Since he was a boy, Diamond Aircraft test pilot Jarred has dreamed of flying to First Flight Airport... the place where the Wright Brothers first took to the skies in 1903.
Today we make that dream a reality. Join LifeStyle Aviation pilot Sharon and Jarred from Diamond Aircraft as we fly the NEW Diamond DA50 RG to First Flight. This fun trip is also an excellent chance to test the performance and capabilities of this aircraft, as we land on a short 3000' runway with the 300HP, Jet-A burning, FADEC-controlled Diamond DA50.
-------
The DA50 RG offers the ultimate in handling, stability and control, ease of operation as well as structural and system redundancies, all coupled with a high degree of crashworthiness. The sleek all carbon composite airframe incorporates advanced aerodynamics with the latest in passive safety technology for high performance, great efficiency and superior occupant protection.
The DA50 RG is powered by the 300 hp Continental Aerospace Technologies CD-300. The CD-300 is a geared, liquid-cooled, turbo-charged and jet-A1-fueled engine controlled by two redundant full FADEC. Pilot workload is lightened using a single lever power control that adjusts thrust and propeller RPM’s automatically. The extra benefits of operating a jet fuel powered aircraft are low emissions, low fuel consumption and global availability.
The 3 blade MT hydraulic variable pitch propeller features advanced blade geometry with state of the art aerodynamic airfoils for efficient performance, smoothness and low noise. The blades are built in natural composite design which leads to an exceptional vibration damping behavior and reduced weight.

Nice airplane but I laughed when you kept referring to 3000' as "short." Is landing performance really that bad compared to a DA40?

Very cool to see this finally happening. Years ago they had this in the works but it never came to fruition, and then they were going to roll out a weakened version called the Mustang. Big push back from anyone / everyone involved in the Diamond world, or the Diamond wanna-be world :) Bet it's super nice to fly - big step up from the 40. Give the 62 a run for its money. Love the girl - so confident. You have to watch real close to see her getting used to pitch and power settings, and fighting the trim a bit. Like her comms ... something I feel pretty good at but I could sure get a lot better at !

Wow, this is a really awesome video featuring a special airplane. ❤ Can't wait to become an owner very soon. 🎉 Sharon, you are an amazing pilot. Special thanks to Patrick for all the hard work that went into the video. The over voice and cinematography was amazing. 💯 Also, Jared. It's always a pleasure to witness his diamond skills. Once again, thanks lifestyle aviation for making the video. Feel free to make more whenever you can 😉.

The first witnessed flight actually took place near Hammondsport NY on July 4, 1908. Glenn Curtiss was awarded pilot license number 1 for the flight. The Wright brothers weren’t witnessed flying until September 1908, which is why they were awarded pilot licenses four and five.

Why does this plane have so little fuel capacity relative to the 62? I can’t help think that the lack of speed/range will cost this plane a lot of sales.

The practical reason is that the 62 carries its 36 extra gallons in the engine nacelles. Why Diamond didn’t find a way to add more fuel capacity in the wings is a question only they can answer.
@sloth6765

Because they're not compromising on safety... Fuel is in crash protected bladders between dual spars. Less space than if they put tanks in the hull.

My CFI's have beaten MORE RIGHT RUDDER into me and this is in 160-180 HP engines... I imagine with a 300 Horsepower Turbocharged engine you need at least 40% more right rudder, than you would in a Cessna 172 or a PA-28-181

Who was actually flying the aeroplane just before landing..? Appears both pilots were adding inputs simultaneously without a positive hand over of control. Very little synergy between them.

Extremely common after topping off fuel, this is the fuel vent to equalize pressure in the fuel tanks at all altitudes. Completely normal.

49 gallons fuel capacity is simply unacceptable for an airplane like this. 750nm MAX range. And that's not even realistic once you factor in a real payload and decent cruise speed.
@davidholubetz177

50 gallons is the standard (long range) tank size on the DA40, which has only a 180hp engine ... so I agree that is small for a 300hp monster like the DA50
