Seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong discusses issues surrounding the use of performance-enhancing drugs in professional sports.
-----
Bob Schieffer interviews Lance Armstrong at the 2007 Aspen Ideas Festival.
Some of the most inspired and provocative thinkers, writers, artists, business people, teachers and other leaders drawn from myriad fields and from across the country and around the world all gathered in a single place - to teach, speak, lead, question, and answer at the 2007 Aspen Ideas Festival. Throughout the week, they all interacted with an audience of thoughtful people who stepped back from their day-to-day routines to delve deeply into a world of ideas, thought, and discussion.
Lance Armstrong is a retired American professional road racing cyclist. He won the Tour de France - cycling's most prestigious race - seven consecutive times, from 1999 to 2005. In doing so, he beat the previous records of five wins by Miguel Indurain (consecutive) and Bernard Hinault, Eddy Merckx and Jacques Anquetil. Previous to this achievement he also survived testicular cancer, a germ cell tumor that metastasized to his brain and lungs in 1996. His cancer treatments included brain and testicular surgery, and extensive chemotherapy.
Armstrong's athletic success and dramatic recovery from cancer inspired him to commemorate his accomplishments, with Nike, through the Lance Armstrong Foundation, a charity founded in 1997. The foundation's yellow rubber "Livestrong" wristbands, first launched in 2004, have been a major success, netting the foundation more than $60 million dollars in the fight against cancer, while helping Armstrong become a major player in the nonprofit sector.
These achievements have at times been clouded by allegations that Armstrong used performance enhancing drugs to achieve some of his wins. However, no conclusive evidence has been presented to verify these allegations, which he vigorously denies, and Armstrong has never failed a doping test.
Bob Lloyd Schieffer is an American journalist who has been with CBS News since 1969, serving 23 years as anchor on the Saturday edition of CBS Evening News from 1973-1996; chief Washington correspondent since 1982, moderator of the Sunday public affairs show Face the Nation since 1991, and, between March of 2005 and August 31, 2006, interim weekday anchor of the CBS Evening News. Katie Couric, formerly of NBC's The Today Show, succeeded Schieffer as anchor on September 5, 2006.

I absolutely love Lance. He was my inspiration for years. After doing loads of research for myself I am now sadly of the mindset that he uses Performance enhancing drugs. There is too much evidence against him. The fact is, he couldnt win without drugs - nobody can win the tour de france without drugs. That is not to say that there are riders in the tour who aren't clean. But you cannot tell me Lance can ride at an average of 41kms/hour for 3 weeks solid without a few jabs of EPO.

You are sooo right! It doesn't matter. The speculation will always be there. The great performances will always be there. Beleive what you want. I know nothing of Lance Armstrong except what I see in the media...same as most of his critics. I was never in the lab with him, I never saw any test results, and I have never had to stare death in the face. Lance Armstrong was a blast to watch for 15 years! Anyone in the States remember watching TdF coverage at 2:00 am?

I was in hospital after a friend died in competition. You think seriously about life in a hospital bed, and I came back with an incredible motivation that saw me shoot up the world rankings, until I retired with a back injury. I never took drugs. I was never offered drugs as a UK ski racer. I trained so hard that I had better performance than our Olympic medal winning rowers. I completely believe Lance did not take drugs. And I hate drug cheats with a fervour.

Lance Armstrong loves cycling and trains hard for it. If you love something so much that you devote so much time to perfecting it, you're going to be great at it, no matter what it is. I'm not sure why so many people hate on Lance Armstrong, maybe it's because he's done greater things in his life than they've ever thought about. I say Lance has never doped, he's just a damn good cyclist. Love you Lance

He also focused more on the tour than anyone in history. - Every other race was prep for Tour - Recon on key stages - Knew every technical detail about every stage - Built a team whose soul purpose was for him to win the Tour. Ferrari is a cycling genius. The man knows training and the anylitical side of climbing and TT. I am sure he knows doping inside out. That doesn't make Lance guilty. Do the research on their relationship. Not enough room here.

