You also need to look at the cost, and it was a long way from even the bottom of the descent to the finish to hold off chasers. Both Roglic and Moviestar seemed more worried about gaining time on Ineos. Horner pointed out that Moviestar, w/ 2 in the break, could have taken turns attacking if they had the legs, with a chance to put time on Roglic, although this would have risked the group getting recaught by the Ineos pack. They went with the sure thing, which was to put time on Ineos, an alliance with Roglic and Kuss.

As I commented on the LRCP, Roglic is a swashbuckler in the truest sense. That means sometimes he is doing incredible things and salvaging victory (Basque Country Stage 6) or sometimes falling down while trying to swing from a chandelier (see any of the pictures of his torn shorts and bandages). He rides on instinct, he wants to win, and he is quoted as saying he doesn't know some things about bike racing and they tell him what to do. They probably DID tell him what to do, and they have been telling him so far this Vuelta, but Roglic decided to stop listening and strike out. I really don't think he wants to change, nor do I think the TJV can change him - we as fans get to go for the ride. Sometimes we're in awe, sometimes we're shaking our heads at something awful.

Counterpoint: He rode very conservatively in the 20' TdF and just followed wheels and relied on his punch for MTF stage time bonuses. They rode safely and figured that a minute lead over Pog was enough going into the Final TT was enough. They let Pog gain back a bunch of time on Peyresourde and didn't bother chasing.

@@LennieNelson55 And I think this was the catalyst as to him really swashbuckling. He didn't have the legs at the World Championships, but LBL 2020 he was right up there (and benefited from Alaphilippe's deviation + too early celebration), but it really bloomed last year in the Vuelta. 4 stage wins, a second in a sprint, and he needed all those bonus seconds.

Another series of bad takes in hindsight. It was a legit Roglič move for more reasons than one. Luckily the comment section is on better form atm and some are already mentioned. The “math“ is all over the place as well. Roglič had some 13s at the top and well over 20s at the moment he crashed. Mas was in trouble from the start of decent bc he is bad at it and Roglič knows it. Without a crash Roglič would take at least 30s on Mas which is more than first 9 stages combined. Nicholas Roach estimated 40s to a minute depending on coop btw Haig and Mov.. Roglič enjoyed his move and was exuberant at the finish despite the crash. Maybe podcasters can take a joy lesson..

his seated power is incredible primoz looks like a bugatti just flooring the accelerator so much core strength. Storer has really capitalized on bardets flattering comments about his engine by going on to win 4 stages(i think) now seems to be unique look forward to seeing him develop seems pretty malleable like someone who would make a great SD or leader maybe hes cagey. I really think roglic was restless with profile and his strengths I can see the temptation, still ill advised, but I loved every part except the crash and glad he looked ok its still a fall but didn't hit hard more slid out and didn't look like he lost much skin. Just hope rest and recovery isn't disrupted its actually a blessing he lost red today less press he can just focus on recovery and plan appropriately. Been great race.

I reckon they let the gap to the break grow to over 9 minutes with the intention of forcing the other GC teams to chase, thereby burning their men and opening the possibility of the attack. It was further incentivized by the preventive pace the Grenadiers were setting on the climb. I think the gap would have been bigger as he was putting time on the downhill thanks to Mas, and then López would have been the one doing most of the work

Personally don't think that it was such a bad move either, because, yes he probably wouldn't gain that much time to the favourites in general, but he certainly tested and cracked a good amount to those guys that didn't have the legs that day, like Bernal and Yates. For me it's always about testing your competitors when you have great legs even if there isn't a great chance of a time gain.

I don't know wether Bernal was drop or he waited for Yates....then again why Bernal would wait for Yates if he is up on GC...I'm confused ther because we could see Bernal looking back when he was still in gropu with Lopez,Mas,Haig and Kuss.

He killed off Ineos, who have depth. Only Movistar left. Haig was not expecting to be GC and probably will be underdone in 3rd week. Well done Storer though. Similar to O'Connor at Giro last year.

I'm new to road cycling. I'm interested in race mechanics. Why did the GC riders gave big time to the breakaway? Why roglic ain't worried losing the red to O.C. Eiking and G. Martin? Hope i could get answers.
@elbrayan3512
@elbrayan3512 2 жыл бұрын
Eiking and G. Martin are going to disappear in the next few stages. They aren't a real threat for the top 5 GC positions, that's why the strong teams ( Ineos, TJV, Movistar, TBV) didn't care and preferred to watch each other on the peloton, because there are the real contenders for the red jersey
@LennieNelson55
@LennieNelson55 2 жыл бұрын
Eiking and Martin will (likely) lose tons of time in the later more important mountains, so the GC group doesn't really mind not having the lead now. Also it's usually a big pressure on the GC leader to defend the jersey for a week or more. It taxes their team because they are the incumbent responsible for chasing down major attacks and controlling the breakaway gap on most stages.

the other answers are correct, the side bonus for visma is that suddenly teams who might want to be 5th or 3rd have another team to mark and chase, which suits them.

