The cam timing is fine, however... at some time the distributor drive dog had been reversed, this putting the rotor 180 out. I only discovered this on trying to fit a replacement distributor a couple of years later. I pulled the old dizzy off and expected to just drop the new one in, but it wouldn't go.. The P/O had just fitted the leads to the rotor cap 180 out so to speak, so it worked.... Now all as it ought to be.

Just timed my cam and noticed that the key way in the cam sprocket sets the cam lobes so they are up - thus opening the valves. I figured that was timing the cam. Not on the firing stroke. Piston at top dead centre etc. So this accounts for your timing being wrong. Turn the crank until the cam is correctly placed - that would be another rotation of the crank. I’ll let you know the result.

Take a look at your video- your cam lobes can be seen in the valve open position. Correct for cam but not for ignition timing.

Yep that worked. Interesting your distributor dog being changed. That would certainly stuff it up.

Now don't quote me on this, but I believe late Series 3 engines have the same cam shaft, earlier diesel 2.25's had a different cam between diesel and petrol. It's a long time since I had to read about that.. The followers, cages and tappet blocks are the same.
