Lady and the Tramp is a 2019 American musical romance film directed by Charlie Bean and written by Andrew Bujalski and Kari Granlund, and produced by Walt Disney Pictures. The film is a live-action adaptation of Walt Disney’s 1955 animated film of the same name, which was based on the Cosmopolitan magazine story of "Happy Dan, the Cynical Dog" by Ward Greene. The film stars Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux as the voices of the titular characters.

I think Disney might actually be doing something The nostalgia critic satirized with the Lorax. Where everybody goes to see the live action movies because of nostalgia but there’s no substance to the movie says the return to the original animated movies. They could theoretically next year coming up announce that the animated lion King, Aladdin, beauty and the beast, and Lady and the tramp are all coming out of the Disney vault with new DVD sets. They need it to be popular so everyone would go see them, but they needed to be bad so they would return to the originals.

The reason, Doug, why the original version had such grand animation is two reasons. One is: it was the first of the Disney animated movies to be shot in Cinemascope. So, they had to make it look great. The second is: it was very much a Walt movie. This was one of his favorites. Even though it is technically based on two other stories (one side being his animator, Joe Grant's actual story of his dog and his wife's baby), Walt was pretty involved with it and became a big project for him. Not to mention, a lot of the lead artists and animators worked on it. I mean, Eyvind Earl, Frank Thomas, Claude Coats... these are people who were saved for the really, really, artistic and beautiful things. So even if the story doesn't feel big - it's not based off of a fairy tale or a novel or anything huge - that's why the animation feels so important.

The original was done from the perspective of the dogs. We almost never say human faces; most of the time it was just the legs and feet, like in the scenes you showed. We see things at the floor level because that's where Lady is. Lady hears the people talking about things that have to do with Darling's pregnancy, but they never say "baby." (She's only explained this by her dog friends.) The women tell Darling that she looks radiant, the men joke to Jim Dear that the doctor hasn't lost a father yet. It was so cleverly done. Also, it's ironic that the movie remake acts as though people of different races were not treated differently, where as in the original, the DOGS had a strong sense of class difference amongst themselves. Even Jock called the Tramp a "mongrel," which actually sounds like a slur (although I know it isn't).

Funny story, the head animators at Disney were really really excited about the original Lady in the Tramp when they were making it. One thing I liked about this more than the '55 film was that Lady was less of a pushover and she and Tramp broke up on more amicable terms; they just didn't think they could work as an item because they came from two different worlds. Also, it gave Tramp more of a backstory: He was neglected and abandoned by his previous owners because they had a baby and he didn't want that to happen to Lady.

I mean in the original you could already infer Tramp's backstory simply by listening to him. The way he talks about the baby, you can tell that he was in a similar situation once upon a time. The difference between this remake and the original and that the original is smart and respectful enough to let the audience use their brains to fill in the blanks, rather than outright telling them. In this case, showing that really isn't an improvement honestly. Also, I wouldn't call the original Lady a pushover. She was a little pampered house dog forced into a strange, hostile environment and she reacts accordingly and fairly realistically.

They're doing like in Beauty and the Beast where the smartest guy in the town was the only black guy, and there were two interracial couples amongst the castle servants in an era when that was not at all common. Disney has been pandering to minority groups in their recent films by forcing people of color where their presence makes no sense. It's an attempt for Disney to say, "Hey look! We're not racist anymore!" while unwittingly coming off as a bit condescending in the way they pander. They want to maximize profit by making as many people happy as possible, and that's really what this is about. Believe me, the Disney execs don't give a damn about equality in their films outside of how their show of inclusiveness will net more profit from those who are fooled by such things.

It took watching this movie for me to suddenly realize that there's a suspicious lack of human characters in the original. Like, a human character will show up when the plot calls for it, but there are never any extras just going about their day in the background. I didn't notice it before, but I think it works in the original because it keeps the story focused on the dogs. I found the new version oddly distracting, not because of the unrealistic representation of poc for that time period, but because all the people in general made the movie feel way more cluttered, and occasionally took focus off of Lady and Tramp

Legal or not, this kind of racial mix would have been severely frowned upon at that time and place. I know that no one actually watched this movie, so most likely no one cares how inaccurate it is, but because it comes from Disney, you can't help but think that they modernized a historical period on purpose for 2019 audiences.

...That wasn't the point of the human characters in the original though? They were meant to be harder to discern or understand, especially since the movie is framed from the dog's POV who doesn't even use (or prolly know) their human names. The humans aren't meant to take the attention off the dogs or add more space and time where it isn't needed. I guess it says something if in order to enjoy this remake you have to miss or ignore many of the points in the original xD

I'm confused about why they kept to the same time period as the original. They had a more diverse cast and that's cool but why shove that into a historical setting where that probably wouldn't be the case? At least not without issues present at the time. They should have just set the story in the present day where the diverse cast would make much more sense and it would be a big change to the story. Probably not enough to justify the remake but they were already set on it so whatever.
@sarahjohns1555

I hated how they seemed to forget that most people can read dog body language - happy = tail wag, sad = tail between legs, play poses etc. They spent so much effort animating smiles and crap when we don't need a dog to smile to know it's happy. Homeward Bound was made over 20 years ago and managed to make batter use of dogs just being dogs without needing all the technology on the upside at least they didn't insult us with a theatrical release like Lion King

One of the best things about the old version is the "camera angle" when the dogs are around almost everything is shown at a low vantage point half the movie is just the humans legs. While we do see Jim Dear and Darling's faces you don't see them long enough to really remember them in detail. It's all about Lady's world and what she sees. The only reason we see a lot of Aunt Sara's face is to establish that she is sort of the bad guy in the film and we see the Italian singers to set the mood. From what I see of this new film they seem to showcase the humans more which is why the ethnic diversity really stands out to some viewers. The movie shouldn't be about the humans but the dogs we should be seeing the world through their eyes not the humans.

For me, the big problem with this film is the changes made just feel random. Scenes are cut and rearranged seemingly without any rhyme or reason, often at the expense of character motivation and development. The pacing is also really rushed, moving at about the same pace as the original, even though it's longer. I will admit, the opening credits, the spaghetti scene, the scene in the pound, and the fight with the rat are well done, and the acting is okay (though the actress who plays Darling should never sing again), but it's not enough to save this film.

There was just far too much focus on the human characters. The 1955 movie was told entirely from the dogs' perspective. We saw hands and legs because that's how dogs see people, when two humans were interacting we just saw how the dogs right acted to it. Here we frequently leave the dogs' world and see humans discuss matters while the dogs just wait at the bottom of the screen until we can return to their eye level. x

the example for the beginning: Yes dogs do actually lick their lips if they feel stressed or uncomfortable. But they might also do it if they are overly excited.