Here's my argument for Primoz attacking the climb (but STILL should have eased up on the downhill after the climb). The goal is NOT substantial gain on Mas and Lopez, which as you say is impossible. Yes. letting Eiking finish 10 or 12 minutes ahead is great, yes it's great to lose the red jersey and 2 minute GC lead. But allowing Eiking to extend the gap for maybe a six or seven minute or greater GC lead going forward would put added pressure on Jumbo for later stages. So if in this stage at the time Primoz did his attack, Inneos and Movistar were showing Jumbo, "we are not working, you Jumbo have to work alone the rest of the way to stop Eiking building unlimited gain, then with a little effort on the climb Primoz could make other GC contenders wake up and chase him, and break up the GC contender peleton, collect with the fewest survivors possible (in this case only Mas Lopez Haig) and use the rest of the stage with now motivated Mas and LOpez to distance and start the burial ceremony of Bernal/Yates and others) AND keep Eiking in comfortable distance. Attacking on the climb did work to drop Inneos, now Prfimoz just needed to play it safe on the downhill to consolidate with with Mas and Lopez to push the gap on the others the rest of the ride.

I'm thinking of TDF1990 when LeMond allowed the unknown Chiapuci a big GC lead because no other teams would help limit that breakaway and LeMond refused on principle to call his team to do all the work since the other GC contenders also had something to lose. Then it took until the last stage 20 (not counting ceremonial stage 21 on the Champs Ellysee) to close the GC gap, and if LeMond had had an off day in that stage 20 TT he could have blown the TDF.

So Roglic gave almos 40 seconds to Bernal and Yates, the 2 rivals that can come close to him in the TT. Why was it a bad move again?

Roglic's entire history has been voracious - winning everything that he possibly can and always pressing his advantage - at time to his own detriment. Is it possible that the team DS convinced him that he HAD to be more conservative in the first week to win and now that we are in the second week, he is back to his old ways - I feel stronger so I am going to go and crush my rivals period.

4:07 how is this 22 seconds? :) Jokes aside, he did win 30+ seconds on the Ineos boys, so it's a win isn't it? Yes, he didn't gain time on the guy by Movistar but he did gain time on the Ineos guys. I think the attack was good, it's much better than them just riding to the finish together and with no gaps and no entertainment.

The reason he crashed gets clear if we watch it a few times. He picked the wrong line and then thought he was on rim brakes and his hands used rim force BUT he was hydro dura ace and anyone who has ridden shimano hydro long enough can tell you the braking is inconsistent in the heat. Combine that with high speed, 10 days of racing fatigue, 25mm tubular at 120psi and a bit of southern Spain dusty roads and he is lucky that 8kg bankers S5 didnt brake in half along with his collar bone. Like Valverde if he was on rim he most likely would have saved it as the wheel would not have locked up so easy. These 'brake and slide' crashes are so common now. UCI needs to step in and ban hydro disc for road. Discs are ok for noobs who dont ride this fast and hard and who typically run fatter tires and lower pressures. Fun fact: DSM are using ex Team Sky cars left over from the 2014 Tour Of Romania. DB put them up cheap on fleabay.

I mean this is an absolute fine move if you hold it together on the descent only with Roglic having real problems there I also don't like it. Man he needs to get some serious training in there. I mean he could've crested the Mount Ventoux probably one a a half minutes before Pogacar maybe more on a great day on this years tour. But with descending like this you wont get much out of your climbing. You need to have this as at least not as weakness being a GC rider.

I think the attack made by Roglic was justified because racing isn’t predictable. Yes, with hindsight we can see it wasn’t a great move; more risk than reward. But a different scenario could have just as easily have developed if he didn’t crash - perhaps the chasing group of GC riders don’t work well together and the gap for Roglic actually increases. Or maybe he never attacks but there’s a crash anyway because someone touches wheels. Or maybe because Roglic attacked it prevented one of the other GC riders from attacking which perhaps could have cut into his lead. My point is that racing isn’t as predictable as, “if X doesn’t happen then Y would have.” Roglic read the race, made a move, and in this instance it didn’t work out but maybe next time it will.
