That is one heck of a spring on the starter drive.I love the way the whole seat tub just unbolts and comes out. Makes it a lot easier to work on the clutch and transmission

+odc43054 Nothing on an old Landy is light! Getting the seat box out wasn't too bad, but it's typical British engineering - dozens of tiny rusted bolts that are much longer than they need to be... Phill.

To be honest, I have decided not to do the engine display on Monday - I spent over 11 hours building the gearbox today and realistically I'm not going to get it all back together in a day. Not properly anyway! A bit further out, but next Saturday we are displaying some engines at Brede pumping station. Free to get in and well worth a look. Phill.

Hard graft, but it's worth the mud sweat and beers.... get someone to help you put it back in, you'l find aligning the input shaft a whole lot easier. Have fun!

Fill the spigot with grease then whack a perfect fit bolt/rod etc into it, hydraulic force pushes it out...

Hi - why boil the spigot bearing in oil before fitting ? And do you let it cool down before fitting ?

Question for you mate. I have used my input shaft to line up the clutch friction plate and clutch cover assembly, as you have done in this video. When I tighten up the cover bolts slowly in sequence, I am able to insert and remove the shaft with a pleasant 'popping' suction sound as the bronze bush is new and the fitting is nice and snug. BUT, when I fully torque up the cover bolts to 25ft/lb the shaft will go in but I can only remove it by tapping it out with a rubber mallet. Why so tight? Will try later with some moly grease and see if it is easier, but worry that if it is this tight it may bind when assembled.

I suppose as the bolts are tightened the friction plate is better sandwiched between the flywheel and cover. It should sort itself out when operated. Contrary to what many say, Land Rover did recommend a sparingly applied smear of molly grease on the input shaft splines to help things along.

Done. Took the cover and friction plate off, rotated the cover and aligned different holes to the little positioning pins (even though the cover is the same wherever you put it) and it worked. Input shaft slides in and out snugly. Feels perfect.

The clutch is quite different on most 2a's, both the friction plate and pressure plate as well as the operating mechanism - but the principle in fitting the friction plate,pressure plate and spigot bush is the same.
