The thing I love about these two is that they are so authentic with each other. I don’t feel a sense of “show” toward the audience-is. In fact they seldom talk to the viewers which I find refreshing. And the repartee between them is so great. I always feel as if I’m witnessing something important from these legends of gastronomy- and in fact- I am. Thank you so much for posting these. They are one of my favorite cooking shows to watch.

They are great. And such care is taken with each other and every aspect of the meal they prepare. You can just see the wheels turning when they are in the kitchen together. Good stuff!

Jacques and Julia might be the greatest cooking show ever made, or ever will be made

What's so relaxing about this show is its completely lack of haste. Today's cooking shows would have done a recipe in the time it takes Julia and Jacques to roll their theme song.

They worked so well together. Even when they disagreed it was never personal, they just had different opinions which gave us two different ways to do things. I find myself coming back to these shows even though I've seen them all several times over the years.

You don't get great shows like this anymore. Now it's nothing but drama, stress, bad jokes, embarrassments, etc. Such a shame. This is way better than any reality tv BS they show nowadays.

PS: THIS IS FROM THE 1999 PBS TV COOKING SHOW(NOW ON DVD TOO) ALONG W/THE BOOK OF THE SAME NAME, "JULIA & JACQUES COOKING AT HOME." (RIP) JULIA CHILD, THE WORLD'S FAVORITE AT HOME CHEF WHO STARTED THE TREND W/THE 1960'S TV SHOW ENTITLED "THE FRENCH CHEF." THAT SHOW IS ALSO ON DVD. GREAT MEMORIES. I BELIEVE MR./ PEPIN IS NOW SEMI-RETIRED & HIS LAST PBS COOKING SHOW WAS CALLED "JACQUES PEPIN-HEART & SOUL." IT'S ALSO ONN DVD W/THE COMPANION BOOK OF THE SAME NAME. CHEERS TO THESE TWO LEGENDARY TV COOKING STARS.

I can't have my meat super well done like that, but I can tell they know what they're doing. REallly nice, brings back memories, but old fashioned cooking according to my taste. Using port wine alone for cooking a home meal today will already cost a fortune

If I saw a cut that large in my market I may get confused thinking I’m at an aquarium/museum/zoo... even in professional kitchens I’ve never seen anything that large besides a whole animal that hadn’t been “broken down.”

He had to explain that need crystallization of the meat in order to make the sauce is necessary and that a non-stick pan won't do that. He also had to tell her that the gauge of the pan is what determines the quality of the pan and whether or not the meat will burn. I'm amazed she doesn't know these basics. I'm a home cook and I know them. She's fun but cooking wise she's never cooked in a professional kitchen whereas Pepin has been cooking professionally for 70 years and was private chef to three French Presidents. She's not even remotely close to his level. Even she said that it's nice to work with Jacques as he's a professional and she's only a home cook. Look back on this series to find it.

This episode was not very visual compared to most of the others in the series. I guess producers hadn't yet figured out the food porn formula in the 90s.
@Gardis723 жыл бұрын
I love these shows, but I can't help but to think that Julia Child, who was a master chef in her own right, was relegated to observer status on these shows. It was all about Pepin and he seems to be teaching her, actually.
@MrStartrek53 жыл бұрын
So I got this feeling a tad too, but she was 87 already at the time of filming of this show. So I think Jaques did a lot of the 'leg work' to help her out a little.
@brendairwin2573 жыл бұрын
Absolutely not. And the proof is that Julia did not give that attitude 😊 Two old friends doing what they do best and loving it.
@georginatalamo24513 жыл бұрын
They are perfect together, exactly because of her age and stature and his energic teaching talent, both with reverential humility and respect. Rare.
@Will_DiGiorgio3 жыл бұрын
Actually if you listen to Jaques Pepin tell a little inside story about this production Julia picked the majority of the recipes and could be very stubborn about what she wanted in the shows. He said they argued quite a bit about it and he had very little say, argued as very old friends do. Jaques is a natural teacher, so thats why he goes into so much detail... Not only was Julia 85 and probably slowing down a touch, but from what I've read she loved other people to do all the cooking!
@wxkh11933 жыл бұрын
she was headstrong and picked all the recipes for the show and sometimes went as far as antagonising sponsors in front of representatives of said sponsors. she and jacques argued a lot and were very, very good friends, but she was also 87 years old when this was filmed. you can’t just cut and debone move around the kitchen as fast as someone 23 years younger than you, you know so I think that’s why it was filmed as julia more of a commenting teacher and doing lighter work. they had already taught classes together at boston university by that point so they knew how to work well together. two legends tbh
