“I think art is the second most beautiful thing in the world. I think nature comes first.“ Wow. I always had enormous respect for her but that attitude makes me once again realize how smart a person she really is. It wasn’t part of the discussion but mix in science on a tied second place and you‘ve figured out the world.

@@sirknitsalot9504 "science is a mix of both nature and art making it" I agree completely! Being a scientist myself (mathematician) I thought about the relation between science and art very often. What's interesting is that many of my colleagues in research are also excellent musicians with some of them even doing both (research and performing in a choir or orchestra) professionally. On the other hand you have the very interesting sociological fact that for almost all people in the world the Erdős-Bacon number (you can find it on Wikipedia if you don't know what it is) is undefined/infinite meaning that very few people are part of both the science clique and the acting clique of the social graph. I for one am very happy that I am able to appreciate both art an science as both enrich my life tremendously. I think on a personal level science is to nature what ears are to music as in both cases the former is the "sense" which allows you to truly "perceive" and appreciate the latter. Apart from that, the pursuit of knowledge and insights is one of the qualities of humans which make me proud to be a member of that species.

@@kstar1489 I understand, but when you call something "method acting" which already exists as a complex acting theory, you can't just mix in concepts from opposite schools of acting and claim them as "method acting". She starts out talking about "commiting to the art on a cellular level" which is what you would expect a method actor to talk about. Then she links it to her experience singing and embodying/honoring a music genre's history by feeling it pass through her, again very aligned with the philosophy of method acting. It's when she gets to the idea of voice and body as instrument that it departs from method acting. The way she talks about rehearsing an accent and thinking of your voice as an "instrument" the actor molds and uses to convey a character is more akin to other schools of theater, which is what you resonated with in her explanation. My problem is that usually method acting is glorified, misunderstood and put center stage as if other types of acting didn't imply hours and hours of rehearsing and training.

Cristina Safdarian I was thinking of them in their use in common parlance today, as in, "He was knocked out, and therefore unconscious," and a 'subconscious' gesture which is done without thought. The comment was made in a light-hearted vein. I nearly didn't bother to make the comment, as I wondered whether someone might jump down my throat for mentioning it and then go into the scientific meaning behind each, but thought that the humorous wink emoji would negate that. Obviously not. (I'm a native English speaker too, but I don't go on about it in an effort to appear more intelligent than someone else, nor do I make comments based on someone's gender.) Have a lovely day.

It makes so much sense to practice the accent every day. It's VERY hard for English speakers to emulate a Latin language accent, and do it as well as she did. When you have that muscle memory you don't think so much about "oh gosh, is my accent credible?" but you just concentrate on being in character and living those emotions. Another good analogy is driving a stick shift. In the beginning all you can think about is "oh shit am I gonna roll backward, am I gonna stall, am I gonna grind the gears?" and after a while your feet just know what to do and you're focusing on the road and the foot action is natural. Bravo Gaga! Bravo!
