Julia stands in a lift attached to a date tree to learn how they grow for her Cheese Stuffed Dates. Included on the menu are Cheese Stuffed Dates Broiled with Bacon, Kentucky Ham Mousse and Laid Back Turkey with Mushroom stuffing. Chef Jim Cohen of Denver’s Tante Louise is the guest chef and Dr. Richard G. Peterson of the Monterey Vineyard in Gonzales, California is the wine expert
About Dinner at Julia's:
Julia Child sources fresh ingredients then prepares a special menu with a distinctly American accent. Centered around a weekly dinner party for 10 hosted in a mansion just outside Santa Barbara, Julia is joined by chefs from premiere restaurants around the country who share their techniques and specialties, plus California vintners who offer selections to pair with the evening’s dinner.
About Julia Child on PBS:
Spark some culinary inspiration by revisiting Julia Child’s groundbreaking cooking series, including The French Chef, Baking with Julia, Julia Child: Cooking with Master Chefs and much more. These episodes are filled with classic French dishes, curious retro recipes, talented guest chefs, bloopers, and Julia’s signature wit and kitchen wisdom. Discover for yourself how this beloved cultural icon introduced Americans to French cuisine, and how her light-hearted approach to cooking forever changed how we prepare, eat and think about food. Bon appétit!

I think the series Dinner at Julia's is my favorite of all her series. She seemed to be building up to this type of format from her earliest shows, always taking you into the dining room and serving her guest.

In all the years I've been watching Julias shows, I had never seen this series. She's clearly in her element and enjoying this chapter of her life. It doesn't get any more 1980's than the overall food styling and party atmosphere!

It's such a pleasure to see fancy dishes prepared. Probably I will never make any of these dishes, but I always learn a lot from watching them being made. I am really sick of today's cooking shows that make the most dumbed down recipes possible. I don't need a show that shows how to make a salad of radishes, cubes of ham, and cherry tomatoes in oil and vinegar.

People have got lazy I'm afraid, it's the inevitable result of convenience foods and takeouts becoming the norm, as people have less time and more money.

1:58 This episode's worth watching for the sight of Julia Child in jeans alone! She was a stunning 6ft 2ins tall with wonderful, long legs her husband was very enamoured of and frequently complimented (he said her legs were one of the reasons he fell in love with her!) So she looked great in jeans and trousers, though she rarely wore them. I love how she threw herself into these little location films, whether she was joining in with the date pickers, or trying her hand at deep sea fishing on a trawler, riding the waves wearing oilskins! What a sport she was - and what incredible energy and love of life she had. I miss her.

Maybe the most striking part of this episode is the menu: no one would ever make turkey in any form for a dinner party this fancy today, unless it was Thanksgiving. Not that there’s anything wrong with it-it would just never happen.

@@jimbo477 I don't doubt it - in later years when asked for the secret of her long life, Julia replied: "Red meat and gin". If you were invited for an informal supper at Julia's you'd likely get a simple steak cooked to perfection as you like it, and as much booze as you could handle! She was no food snob, and appreciated the power of quality ingredients, simply prepared so the natural flavours shone through. This TV format is about entertainment, first and foremost. I doubt the viewers reproduced many of these elaborate dishes at home. But it's great fun watching them being made!

0:59 Dick may be sporting the most cunning and elaborate comb-over I have ever seen. Male hairdos as contrived as that, went out with the formal dinner party - more's the pity! You have to marvel at the artistry, determination and staggering delusion involved in working that hard to hide male pattern baldness. God bless him!

An odd comment by the winemaker-“Burgundy is just a generic name for red wine in California.” He should have clarified that Burgundy isn’t actually a name for ANY California wine, it only applies to actual Burgundy from France, which is usually 90% or more pinot noir, not a blend at all.
@Isabella-nd3rq
@Isabella-nd3rq Ай бұрын
Maybe he meant that’s what people “say” in California when they mean red wine. I’ve seen him in other episodes and he knows his stuff.
@glamdolly30

Agreed, it's somewhat bizarre when Burgundy by its very definition, is French, and most definitely not American!
