There are special "speaking like a native" - pronunciation lessons in each language. Nativ speaker emphasize words differently, shorten words or swallow syllables in spoken language. In the formal farewell formula on the phone, the emphasis is initially on: "Auf!" This is followed by "Wiederhören", but not every syllable is spoken. When you spoke your voice got higher at the end with " ..hören". That's in german a question. In cursive something like "Auf Wiederhören (?) " On the phone, however, saying goodbye is a statement (!) And the voice drops slightly at the end. The first syllable "Wieder..." is quickly spoken and contracted. In cursive something like "Wi d d e " - hören In addition, the vowel "e" is swallowed in the second syllable, i.e. not pronounced. Written something like "Wieder h ö_r n". The second syllable is spoken more slowly than the first syllable. The word "Auf (!)" - emphasize (pitch: in the middle) + first syllable briefly and contract "Wi d d e" .. (short pause) With the second syllable "h ö_r n" swallow the "e" and speak more slowly and emphatically and at the end lower your voice slightly (!). Auf - Wi d d e/h ö_r n (!)

My tipps for Hamburg, as now living here for a little over 25 years, coming from further up north the north sea shore: for the "dark history" of Hamburg there is Hamburg Dungeon... there are quite a few nice facts and it is enterntaining =) another pro about that location, the miniature wonderland is next door, which is a must see, but not much history only really really nice to see. for seeing big ships, Kapitän Prüsse Harbour tours... those skippers are nuts =) if you want to know about some natural desasters we had here, drive up to Husum and visit the Nissen Haus. They have some exeptional exhibitions about floods... My family, from my fathers side were just fleeing their home, when a big wave took it back into the ocean... they were only a few hundred meters away. That event is in the museum as well. I think still with a model what it did look like. phew what else. Driving up to Haithabu to see the history when northern germany was in danish hands... Greetings aus Barmbek =)

You might find Willkomm Höft interesting. Located in the Schulauer Fährhaus near Wedel. There every (major) ship that enters or leaves the harbour will get a greeting in their native language and its national anthem is played. The announcer operating the place then explains to the guest of the restaurant some major facts about the ship. A tradion for nearly seventy years. I used to visit that place regularly with my parents when I was kid. A nice place to include in a walk along the Elbe.

Whenever you have to pronounce an "Ö" just think of "Jerk". It´s somewhat close ..

Just make your Southern Germany Kartoffelsalat yourself: Add Gemüsebrühe (urm, vegetabel soup, instant stuff), salt, pepper, some onions if you like and let the potatoes soak a bit of the soup. After that add a neutral oil (after adding oil the potatoes won't soak the soup any more) and enjoy. Bavarians love to add Schnittlauch and Speck (Bacon). Ö ist just pronounced as the u in curl or a bit like in hurry. Maybe keep that in mind when saying "Auf wiederhören"

You should visit Burg Hohenzollern, for learning about Kings and Imperators, it's also a quit impressive castle with a beautiful view.

Hi Lila, if you are afraid of driving your bike in the city, try a trip to the "Wilstermarsch" north of Hamburg. We have nearly almost a bike lane beside the roads and less traffic. It´s nice to drive your bike at the riverside of the Elbe and watch the big ships on their way to Hamburg. The difference between Verrat and Fahrrad is to stress the second syllable in verRAT and the first one in FAHRrad.

Actually, Hamburg has less extreme weather due to the ocean nearby. If you want it more extreme (colder winters, hotter winters), try South or South East Germany. :)

Hi, in your last video you talked about wanting to see big ships. I'm from Hamburg but haven't lived in the city for 15 years now, but we had a unique place to watch ships. It is a little difficult to get there though and so extremely few people know about this place. It's across from the "Strandperle" (your friend should know it) and offers a great view over the Waltershofer harbor and what's going on there. Best you go there in the evening and watch the sunset there with a picnic. With the lights of the port there is a 100% Hamburg evening atmosphere. It is located at the end of the "Tankweg" at the small lighthouse. Previously, the Tankweg was closed to private vehicles and you had to sneak from the pier "Am Bubendey-Ufer" partly below partly on the floodwall there, but as far as I know, the road "Am Tankhafen" is now open to the general public and you come from there directly to the place. I hope you have a nice evening there!

The "Museum für hamburgische Geschichte" near Planten un Blomen und Micheal shows a lot. Nice Ship Models, a lot of the Hanse, the developement of the City, older northen Trachten ( nothern Dirndel ) and furnitured Rooms. Near Kiel is a whole Village build of original Houses. I (a German) have been living in the SF Bay area for 7 years now. The strongest earthquake that I have ever felt was in Germany (NRW). So far every earthquake that we have had in CA was so minor that I didn't know if it was a car driving past or an earthquake. Knock on wood that it stays like that.

