A passing thought… it’s a pity that a move to shadow International Development is even seen as a “massive demotion”. In a world of increasing tensions, mass movement of refugees, realigning power structures, etc. International Development should be seen as both a humanitarian imperative and an opportunity to project soft power and influence to mutual benefit. Good luck to Lisa Nandy in re-establishing this as an important post deserving of full cabinet status in the next Labour government.

It would be pathetic if this is factionalism, but it's hard to see how Nandy would accept the demotion if that's the case. She doesn't belong to a faction, and is one of the few MPs who uses her conscience on individual issues rather than just following received wisdom from any faction. It would be very worrying if Starmer wanted to eradicate that from cabinet. But it's true that, having been arguably the best media performer up till a year or so ago, she has been quiet recently. It could be that she has her own reasons for needing a less high profile role for a while. I hope that's it anyway, because if not, the anti-Starmer brigade would be proven right.

I am a Labour Party member, but I voted for Lisa Nandy the Labour MP for Wigan to be the leader of the party. I was happier to see that Angela Rayner became the Deputy Leader. Another matter which is annoying me and that is find out that Keir Starmer is trying to separate from the Unions after it turns out that The Labour Party have accepted a 2 million pound donation from the owner of Sainsbury's all because the former PM Boris Johnson and the present PM Rushi Sunak shouting from the Dispatch Box "you are being paid by the Unions aren't you" Rachel Reeves only 12 months ago stated that when she is the Chancellor Of Exchequer she's going to High Tax High Earners. But now she's not going to, probably because of the 2 million pound Donation from Sainsbury's owner

I am no big fan of Nandy, but to say that she hasn't made inroads against the Tories on levelling up as a reason for her demotion? What has she got to play with then? Labour has given her the following: Continuing austerity, Tory economic strategy and trickle down economics. Green industrial strategy on hold till economy picks up (with this strategy - never). No wealth tax, no tax on stocks and shares, no tax on banks, tech giants or energy giants. No big home building plans. Oh a windfall tax, private schools and non-doms? Negligible returns. Labour is dead as a movement for any positive change in UK life. Dress it how you like, but now a mirror image of the Tory party.

I'm not convinced it was anything to do with Nandy not selling levelling up enough. I've certainly heard her doing so. She's someone who is an excellent media performer but she doesn't really easily fit into any faction of the party. I disagree she is soft left, but then I wouldn't call her centrist or radical left either. In the leadership election she was generally the candidate for the right of the party and Starmer told a pack of lies to attract enough of the left. She tends to float around a bit and I suspect she had disagreements with Starmer on policy and he didn't think she was on side, so characteristically he purges dissent. I always remember when one of the shadow ministers resigned a couple of years ago at the party conference over the minimum wage offer he wanted being blocked, and Nandy wrote on twitter that she was sad to see him go. I sensed she didn't like the direction Starmer was taking the party in.

No such thing as radical left. The Corbyn era is dismissed as radical or extreme by the right of the party but its policies were to the right of the 1945 manifesto and would be considered part of the mainstream in mainland Europe and much of the rest of the world. It is a mark of how neoliberal extremism has captured British politics and forced the surrender of Labour since Blair ( except the Corbyn interregnum) to its poisonous embrace that moderate policies can be so easily demonised. There are right wing parties in the rest of Europe that would have no qualms about so called radical left policies here.

It speaks volumes about the state of UK politics that some regard Lisa Nandy as a heavyweight politician. She may be a good communicator by the standards of today but the bar is low across the board. Would many Labour MPs in 2023 be given Shadow Cabinet portfolios in the Kinnock/ John Smith era in the eighties and nineties or in government under Blair and Brown? Very doubtful. Any ambitions Lisa Nandy may have had for high office under a Labour government look likely to be over. I do not doubt her sincerity and she seems personable and down to earth, speaking 'human', unlike many politicians on all sides ( SNP excepted). The good news is that the eradication of the left under Starmer, will fall prey to the law of unintended consequences. Hubris will backfire on the right just as it did with the rise of Corbyn. Events, as MacMillan said.

I agree about Rosina Allin-Khan. I could not believe that she was not voted Deputy Leader of the party when she stood. She was the best candidate by a long way for a variety of reasons and would have been excellent in the role. I am voting Green at the GE ( I left Labour some time ago) but the calibre of many in the PLP is cause for concern. I do not see much evidence of many on the front bench being likely to prove to be very effective as ministers. It is a glaring weakness that will only become more obvious if Labour wins power. Though at the moment it looks like the wheels are coming off the Starmer project- the stance on Israel is appalling and also acting as a lightning rod for wider discontent on account of the attempt to eradicate the left. This is rebounding. He should be replaced as leader while there is still time before the election. It happened in Australia in 1983 and the Labour Party won.

You need to work on your sentence construction and thinking. It is Labour not labour and there is a full stop at the end of a sentence. Surely you know this? Similarly, you should be aware that councils have had their funding cut by nearly 50% in the last decade, the financial stability of a number of other councils is cause for concern, Tory Woking council has also been in the news recently due to its problems, hence it is not a Labour issue as you falsely imply. Your comment makes no sense either.

Not a good idea to make badly run councils a party political issue. Woking?

Haha, bless. You're acting as though these are politicians when anyone with a brain knows they are all glorified lobbyists of one type or another. 'Being an MP' is merely a facade. The country will never accept in enough numbers the current Labour party as being anything other than an aesthetic alternative to the Tories. There are MacDonald's staff reshuffles that carry considerably more weight in regard to the national interest.
