Was it Hey, Singapore? I loved that show too. I still remember the very first episode where they looked for the legendary Changi Tree. It was said to be a very tall tree over 20 storeys high that towered over the other trees in the Changi area. Unfortunately it was felled by the British just before the war. You can Google the old images of the tree. It definitely looked really tall and imposing, possibly the tallest tree that ever existed here. I'm very fascinated by the history of Singapore too.

Nice video folks! Very refreshing that you had the historic factual angle as well as the supernatural spin. More often than not shows are either of purely history or purely paranormal. But we cannot deny in Singapore both are part of our everyday lives!! Kent ridge park is one other location you folks should explore!

I had heard about the underwater tunnel linking Labrador Park to Sentosa. But the tunnels had collapsed midway underwater... as investigated in a TV series "Hey.. Singapore !!" back in the 80s or 90s. Even showed the possible 'entrance' to the tunnel. Me & my family had checked out the 'entrance' back in the 90s, after seeing the TV series.

It would be very expensive and near impossible to build a underwater tunnel those days engineering and technology.
@lightspeedrescue
@lightspeedrescue 3 жыл бұрын
@@SethyTan No it isn't expensive, the first underwater tunnel is built in 1843, by the British as well. Underwater tunnels were built throughout the entire WW2 by British forces, they were the ones who built all the sewage systems in 3rd world colonies and redirected rivers. Pretty ignorant to have the thought that just because it's old, it wouldn't exist. I am quite old, the underwater tunnel was true and was advertised as such in the past. Many documentaries were filmed about it, a few TV shows were also made back in the 80s about it too. No idea why they "retcon" it though.

Quite a stretch to call it a myth, it's factually true because of command decision and not exactly a myth. General Percival assessed and determined there's a high chance of a "North side Invasion" scenario in 1937, he has petitioned multiple times since 1941 to have guns shifted to face Malaya as the soldiers will not be able to defend Singapore for long due to lack of supplies(They had supply issues since 1939 because UK was focused on war efforts and appeasement policies in Europe due to Nazi Germany). Britain HQ, and Churchill specifically, left the decision to Percival's appeal to Air Chief Marshall Sir Robert Brooke-Popham, the Commander-in-Chief British Far East Command, which was the British Empire HQ in Asia. General Arthur Percival may be the CoC of Malaya Command, but the overall decision power is with British Far East Command. Robert rejected his appeal, citing supplies and logistics issues. So the truth is, as widely accepted by historians: Malaya Command believes north invasion will happen because of no guns, petitioned for west side guns to be turned and/or moved to face the north in anticipation of Japanese invasion. British Far East Command who has oversight over all Asia operations denied it, so Percival had no choice but to reposition and move their bases to the north to make up for the vulnerability instead. So tl;dr overall command don't believe Japan will invade from the north, local command does but don't have the power to reposition their defences. Arthur Percival is the fall guy, a scapegoat to cover up high command incompetence in the defense of South East Asia colonies. He's the only general ranked soldier to stay while his entire command ran away by boat when Japanese broke through the Johor defenses and entered Singapore. The only mistake he made was to surrender without scouting RJA's forces, as British Army outnumbered them 10 to 1. He was the guy who had the foresight and could have prevented the fall of Singapore, but also the guy who made the crucial mistake which caused the fall of Singapore.

I think for older Singaporeans, some of us may have ventured into these tunnels. I remembered during school days I visited the place and climbed down one (not sure if it is the same place?). There were rooms along the the tunnels and these were sealed off with grills. We were told that these rooms were used to house prisoners of war.

Not true. Why. I managed to tour the tunnel inside. 1 of the route was closed.. I suspect that leads to the tunnel to sentosa. I was told by my military regular friend he say this was kept confidential . In case of war we xan use this tunnel. That's why suddenly its close not to let public view. Giving reasons not safe . The concrete built was thick meant to withstand heavy fire

Mediacorp needs to fact check if the guy knows his stuff before putting this on, or at least go and rewatch your own TV documentary about said tunnel. The tunnel underwater broke, I have no idea why he's saying it never existed when all the past tour guides there always said it does up till Singapore's short period of tourism death in late 90s-early 00s due to the Asia financial crisis. I was quite excited to watch something about Labrador Park Tunnel again, I was disappointed when he was so ignorant about the history of it. He does not know his stuff.

Once again, it may seemed that our history may have been altered so as to make the British look bad. This would work in the ruling party's favour at that time to gain support from the public and to call for removal of British forces. What better way to remove the colonialism from SG than to have them be at fault and at blame. Interesting tactic and concept. Just my hypothesis here.
