From 2001. Prior to bringing out a panel of Judy Garland's co-workers for a panel discussion on the entertainer, Larry King had a one on one interview with her daughter, Lorna Luft.

All Judy wanted was to be loved. Judy knew her kids loved her. Thank God, God let us hear Judy Garland sing.

I get chills and tear up every time I see this. Judy and Lorna's love for one another is so precious to view. I'm 60 yrs old and adored Judy all my life. Lorna is a beautiful, talented angel. Judy left a far greater legacy behind other than her brilliant talent. She gave the world some incredible children. Love and blessings to all 3 of them~.

I hate how Judy was treated. I hate that she didn’t have a proper mother and a proper childhood. She brought happiness to so many. It’s a tragedy that she didn’t find it for herself except in her children. She loved her children.

This brought tears to my eyes. Although Judy had emotional and medical probs, she was still a good mom. I can't say that about my own bio alcholic mother. Judy left behind such wonderfully talented chikdren That is the best legacy if all. But I am so thankful for all of Judy's movies and music for us to enjoy. Love you Judy.

Yes. I think because her own mom had been so bad she made it a point to be a better mom. The same came be said about Michael Jackson, as eccentric as he was, he kept his kids as sheltered as possible so they could have as much of a normal childhood as they could (something that like Judy, he was deprived of because he was forced to perform at such a young age).

WONDERFULLY TALENTED CHILDREN who all had their lifelong battles with addiction to multiple substances. Again, it doesn't accord with most people's idea of "good mom". That both her famous children swear she was a fantastic mother is understandable. They want to protect her reputation. And, perhaps more crucially, they don't want to be seen as the product of someone who was damaged and damaged themselves (even though they indisputably were). Giving Judy Garland a pass because she was talented (and well-intentioned, etc) is minimising and perpetuating the problem.

I'm so sorry you didn't have that in your mother. My mother, too, was an alcoholic. I was an adult (late teen) before I realized that she had a problem and was depressed. My point is, she was an amazing mother and hid it well. I thank her in the heavens every day for that. She desperately tried to shield her children from her problems and give us a wonderful childhood. And she succeeded. Judy seemed to try to do the same thing. But there's only so much you can do to mask childhood trauma. I just became a mother last year and protecting his innocence and happiness is my top priority in life. I hope you find peace. It's not easy. 💗

I'm so glad Lorna points out all of the medicine was prescribed. I admit even when I was 14 years old (Roughly Judy's age when this started), while I had been educated about drugs, if my mother and my doctors were both telling me I needed those meds and it was ok to take them I'd have done it. You can't really blame Judy for that. Who's a 14 year old to question her mother and her doctor.

What amazes me is all the mistakes the guests made. Mickey said (his first movie with Judy was a Hardy picture, which is totally incorrect. It was throughbreds don't cry.) (Ann Miller also made several mistakes.) Especially the story about how Deanna Durbin ended up at Metro, and how Judy ended up at Metro. She wasn't even close about Deanna or Judy. But she sure thought she was.

Willa Green yes, that’s what people don’t understand. Judy never went around the block to a dealer and took street drugs. Everything she took was prescribed to her and was considered perfectly legitimate. But of course what she took back then, amphetamines and barbiturates, those are now illegal substances and are no longer perscrptions. But there’s no evidence to suggest that Judy shot up heroine, sniffed cocaine, or smoked marijuana. Every “drug” she took was “prescribed” to her by a Doctor which she got from some type of pharmacy, she wasn’t buying them from a drug dealer or a hustler on the street.

I'm happy that Lorna didn't have to be put through the trauma of police officers showing up at her door to inform her of her mother's death. At least she was able to hear about it from her friend's mother. I mean it obviously was still a shock of course, but not as much as it could've been.

Lorna is a very capable singer/performer in her own right. I wish she would try to do some more of her own material rather than just singing her Mom's songs. Rather than do as Liza has done, which is try to sort of distance herself a little bit from her mom and build a name for herself in her own right, I feel like Lorna has sort of just fallen to making a living out of her mother's legacy...

"She was a very good mother" is right up there with Liza's oft-repeated "Mama was such fun!" It's understandable that the kids would all want their mother to be remembered fondly, but the "good mother/such fun" stuff hardly accords with the facts. Judy was zonked on booze and drugs for much of the time she was responsible for those kids. There are multiple stories of Liza or Lorna having to hide her pills, deal with overdoses (accidental and deliberate), endure mentally unstable behaviour and take part in midnight flits from hotels when they could no longer pay the bills. Maybe Garland managed to make all of this feel like a romp, but I somehow doubt it. And even if she managed to minimise the impact on her children, none of this is anybody's idea of good parenting.
@TheTuellfamily
@TheTuellfamily 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for pointing out these facts. I grew up in the home of alcoholics and drug addicts and the nature of addiction means it is impossible to be a good parent. Drugs and alcohol always come first with addicts. I have no doubt that Judy Garland loved her children (in the only way she knew how), but that doesn’t make her a “good” mother in my opinion. It seems like Lorna is very concerned with people only focusing on the good things about her mother while she wants the bad things minimized. She seems to have some issues with codependency.
@ozvoyager
@ozvoyager 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheTuellfamily Children will often try to minimise the impacts of unstable parents. They love their parents and don't want anyone to think badly of them. They also don't want to be seen as "damaged". But clearly both Lorna and Liza were damaged. Both had various addictions and were in and out of rehab. Both made some fairly questionable choices. Liza's string of odd marriages virtually echoes her mother's (gay men, father figures and shysters - or a combo of those).
@TheTuellfamily

Nowadays in 2021 a lot of info is on the effects of childhood trauma and a dysfunctional family. I don’t know when this interview on Larry King live was but the last few years so much info is on healing from the devastation of growing up with parent who were alcoholics or addicts. There are 12 step groups like ACA and books on it. So yes it’s important for children such as Lorna to come out of denial and get honest about the devastating effects of growing up in an addicted dysfunctional home.

Lorna has made a career out of being "Judy Garland's daughter." And, she'll never let you forget it." Anything in her book, I've read in countless other Judy bios. Yet, her account is suppose to have weight, because she's the daughter? Give me a break. There isnt anything Lorna doesn't know. Just ask her.....

I'm sorry .This interview is good BUT Lorna makes several mistakes in her answers. Liza is 6 years older than Lorna, not 7.Liza was born in 1946 and Lorna in 1952. That's SIX years.Also, Lorna sang with Judy at the Palace Theater in 1967, NOT 1968.I had the album, my first, of Judy's and it was 1967!!!!! Also, just for the record, all Lorna does is talk about Judy and sing her songs. She needs to get her own career!!!!! Liza did and I've seen Liza in concert 4 times; 1973, 1978 and 1979.I LOVE LIZA AND JUDY IS MY ALLTIME FAVORITE!!!!

Lorna was there. It was her family. Surely she knows how old her sister is. Their birthdates could overlap between 6 and 7. Me and my sister's do. A few months out of the year she's 3 years younger than me and then my b-day and it's back to 4. Judy played the Palace several times, it was one of her favorite venues. What Lorna is doing is wonderful. Yes, Liza went out early in her life to follow in her mother's footsteps, but in her own admissions Lorna had to fight that ghost first. Now she pays tribute and honors not only a legendary singer but her own mother's legacy. She continues and protects it. There's nothing wrong with that.