Also living in Hamburg I recommend u guys to visit "Strand Pauli" which is a nice beach club and u may wanna rent a small boat ("Kanu") and cruise through all the small rivers of Hamburg. did u know that HH has more bridges than Venice? u sure wanna do this boat trip - but not just on the Alster. that's boring. and did ur boyfriend told u bout the "Mini Wunderland"? not sure if the name is right. it's like the world's biggest "small train park" (dunno the name in engl, lol). my bro helped building it in the beginning.....

Verrat vs. Fahrrad is a big difference, actually, because with Verrat, the stress is on the second syllable, while with Fahrrad, it's on the first. Ver- is one of those inseparable prefixes that are unstressed despite the general rule of stressing the first syllable. Regarding history and the port, look into the Hanseatic League, "die Hanse" in German, that's a very interesting bit of history right there. It's also where the first H of HH comes from. 😁

Nice video. I don't know if you are still interested in German history, but there is a documentation series on Netflix called "Die Deutschen". I think they have 2 seasons with 10 episodes each, starting from ~800 till 1st world war. It is in German only, but quite interesting.

As you are not all that keen on Kartoffelsalat, this makes me wonder whether have you tried Labskaus yet ? If you want to avoid saying "auf Wiederhören", you may try switching to Swiss dialect by saying "Uf Wiederluege". Your co-Hamburgers will be left in awe.

J.e.s.u.s., coming from Oldenburg this is so embarassing for me to imagine there is an American exchange student and the guys on campus or in clubs like Amadeus or Metro would actually not manage to talk to her... I guess I would have been one of them back in the day. So thank God there are Apps and Facebook groups today. But again, Northern Germany is really a little stiffer than the South. It's more like Sweden. Once you get to know somebody, it's great. So having lived in Berlin for 15 years, my closest friends are STILL the ones from Oldenburg when I was 19, and I keep coming back home like 4 times a year, and actually might move back, just because I never found such close friends again like my old Oldenburg friends. But again, a year is a short time, and I feel for her here, - that reminds me of my time as an exchange student in Ireland, being really lonely for months, in a culture where just nobody feels the obligation to integrate a new foreign person, and you just have to start looking for friends yourself, because everybody is shy and reclusive. Very tough. And the English still could be better here, - German students refusing to talk English, - also a little embarassing imo.

I would look forward to starting a relationship there in German. In other words, if I were to meet a girl and start talking and conversing first in German, that’s the language where the relationship could start from and could be maintained from there in German. Of course, you have to have the necessary skills and confidence to do that in the first place. I’m not necessarily a fan of the Denglish, but when needed, it would be necessary. But if someone starts talking to me I will try to get the hell out of this situation as polite as possible. That would make me look cold and resevered. Hamburg actually is increasingly threatened (due to climate change) by storm tides. Around 60 years ago (1962) Hamburg suffered the biggest natural disaster in Germany's recent history with a storm tide which claimed more than 300 lifes. Most of them are lesser F1 or F2 tornadoes, but there every few years a F3 one will show up. This expected to change a lot for the worse due to climate change in the coming decades as well. The last F4 tornado was some 50 years ago, though. However, the situation is absolutely not comparable to America's mid-west. Yet.

If you date a german and ask him where he wanna put his Wiener in ... you might trigger a "Klappmesser". As a Berliner (who regularly gets lost in Hamburg and somehow always ends up at the same roundabout), I can recommend the harbour tour (if you haven't already done it). The ships don't get any bigger - but when you get so close to them, they are at least more impressive. In addition, Hamburg - like Berlin - has an Unterwelten e.V. They organise guided tours through lost tunnels and old bunkers ... but you have to dress warmly, so it's more for the cold days. Oh, and if you ever find a lonely, lost motorcyclist with Berlin licence plates at the Horner Kreisel ... make a date with him.

I doubt that there are many taxes deducted from your salary. You mix up taxes with the money you pay into the health insurance, unemployment insurance and contributions for your retirement. If you have low income very little is deduced for actual taxes. A tax is money that is taken from you and can be spend by the state for ANYTHING the government wants to. Taxes are just gone and spent on the military, public administration, industry subsidies and all sorts of things from which you cannot benefit directly. The money deducted from your salary is for the most part bound to a specific purpose that benefits you directly. These deductions are not taxes. If you watch videos by Americans who moved to Germany, you hear that quite often that they mix up taxes with contributions to an insurance. Conflating these two expenditures is rather bad, because it simplifies the political debate on taxes too much.
