When I lived in Edmonton, Alberta in Canada, there was a statue downtown that was in memory of the nazi. It is weird how the soviets were demonized, yet Nazis are quietly praised. It is called The Roman Shukhevych statue
@lif6737
@lif6737 Жыл бұрын
Well there’s a very large Ukrainian diaspora in Alberta, many that came after WW2 fleeing the USSR. I doubt the average Albertan knew who Shukhevych was, let alone his collaboration and participation in the Volhynia massacres. My opinion is that it should be taken down, but I believe it’s on private property

I live near Edmonton! There’s a ton of Ukrainians in Alberta, even my family is German/Ukrainian and I’ve always been outraged about that statue in the city since I found out it exists, and who he is. The graffiti that’s blessed it over the years isn’t enough, I wanna take a sledgehammer to his stupid Nazi face ♡

When the narration came to the Tashkent park, it became seriously sad. I don't know if it has to do with something specific that I've seen before, but devastation of the monuments celebrating kindness and peace really hit me hard. In Russia we often see Soviet public art with its warm-hearted motifs neglected. A lot of it is in abandoned buildings, sometimes visited by «enthusiasts». I've been there, but haven't felt the same as when I heard about the Tashkent park. I think it's because it brings me again the feeling that most Russians and Americans imagine each other in terribly stereotypical images and genuinely aren't interested in understanding the other.

In late Soviet Union and later in Russia there always was a great fascination with everything western and especially American. People here adored foreign films, music, history, clothes and even stuff like bubble gum. Children on the streets played cowboys and Indians and brag to each other with their pants they "cooked" to look like jeans. It was considered normal to collect stuff like empty cans os soda or cigarette packs. And that's just the stuff I remembered from the top of my head.

Bela Lugosi was the original Dracula for universal and a horror icon, but what would be of interest to you is that the reason he came to the US is because he was actually a supporter of the Hungary Soviet Republic, who fled the white terror. Like one of the most recognized actors in the world was a support of Bela Kun. Great leftist history there, worth looking into

I remember this sub! My dad and I toured it a couple times when I was 6-7 years old and I was completely enthralled by it (I've always liked submarines partially because of my dad - He was a Nuclear machinist mate on CGN-9). Though not old enough to remember more of the gross aspects of the tour 😬. The one other thing that I vaguely remember though, was a part of a video that they played in the lobby before entering the sub: It was a dramatization of a certain part during the Cuban missile crisis (the October crisis) which showed a US destroyer dropping practice depth charges on B-59; and how we as a world narrowly avoided nuclear war thanks to the actions of Vasily Arkhipov. Thank you for bringing back some fond memories of mine and for all the insightful content that you produce!

The pictures of the 'Cobra' rusting away are sad. Too bad they don't see fit to preserve it. There is a German U-boat museum in Chicago. Wonder why the nazi boat is so well-preserved? It should be a solemn place to honor those killed by such machines, but really kids run through it laughing and goofing around. But we romanticize nazis (and movies like Das Boat tell the story of patriotic Germans who fought honorably while rolling their eyes at nazi civilian leadership). Meanwhile communists keeping the peace against the nuke happy imperial aggressors are just a joke to us.
