This has been a massive endeavour for our first ground up build. Many times we doubted ourselves and our skills. Through many trials and failures we persevered and built the world's first Land Cruiser Chinook. Thanks to the unbelievable support of our friends and community this rig has come to life. Check out the full build series playlist to see how it all began.

I'm gonna be honest. I usually can't stand most (90% or so) of 4wd and even car content on youtube and the like as it's normally super over the top with insanely expensive builds. But you two and any friends you have on are mega chill down to earth and also super relatable as it's just grass roots style builds and it's just super fun you watch you guys A massive congratulations on this new adventure you have and keen to see how you go on your pan American trip!!!

Be sure to break them in first. Before you put them to use. The snap ring is getting in the way of the hub gear. So it won't seat. That's why you're not supposed to pack grease in the hub gears.

Doing your own gears isn’t so bad I rushed 5.29 and locker’s with KZfaq academy some google foo and a couple of rented tools from the parts store . never had a issue just bought good gear sets and master install kits. solid pinion spacers instead of crush sleeves. I went high quality and shopped as good a deal as I could find would have loved some help from someone that knew what they were doing but the internet will provide. All that being said I’d not have been game to test my newly acquired knowledge in the middle of a road trip. give it a shot on the next rig

Hi, exciting project. I am curious about the 35 chubby inch tires; it seems that you have done your research, yet I haven't seen many tires that big for people doing extended trips on the "Panamericana". On the southern leg, for the past 3 years, most LCs i've seen run skinny 33's or similar. For fuel efficiency and ease on the train. I can see that you are going through extensive mechanical modifications to insure durability, so I am sure that there is a rationale behind it and would love to hear it.
@jeremybentham7447
@jeremybentham7447 Жыл бұрын
For the 30K miles, going from 12mpg to 20mpg could be close to 1000 gallons of petrol/gas. With your camper aerodynamic load, weight and and larger tires, your 3.4 5zv-fe is probably overworked and not at it's most efficient. Since what you need is an engine that does not increase much MPG with high torque load, and you need to push that rig over high altitude mountain pases, I would look at the 2UZ-FE. With skinny 33's, and serious tunning, you should get close to 17-18 mpg.
@ToyotaWorldRunners
@ToyotaWorldRunners Жыл бұрын
Hey Jeremy! The 35s definitely suit the chassis well in our opinion. While smaller skinnier tires may be more fuel efficient, we didn’t build it for fuel economy. With our 42 gallon tank we can travel ~500 miles before refuelling. Agreed that 35” mud terrains may not be the most “practical” they definitely suit our style and will be durable. As for power to weight the 3.4 is going great! Especially now with the 4.88s. I seem to always be reminding people that motorhome much bigger and heavier than this with 4wd ran (and still run) the 22r and 22re.

@@ToyotaWorldRunners Thank you so much! Definitively a winner in the "looks" department, and the extra contact patch will compensate well for the extra weight. It you are set on the v6, pay extra attention to oil quality in Central and South America. Bring extra quality head gaskets; good ones can be hard to find. I have noticed that the 2.7 22RE, 4500 I6 32v and the 4.7 2UZ V8 engines seem to hold the best here. Replacements/swaps on the 3 & 5VZ (LC Prado; OH/blown head gaskets) seem to be more common here than in NA. Some locally available oils gunk up at

Looked like you hadn't even bothered to change your diff lube before you left, probably didn't even check the levels, pretty much a disrespect to turn up like that to any workshop, those guys at nitro look to do an awesome job, very clean shop, use of DTI, quality complete kits, nice to see workshop looking so good, 4.8 is always a good ratio choice, over here in New Zealand, our diesel engines and 33s to 35s, 4.8 is the perfect ratio, love watching this build so far, I do think some of your steering issues maybe from the huge amount of overhang behind your rear axle. All the best guys, good to see a happy couple enjoying life and the outdoors, look forward to the rest of the adventure!!!

Yep..lots of tools and know-how. Press, dial indicator to check backlash and if necessary adjusting pinion depth to set backlash, setting carrier bearing preload, and finally choosing between a crush or solid sleeve. Not to mention you must have meticulous attention to detail. Oh, and don't forget there's a locker to install too. I feel ya, takes hours to do it and the first time is daunting. I think the first time I ever built a 3rd, I just threw everything together and got lucky. Now I'm a bit better at it 😝 Huge huge huge congrats on the sponsor and stoked on the build! Looking great!

It had to be a bit of a shock to see all of those guys with their hand on your rig after all of the work you had done to it. On the other hand, they were obviously knowledgeable and skilled, so knowing she was in good hands must have been comforting. The 1st gen Tacoma I had needed to manual hubs rebuilt after some knuckle head had screwed them up and now I just finished up on replacing both actuators on my 2002 Sequoia, so I was right there with you on parts of this. I just love what you kids are doing. I’m 46, I drive a 2001 4WD 4Runner and I absolutely love it. I have friends that don’t understand why I don’t get a new car, they view vehicles as a means to get from point A to point B, not as something to be enjoyed. My 4Runner is built just enough for a daily driver. My husband is my mechanic, he has done every repair it has needed so far, he even recently did a 3rd member swap after I “accidentally“ jumped it and broke off 2 gear teeth in the 3rd member, he’s amazing!! He is my sponsor 😂. But, to be doing what you’re doing at your age and enjoying it and having the mechanical knowledge that you have is very commendable and I’m happy for you both for getting the added sponsor support. Your videos are entertaining and knowledgeable with zero false pretense and I really enjoy watching. I hope you guys make it to Argentina and have the trip of a lifetime. Happy Trails! 😊❤

In Europe most J8 are 4,2 TD Diesel 1HD-T best most reliabel Diesel engine Toyota ever build i think.Drivetrain was permanent 4x4 with center diff both axrls have elecctric pneumatic lockers. In Europe you cant get a J8 never under 10.000 Bucks used ,because there so popular by Land Cruiser and Overlander Fans. The problem of RCV if the CV doesent break at overload the next maybe more complicated or expensive part you dont carry as a spare break.I hope you carry spare propellershaft joints on your journey.

This chassis is an American fzj80, so would have had the 4.5L petrol engine. The diesel would have been amazing, but likely wouldn't fit easily into the Chinook engine bay. We don't have the j8 trans or t case, so no centre lock, but have the e-locking diffs. The weak point in the front end is the manual hub, which we have spares of, and yes, spare U-joints!

@@keltonderkach9601 the chinook came factory with a 22r in an era where the max speed limit was 55 and it was barely adequate for highway travel back then. transmission is an R150 and it doesn't have different gearing. the 5vz has the rpm range to run 5.13s on 35s at highway speeds, 75mph at 3100 rpm vs 2950 with 4.88
@ToyotaWorldRunners
@ToyotaWorldRunners Жыл бұрын
In our case (and a lot of others) the 35s measure closer to 34, or 33.5 when mounted. We chill around 65-70mph on the highway, ~2600-2800 rpm. 5.29s would have been perhaps a better choice to stay in the peak of the power curve, however.. we’ve broken too many 5.29 gear sets to do that for the Pan Am. A good set up guy makes a huge difference in them blowing up or not. Lots of preload on the side adjusters is a must or the ring gear will walk away under heavy load and bye bye teeth.
