Soldering panels for a stained glass lampshade isn't much different than soldering any other 2D project. In this demonstration, I go through soldering a panel, from start to finish. I also suggest a process sequence for soldering all of the panels for your lampshade. Be sure to check out my "Soldering a Small Panel Lampshade" to see how to construct it into 3D!

Hi, I'm just getting started working with leaded glass. What is the purpose of the foil wrap on the outside of the glass?

Hi~ Foil is just a different method of constructing stained glass. When you construct with lead came, the panel gets built by cutting individual strips of H-shaped lead cames to fit in between individual pieces. The soldering involves 'tacking' at all of the joints. In the copper foil methods, each piece is carefully and evenly wrapped and sealed with foil tape, and then the solder is applied to the copper all around the pieces. Foil is a newer, 20th century method, and it allows for making both flat and 3D objects. Lead came is primarily used for large, flat windows, with some exceptions. Hope this helps? Thanks for watching!

LadyBerz Thank you. Your videos have been very informative. They have filled in some big gaps in my understanding of the methodology of of this field.

would it be better to solder the reverse side of the panel first, then just solder the front side after that?

We've discovered that that trick works very well with all flat panel stained glass projects! Set it up face down, tack and solder back side first. Glad you picked up on that. The back side tends to turn out better, then we wish it was the same quality on both. Thanks for the comment, and for watching :)

How do you remove small broken pieces of glass from a Tiffany shade?

If they are still attached to the foil, you have to get in there with some pliers and pull the bits out of the foil. I hate to use this comparison, but it’s like a dentist pulling loose teeth.

Can I salvage the lead from a plain beige hanging lamp mid 60s-?

Not sure about that... I'm not super familiar with working with lead came. I imagine if it's not twisted or mangled, and doesn't have a lot of putty residue on it, you could!

I have inherited a large antique stained glass hanging lamp. It is complete but 2 panels are very loose and needs repair. I'm afraid to transport as I worry I could worsen it's condition considerably!! I have dabbled in stained glass in the past, but I'm no pro!! Thinking I might tackle it myself while it's hanging in my garage. Any advice??

oooooh, that's a bit tricky.... I'd try to get two people to help detach and lower it down. Working on it in place is extremely delicate, especially when those repair spots might be weight-bearing. Might have to find some experts in your area! Best of luck!

@@LadyBerz thank you for your advice. I recently read where you could use an epoxy and glue together from the underside...do you really want to do that to a beautiful antique glass shade? I mean I have considered it, but nah...I just don't think it would be right!! Thanks again.

Agreed! Sometimes, though, desperate times call for desperate measures! Epoxy can be a last-ditch lifesaver for some things :-)

Doesn't lead come from the earth? I saw one guy that just saved all his scraps and melted them together and re-used them. Cute lampshade

+onetwothree57 Yes, and I do reuse a lot of it. I know which guy you're talking about who just melts it all and pours it into bars. I'm terrified of doing that myself, because of the harmful fumes that rise from melting that much at once. I now just tack together the short bits into longer strands. Thanks for watching! :-)
