregious form of institutionalised racism, apartheid. Finally, it undermines the core principles of solidarity which ought to be at the heart of the labour movement to stand always with the oppressed, and never with the oppressor.
