I feel like this „german-behaviour“ of not randomly talking to strangers and not beeing on a „friendship-Level“ with them is often labeld as rude while I as a german always thought of it as beeing respectful. It’s not that i fear making a conversation but i just don’t want to bother anyone by starting a conversation out of the blue. Idk maybe we all are just more introverted 😂
@levync2140

I actually just remembered an example: if a granny would ask me and my friends what we are up to while idk waiting for a bus it could evolve into a really cute conversation with an elderly person for which we are just like a quick entertainment but if I would start that conversation it would feel like me mocking them … at least for me. Maybe my friends and I are just weird for thinking this way but I would rather mind my own business than getting on someone’s nerves 😂

I am a Romanian living in Germany and I think it is a matter of respect as well. I am an "extroverted introvert" and I can say that even in Romania, where people have some Latin, extroverted blood, they still think it is off-putting, if not rude, to address strangers as if they were friends. I like my personal space and I respect other people's space as well.

As for the acid reflux thing, one possible explanation could be that a lot of food additives that are still commonly used in the US have been already banned in the EU.

Bottle deposit in Oregon is 10 cents and this has increased people's interest in turning them in. If it is difficult to return them, someone without a car or bicycle may find it impossible to turn them in. I found healthy whole food to be much less expensive in Germany, so it seems 25 cents/bottle and making it convenient to turn them in would make a big difference helping one get by.

In German one can say “Einen schönen Tag noch” or more formal “Ich wünsche ihnen noch einen schönen Tag” to express the same ‘sentiment’ of “Have a nice day” as a parting phrase.

Blue Jeans - we are wearing them since the sixties. There was sort of a youth rebellion at that time, young people stopping to respect our tradtions - so they also stopped wearing fine clothes, wearing jeans and indian blouses and so on. When those people became older, they still adhered to this new cultural style. When the party "die Grünen" were in the Bundestag for the first time (I guess it was in 1982), they would wear jeans and wollen pullovers - which they were knitting during the sessions of the Bundestag. Meanwhile, they are wearing Anzug as well, but when they are together with other "green" people, some of them are still wearing jeans and woolen pullovers.

Concerning "No shoes in the house": to me it is less about cleanliness, but about coziness. Maybe back at my parents it was more about cleanliness, while now in my home I don't have a problem to got with shoes into the kitchen for example to fill the grocery into the fridge when I come back from grocery shopping. But it just feels weird to sit at my desk, the dinner table or especially the sofa and watching netflix while having my street shoes on. When I visit friends and I take off my shoes, some say "No, not necessary, you can keep the shoes on", then I still take them off. At least when I stay there for a chilling evening.

As an Irish man.. we have homeless and I've been to Germany they have homeless... ive been to San Francisco a few times... nothing prepared me for the amount of homeless people on the streets especially with mental health problems..they were talking to sign posts on the road.. shouting at people... and people would rather step over them in the street.. i seen people looking through bins and no shoes on them... it actually disturbing.. there is no helping for them.. and what's more the general public don't care about them either... or the government

I understand about the clothes on the bed. But that's not a general thing in Germany (I would say). For example, my friends always throw their clothes on my bed when they are with me for breakfast and my wardrobe is already full. It bothers me visually at most, but touching my bed doesn't bother me. By the way, I am also moved to Hamburg! And I love to come back to our great city by train!

Acid reflux: That you should avoid (medication or the right food) by all means. I didn't notice it very often on me. But when I got a gastroscopy I was diagnosed with scars from reflux in the esophagus where is goes into the stomach. They actually reduce the diameter and sometimes, when I gulp too large (or dry like rice) a chunk, the food gets stuck. So perhaps have a check whether there is already something so you can get medication (antiacid) to prevent that. My two cents.

I’ve encountered homeless* people in Germany that yell at you for no reason, although it is rare. And usually it is someone that is already talking to themselves or yelling and throwing insults at nobody in particular. Cutting them somewhat of a wide berth normally is enough to not get bothered by them. I once made the mistake of getting too close to such an individual (I wanted to sit down on a bench at a tram stop and the person was standing right in front of it). That resulted in the insults now aimed directly at me and half a beer bottle being emptied onto me. *They might not actually be homeless but having at least momentarily some mental issues.

