Lancashire Witch The Basics

The story of Robert Stephenson's little-known "Lancashire Witch". The first locomotive ordered by the Liverpool & Manchester Railway, and also the first locomotive designed to burn coke, not coal. She was also the first Stephenson locomotive to have inclined, rather than vertical cylinders, the first to have direct drive to the wheels, and the first to be able to use steam expansively.

Wonderful. Thank you so much for this series Anthony. I have enjoyed them all so far, these early locos are so fascinating. The solutions that some of the Engineers come up with to solve problems that with hindsight and nearly 200 years of experience are wonderful in their naivety. We forget that they were just trying to find what was reliable and worked. Thank you for time and work.

Thank you, Douglas. All these designed were cutting-edge technology of their day, and as you say, sadly we seem to forget that, and the inventiveness of their designers.

Fantastic, this is such an interesting period of railway history, that needs more exposure. You would think from the media that George Stephenson invented steam engines, and I am sick and tired of hearing about ‘Rocket’

I think the simplest explanation about what happened to Pride of Newcastle is the same as happened to Stourbridge Lion. When they couldn't find a buyer for the locomotives, they sold the pieces off to whoever had a use for them. Probably ended up used as a stationary boiler. I've heard of the coffin shaped box, but I think that if the Pride of Newcastle had exploded while Jervis was still employed by the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company, he probably would have recorded it. Like a lot of people of his time, Jervis wrote down much of the activity in his life.

The London, Midland & Scottish (LMS) paid special tribute to the Lancashire Witch in its centennial year with a Royal Scot Class locomotive, #6125, named in her honor and carrying an engraved brass plaque that depicted the original. The nameplate and the plaque were both removed in July 1935, and she was renamed "3rd Carabinier" the following year.

Nah that would be the fella making essentially programmable looms for weaving. Good bit of the reason behind even needing better railways is the cotton industry taking off and needing to ship more product out and more raw material in.

are you going to make a episode about Timothy Hackweath and his locomotive Sans Paril which was built originally to take part in the rainhill trails in 1829?

While I am not a D&H historian, knowing that the D&H used cable engines to move their coal wagons around, I would guess that all four engines ended up like Stourbridge Lion, converted to stationary engines for the inclined planes.
