Thank you for the great rigging technique. Spent many trips on different lakes trolling for lakers because that's what everyone I knew told me that is what I needed to do to catch them. We might have caught a couple trolling. It just wasn't working out. So I came across this video looking for a better way to fish for lakers. After seeing this I took my son out on the boat to try it. We had one of the best fishing days I have ever had. We caught so many I lost count. My son had never caught a laker before. They all were from 5 - 10 lbs. A heartfelt thank you for sharing this. Gave my son and I a memory we will have forever.

In this video I’m using a 7ft med heavy Cabela’s pro guide rod. The reel is a Cabela’s baitcaster made by Daiwa which Cabela’s doesn’t sell either anymore. I like jigging for lakers with a baitcaster but some people don’t. Preference really. Definitely worth trying one if you haven’t, lots of control and you can get some fast retrieving baitcasters that will help with fishing for lake trout!

There are a lot of baits you can try. For vertical jigging I would base the size of your baits off the water you fish though. Hair jigs, Bondy baits, ripping raps, tube jigs, jigging spoons, cicada's, or even try drop shotting ciscoes or bait depending on the regs in your area to name a few to try for sure.

Went fishing in a group once. The owner of the boat gave everyone a rod with a large green tube Jig. Then one person got a white tube Jig. He said the idea was all the movement of the other jigs would bring the fish over, and the fish would zero in on the white jig. Then we would just pass the white jig rod around and give everyone a chance to get one.

The lead has built in eyelets on each end. The top end you connect to your line the bottom you add a split ring and your hook. They don’t really move around easily inside the tube you need to press them in and pull them off. Just buy the right size weights for the different size tubes you are using and you won’t have a problem.

You’ll want to find key structure points where baitfish get trapped or frequent. Look for gradual rocky drop offs or even sand. You’ll also find them on deep structure such as mid lake reefs either on top or around the edges. Look for the key structure then search on it or around it with your graph to pinpoint them then break out the jigs

You have to put them together yourself as nobody makes a pre rigged one this way. Just make sure they are the straight ones not the curved mooching style ones. Split rings and #1 treble hooks can be found at any tackle shop aswell. If you don't want to go with the 5" tubes you can also downsize everything to fit your needs. A 2-3 ounce line weight fits well in standard tubes.

Are deep drop offs good for big lake trout?
@darylgilbertoutdoors
@darylgilbertoutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
They can be for sure. It's all relative to the water you are fishing though. If the deep drop is near the deep water that holds Lake trout during your summer months you can bet you'll find some nearby.

I’ve had better luck for big Lakers on flats shallow or deep not too far from shelves. Most assume because of these videos that their mostly on ledges.

@@MountainStateAngler Im not fishing the ledge. I said there's one behind me in the video that they come up to the flats that I am fishing. In this video I'm fishing a big sand flat with virtually zero structure other than the odd depth change.

@@darylgilbertoutdoors i know I watched the whole video. I was responding to the guy above. I guess I could have written my message better when I said “these videos” I think I heard the word drop offs when I wrote that. But a lot of videos lead people to think drop offs or ledges are where you get the big fish. :D

How deep are u fishing here
@darylgilbertoutdoors

In this video I was anywhere from 20-60 ft. This water is unique though in the fact that the Lakers don't go deep on this waterbody because it is so far North the water is always cold.

Looked like a nice day ......Still the go to way for them with the tube jigs>>> Can't wait for my state to actually get around to stop doing publicity thing of the no heat electric during winter months , no fishing etc etc that they were sharing with someone else promoting .... To going back to normal again so I can get out fishing again hit some lakers up .. NIce day also

Try it next time without the Tube, just the weight, you'll be surprised. Maybe not so much just jigging on the bottom, but on the chase, they will hammer it.

@@darylgilbertoutdoors my customers catch lake trout on lake superior up to 50 lbs with 12-15 lb flouro leaders and using jigs up to 8 oz. Highest lb leader I've ever used for jigging lakers is 17 lb and that's an overkill.
@darylgilbertoutdoors
@darylgilbertoutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Different waters require different set ups. With the rock structure we normally fish around and the possibility of catching a 50 plus lb fish, I'll stick with the 30 lb fluoro. When a client breaks off a trophy fish boat side due to a light leader usually they're not too happy about it. The small difference in diameter of the line especially when running fluoro doesn't effect the fish or action of the bait where we are so its not a problem for us.

@@darylgilbertoutdoors if you look up where I fish.... it's a 5x1 mile rock called "stannard rock" home of the best lake trout fishing in the world. Was only trying to give ya some advice....but, then again, you are the one posting videos giving advice. I'll still hold to my comment and say 30 lb is an overkill. But, different strokes for different folks I guess

Everyone is definitely different. I as a guide take pride in landing the clients dream fish, after time guiding you realize the guests could care less about a light line bragging title than they do having boat all their fish. Everyone is definitely different but it’s like the guys who brag about getting 2lb bass on light mono. It’s like cool but I’m not baking your congratulation cookie for you. I’d love for you to send me some 50lb trout like Daryl here has got and I’ll be the judge if you’re all talk or if you can give us some help. Please my Instagram is emmm72 I’m waiting :)
