In this video I take you along as I start working on a large semi abstract landscape painting on canvas using acrylics.
The painting process takes a long time, slowly building up layers upon layers of expressive marks and acrylic paint. Painting outdoors allow me to experience the landscape and respond to those experiences on the canvas. Working like this poses both challenges and rewards and I'll share some of my thoughts and tips along the way.

Absolutely loved this video. Thank you for showing us how to paint large as this is a natural progression for some of us who have been practicing your smaller paintings for some time. Can you please keep filming this as you finish this painting at home, want to learn to be able to finish a large canvas in your style, I am currently attempting one.

This is awesome Marie :) I'm healing from another double knee surgery so I loved living vicariously through you out there....though there's no way my back or knees will ever let me paint like that!!😊 but I, like everyone else, absolutely loved seeing how you bagan your large project and I'm SO hoping you'll continue the video with more parts on your next steps! Keeps my brain working and inspired! I love that brush so much, the long one with a sort of bent brush head, but can't find anything like that in my hardware stores :/ I think my arthritic hands would love that bend to paint!! But ill keep looking! You're a master at layering and getting lovely textures, and like you said, even when some will get covered by more layers, it still always adds such life and movement throughout. You are always a joy to watch and listen to, so thank you for sharing...realized I'd been missing seeing you paint so much :) but I also hope you've been having a wonderful summer and taking care of yourself, because if we don't do that, we can't help others :) Sending much love your way!!!❤🥰💕

I'm so glad you enjoyed a look into the process. My summer did not turn out quite as I had hoped in so many ways... but such is life sometimes. In the grand scheme of things I am ok. You are always so positive and encouraging and I thank you for that
@jadetobin
@jadetobin 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheDanishPainter thank you so much Marie!! I'm so sorry your summer didn't end up as you'd hoped!! It's always so frustrating when life surprises you in all the wrong ways :/ it takes a minute, for me anyway, to wrap my head around whatever the new circumstances are, then I can move forward cuz, well, what else is there to do but move forward and find ways to make the new circumstances as good as can be. Not always easy though, I must admit :/ I'm not, by nature, a perky positive person, but, I've had to just figure out for myself a way to keep living and not let this body or things that have happened to me run me into the dark pit they want to push me down into...so, some days are better then others. Some days I allow myself to be blah and the rest I have to make myself move and find beauty and peace wherever I can because I've spent serious time in my own dark pit and so I work very hard at not allowing myself to go back. So...I try art and when I can't physically do it, I watch others do it and find inspiration there. Then of course I always love to cuddle up and snack and read or watch great movies on days I can't move ;) so...I'm definitely not one of those bubbly perky in the morning always happy people....but I force myself to find that peace and happiness i need to keep breathing :) I think most of us are like that :) Speaking of which...I'm going to make some yummy tea and get my knees in as comfortable a spot as possible and just breathe for a bit :) I can't wait to see what you do next with your painting. Not sure if its meant to be multiple parts or not with the one you started here...but either way, I always look forward to seeing when you have something new up!!! Thanks for that!!!🥰💕and I hope you can have a good rest of the summer...or fall...I love fall, so much cooler!! This weather of some days almost 100f with storms making the heat index well into the 100's is too much for me :) so, i look forward to cooler weather, hopefully soon :)

I am loving your style. And even though this is the first layer it has so much life already. I would love to see how you continue with the layering as I find this the hardest part. I just want to get something finished but I need to learn to slow down and understand what happens to a painting through its stages of layering. Thanks so much

Yes I know how you feel about having to slow down and wait - not easy at all! I often work on several paintings during a painting session because I feel it helps to "rotate" between them. Thanks for watching :)

Le paysage que vous nous présentez est très beau et paisible . L'ombre et la lumière posées par le feuillage des arbres au dessus donnent à la toile un magnifique effet , très inspirant pour aller un peu plus loin dans le travail . Hi Marie Louise - I enjoyed watching this! It looks like have you prepared your canvas with some sort of thick gesso - could you tell us what you use? Also, something I use sometimes that you might like to try: Whilst the (acrylic) paint is all still wet and with the canvas or paper flat, I sprinkle fine marble dust randomly on it. After it's completely dry I wash the painting with water (I sometimes also use a scrubbing brush on canvas!). The marble dust comes away leaving lighter areas which can look really organic. These lighter areas can either be left or glazed over (or entirely covered up with further layers). I'm too old to paint as you do in this video (my knees couldn't stand it!) but I have a pair of gardeners knee pads which allow me to kneel down to paint quite comfortably.
@TheDanishPainter

Hi Rhod. Yes I gave the canvas several layers of gesso before I started. This canvas is linen and has a very "rough" and mechanical weave/structure that I didn't like and I didn't want to show through in the finished painting so I gave it a few extra layers of gesso. That marble dust sounds magical - definitely something I'd love to try. Where might I get my hands on marble dust? Got go get some of those kneepads as well :)