Yea met several troubled people while growing up here in Germany. After a few times getting talked to/yelled at by different people with similar behaviour noticed that they were mentally ill and mostly just yelling at invisible people standing next to me, or just being pissed off and very very drunk (probably alcoholism caused mental illness). But never had the feeling ob being unsafe, and they were positively surprised when I just started talking to them directly and asking why they yell at me. Turns out they were nice people but mentally ill. And in Germany generally you don't get just randomly picked up and put into a mental clinic without someone directly reporting you (most of the time the other family members send you) to the police/emts while being judged as danger to yourself or others. At home I wear no shoes and walk around in socks (to the great annoyance of my father for over 30 years now 🤣. He is a hardcore house shoe guy), and do not have "inside" and "outside" clothes. I wear just normal jeans, t-shirt, sweatshirt at home, outside or sitting on my bed 🤷‍♂️.

As far as acid re-flux, I discovered that coconut oil was the problem. Coconut oil is considered a healthy oil, therefore people cook with it, use it like butter and many health foods and even regular processed foods may have coconut oil instead of the more traditional oils in the foods. When I made sure that the coconut oil was eliminated from what I ate the problem went away. When I suspected coconut oil, I did an internet search and discovered that there were a small number of people talking about coconut oil that discovered that coconut oil was also a problem for them. For some people coconut oil causes the valve between the stomach and the esophagus to malfunction. I suspect that there are a few people with acid re-flux because of coconut oil that do not realize that coconut oil is the problem. Maybe what helped me will help someone else that does not realize that they might have a problem with coconut oil.

Many homeless people in Germany are alcohol addicts. Apart from withdrawal symptoms such as sweating, shaky hands, vomiting, nausea, and insomnia, alcohol addicts who are trying to stop drinking (or sometimes have no money to buy alcohol) can experience a condition known as delirium tremens, which can be a life-threatening long-term alcohol abuse effect. Its symptoms begin to appear from 6 to 96 hours after the last drink, sometimes more. They are a result of nervous system changes that occur as the body tries to adapt without alcohol. Typically, people who experience it have been drinking heavily for years. Delirium tremens is a psychotic condition involving tremors, visual or auditory hallucinations, intense anxiety, and disorientation, which alcoholics can suffer from. Because of this hallucinations they begin to yell or throw things. They are not aware of it.

American food, especially fast food, is often tastier because it has more fat, sugar and often even flavor enhancers. The body is programmed on these substances, but it makes it also unhealthier and especially the high amount of sugar (not so much the fat) makes you fat

With enough Monosodium Glutamate you can make anything taste good. In Europe it's considered an additive, and is more strictly regulated, with limits on how much and which foods it can be used in. In the US Monosodium Glutamate is considered a "natural flavor", and manufacturers don't have to specify the amount of natural flavors used in food.

In US food are lots of chemical flavour enhancers in general (very likely the reason why you find it soo tasty) and those are for the very most part forbidden in the EU for a health reason (very likely the reason why you don´t get acid reflux while being back in Europe although eating "junk" like chips). It would be interesting what you meant with "eating healthy" ...because when you eat organic/bio in the US (but which is very very pricey over there I know but it is soley the only way to avoid those flavour enhancers in food in the US) you shouldn´t have had still acid reflux.

Hi from Vienna to Hamburg, i guess your stomach had a little culture shock when visiting Los Angeles, he is not used to get these portions anyone. I like your pronunciation of München, it would be nice to hear that on a train station or airport in München as a welcome. I heard that the Americans love the English accent, is that true? I take my shoes always off if I'm inside of my or someone else house. I guess a "Moin" would just do it. Living in Hamburg, have the self-confidence to do what ever you want and wear what ever you like. The same in Berlin, nobody cares, go to the Alexanderplatz or Zoologischer Garten in Berlin for example and tell if anyone cares what you are wearing in that moment?

Offering a homeless person to buy food for him is literally saying: "I won't give you any money because I assume you'll just spend it on booze and drugs." If that assumption is false, you have just insulted him. If it is in fact true, then he is possibly suffering from a severe addiction and expecting or experiencing the next bodily withdrawel symptoms, therefore he might be in a state in which he doesn't give a shit about his next meal, but desperately needs money for booze. People who are living on the streets usually don't keep spending money for alcohol because they love drinking so much, but because they are addicted and can't quit without a guided therapy. He might know a charity place where he can get a free meal, but not booze.

The work live balance in germany is much better than in the US, so subdays eventhing closed is healthy and good for you and your friends, family.

@@HiFromHamburg I know that some precincts in Germany had trouble with their water supply after the flooding, but Hamburg area wasn't involved. If your tap water keeps on smelling and tasting bad, have a talk with your landlord, who, in turn, will have a talk with authorities. Sometimes there can be a breach in a supply line due to construction works that goes unnoticed unless you report it.

If you are organized and keep your shit together, yes. But if you lost the grip on your life, you can become homeless easily. Maybe you should give this advise of the inhabitants of Ahrweiler? You could as well say: No one needs to mourn the tragic loss of wife and child in an accident. They choose to.
