Wow! Long Video. Thanks for checking it out!
If curious about my opinion on the price, I am in alignment with James Hoffmann in his video on this grinder. I wish it were cheaper but understand considering their small size that they likely don't get incredible bulk pricing. Not for everyone.
Let me know any questions you have!

Thanks for this review mate. I’ve had my Onyx EG1 for about 18 months. I have Ultra Burrs installed permanently and use it exclusively for filter. It’s just so good and agreed with everything you’ve mentioned. Mine has stalled twice in that time, I tend to just dump the beans and no feed unless I have the day off and have time to play. I would say the stalling in a no issues for me, I’ve had the same happen with other grinders as well

Wow those burrs are thick! Wonderful review, deserved for such an expensive piece of technology. I started my coffee journey back in August by purchasing the Timemore C2 for FP, then I bought Hario Switch and recently Aeropress. Recently I got the upgrade bug so I watched and read so many reviews of better grinders and splurged on the 1Zpresso K-Max, mostly because of your huge breakdowns. The coffee it makes is much less bitter and the drawdown is surprisingly faster on the V60. Thank you for the in-depth reviews!

Thanks so much for the amazing review Lance(love you back)! I would be super interested in two comparisons, the first being between the EG1 and the P100, I'd be curious to see how the 98mm burrs compare in your eyes to the 80mm. Second, when you get around to doing the Unifilter review, it would be really cool to see how it compares to a unibasket, like the one's offered from Weber and Wafo. Thanks again Lance!

Great review. The part where you say "someone will probably comment below the name of this plug", without looking it up but just as someone that worked in an AV rental/production shop where the staff commonly called parts by their technical name we always referred to them as IEC plugs. Outside of that environment in our industry they are colloquially called D plugs/cables. (I'm sure IEC is a naming convention and there are actually other modifiers with numbers and letters for specific variations)

Dude thank you for how much effort and thought you put into this and all your work, it def doesn’t go unnoticed. As for the next high end grinder I buy, it must have the anti static tech that the ode gen 2 has, that changed the game imo. The ode does a fantastic job of eliminating static and I can only assume that many will follow suit in the following year or so. Also I love you too lance
@0whitestone
@0whitestone Жыл бұрын
I agree on both points, Lance's dedication is awesome. The effort just to source, swap and experiment with all of those burr sets makes me exhausted lol And that Ode Gen 2 (I have one and it's really great!) is a game changer IMO. I don't RDT at all with it and have no issues with static or retention and it's using a old technology that been in hair dryers for awhile. I'm sure there's some design or engineering challenges, but one that I think would totally be worth it to fit on as future updates to other grinders, or put into new ones, or course.
@LanceHedrick

This thing is a work of art. I would think the experience of using it would be quite rewarding. It seems a bit large in that, at 18 inches in height, it would not fit on many people’s countertops that have cabinets overhead. I wish they made a slightly smaller version; still, wow, this is so nice. By the way, if you play this video at 1.5 playback speed it does mimic if you had been drinking all this coffee…

The quality and production value of your videos has increased tremendously and it's so great to see. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and research! I would just like to ask one thing - I recently purchased an EG1 V3 and indeed I have to let the burrs "touch" to grind fine enough for espresso. The noise is killing me though, and I wonder if there is any way except for "feeling the pull" which I can't feel to know when the burrs are touching too much? My grounds are getting a bit warm when they come out, I'm afraid it's due to the friction of the burrs hitting eachother... Cheers.

The E37Z and hero variant are made to order. I had one. They are gorgeous machines. However , since I’ve owned both and used both the EG-1 is the better grinder in my opinion. Easier to clean, less retention (both are minimal ) but for pour over and espresso the EG1 is better.

To my knowledge, the most expensive single-dose grinder is the original Titus grinder with DRM hybrid burrs (68+68mm conical+flat) with a price tag of approx €6500.

The Ceado e37z Hero single dose is also more expensive than the EG1 with its $5900 price tag.

Actually the base Version of this grinder is now at 7000 € afaik. Without customization, shipping and tax. It can easily exceed 10k€ delivered to your door with some customization.

I just got my EG-1 last week. OMG, it's amazing ! I'm just seasoning the burrs now. Dark roast 20 kg - 25kg should do it !

Thanks for your guidance. Is the EG1 the only grinder that allows easy access to and quick swapping of the blind burrs? I get the impression the focus on magnets instead of screws to fasten everything makes this especially appealing for those who like to swap between filter coffee and espresso on a regular basis.

Love you too! Amazing video, Lance. How would you pit it against the larger burrs, like EK43S with stock burrs or a P100?
@LanceHedrick
@LanceHedrick Жыл бұрын
I prefer this with ULF over any grinder with any burrset currently. But, of course, I haven't used a p100 nearly enough with 98mm HU SSP burrs to confidently say there isn't a chance those could beat this out. What I can say is I can't imagine a quality difference big enough to have me prefer the aesthetic of the p100 over this. I adore the aesthetics here.

That lab sweet burrs + EG-1 combo, man! As soon as I become a millionaire, it's going to be my first feat to snatch one of those!😂 Seriously, awesome, awesome, perfect video, as always! A jewel to watch

I got the ditting lab sweet for poir over and I’m thinking about getting the EG-1 for espresso. Don’t love the weak motor and reports of beans sometimes getting stuck though. Also lack of an anti static mechanism. Don’t know what to get.

Great video Lance! Thanks for your content! Could it be that why you prefer the ULFs over the SSP high uniformity, could come from more even Patrick’s distribution because it has no screw holes? 17:33

As usual love your review. Actually there is a more expensive grinder out there... the Ceado E37Z hero, which I happen to own. If somehow you can get your hands on one. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! do a review and a comparison with the weber. I feel theres still an edge to the Ceado due to the very specific burr set it has but I'm not a professional as you

I am supprised that you mentioned we have a lots of burrs options for 80mm, before this video I would only think of ditting and SSP. I have been using the CORE burrs for both filter and espresso, and switch to ULF for filter only after I have got my P64 with SSP MP burrs. TBH I might be wrong but the P64 gives better espresso at the lighter side than the CORE, also more clarity in filter. At the very beginning of using the ULF, I was grinding way too fine since it did not provide the resistant as the other burr/ginder to extent the total brew time. Now I am getting better with the ULF and love using them, it unlocks some flavor that I cannot get from EKs. Now I am using the EG-1 with ULF only for filter, it would be a waste for a grinder at this price point cannot make good light roasted espresso. I would love to hear from you or the others, what would be the experience of using the ULF or ditting burrs for espresso.
@LanceHedrick
@LanceHedrick Жыл бұрын
Yes. 64mm MP gives loads more clarity than core. I don't believe I said something to contradict that. And comparing core to MP on espresso is an improper comparison. Core isn't meant to be a unimodal style burr like MP. Core doesn't have the goal of clarity. So im not sure I understand your concern. Seems youre looking for something that isn't there with Core. A better comparison would be ULF to MP. ULF is much higher clarity. If you want something that is more like MP but a bit more body on EG1, I'd recommend the SSP LU

Great video as always! You mentioned that it’s difficult to move a stepless grinder by less than 5 microns at a time. If you tried any of Jkim Makes vernier scale mods? You’re supposed to be able to move by 1 micron at a time.