I'm a huge Lance fan and I have had my doubts too, But I don't believe Lance has used banned substances. He's just the best. He was the world short course triathlon champion at 15. His sole focus in cycling was winning the tour de france. He was the best prepared, most focused and best funded athlete, surrounded by an incredible team. He was a top cyclist before cancer and the weight loss afterward increased his power by 10% . Races are won by fractions of a percent.

For those, like myself, who have followed Lance's career closely, know that he doesn't care if he wins or even comes close to winning "other" races. He concerns himself primarily with the Tour de France. Due to his age, I don't know if he will win. But, there's no doubt in my mind that he will prepare for the race harder than any of his competitors and he will put up a very respectable showing. My prediction?? He'll at least be on the podium.

Victor Conte is laughing,"Testing is a joke." Eight years ago, Walter Yesalis and UCLA labratory chief Don Catlin were asked independently how much money it would take for research to really fight doping, and both said the figure would be in excess of $50 million.The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency spends roughly $2 million a year on research.Because professional sports have never paid, testers are too far behind in the fight to catch cheaters who use EPO,insulin,insulin-like growth factor and hGh...

It would be interesting to know where you get your statistics and figures from. He was a world champion at 21 and last time I checked the Fleche Wallone is a one day classic. I suppose you would say he was doping back then in 93. My question to you is why if everyone is doping was Lance still so superior to everyone in the Tour De France.

You need to understand the tour. The French hated Lance. They would have done anything to disqualify him. Eddy Merckx was punched in the kidney in the 1975 tour and he never won again. They did not physically attack Lance, but the hatred was similar. Perhaps worse!

@sickwidit951 The parts in his autobiography I was mentioning are just based by race results anyone can check. That he defeated pro athletes as a kid is a fact. The first race after a long absence was hard so off course he wasn't directly in the same league. You imply yourself that the league Armstrong was referring to was doped, turning his words into some sort of a guilt confession, which is not right. Training 7 hours a day for one race while Ullrich and co were enjoying holiday might explain
@1stPlaceDirector
@1stPlaceDirector 15 жыл бұрын
Look how much improvement the later cyclists have achieved. Even Eddy Merckx's hour record, set in Mexico at elevation was closely approached by female athletes (Jeannie Longo of France & Van Moorsel). Merckx rode 49km and the women rode 45 and 46km, respectively. That's not too far off.

@JRoca79 The effects of doping are exaggerated, it sure helps, but you are not riding twice as hard. And Lance Armstrong always had a abnormal strong body. You should read the autobiography where you see how he defeated pro athletes when he was still a kid, when he never even heard about doping. That abnormal strong body combined with the disease that he not only overcome but also shaped his body making it more suited for big races, combined with no positive tests makes me believe he is clean.

@4FalconAF All valid points. My point is, we shouldn't deify Lance; he's a hell of a competitor and an outstanding humanitarian but as a racer he's just as dirty as everyone else who races at that level. Back when I was racing juniors, a few of my friends were beating professionals every weekend, hell I even beat quite a few pros in my first pro/1/2/3 race. Lance is not the freak of nature that him and Chris C. want everyone to believe he is.

@4FalconAF One has to wonder how seriously we should take his autobiography. But while we're on the topic remember how he describes finishing dead last in his first European professional race (San Sebastian)? He mentions that the competitors in Europe were simply in another league. I think that probably had a lot to do with the cortico-steroids that were rampant on the European scene at that time. What do you think lance did to get himself up to their level?

apparently lance's doping was extra good that he is so confident. i don't buy this shit that they're completely doping free and win stuff 5-10 times in a raw. come on guys, there are relatively very similar top professional sportsmen, and usually the guys from rich nations come up first systematically. better preparations? maybe. doping?-most probably

So, he beat all those who either admitted to, or we found to be guilty of using prep.He planned his year around three weeks in July, as did all those rivals who prepped, and he still cracked them... And to be honest and realistic, no one will ever know now, the trails gone cold, papers and incriminating evidence swept under the carpet, leaving only hearsay and grumbles from ex team mates and the cynics.However, he will never convince me he was clean, he can say all he wants.....
