In this candid and in-depth conversation we sit down for day 2 of talking about dogs, dog training, life, sorry, happiness, struggles and so much more. Everything you probably never want to know about me and Larry Krohn will be contained in this podcast. The first episode we did together was a huge hit, so I think you're gonna love this chat.

Training dogs has always been a mystery to me.. but I have trained horses since I was 8.. Then I realized how similar it is.. Now I am having success :) 😃 I have had great relationships with my dogs but suffered some issues, especially when I ended up suffering from chronic illness and could not take them on mountain rides. Live and learn. I train every day for 10-20 minutes. 3 dogs.. all working breeds..

Hi guys. Just a short history of my experience. I just lost my buddy after 15 1/5 years. With his passing I had to acknowledge that I spoilt Baron and let him get away with too much. The reason behind this was I was just devastated by the loss of my previous dog, Sako. I have been watching your videos about dog training so that I can learn how to have the best dog possible. Larry mentions high drive hunting dogs ( that was Baron to a T) I wish that I could have seen your videos on helping both of us deal with our problems. As for people saying negative things about you both, take heart. Social media gives people the ability to tear good people down in order to make themselves feel better without any consequence. They are cowards. You guys, who are doing what you do for the love of dogs are heroes. You give and give…they just take. Thank you

So many pearls of wisdom ! Amazing interview! Robert I’m with you on old dogs I do love puppies but old dogs have old souls that just touch me in away that’s hard to describe. Flavor of the week, I worry every time I see a GSD in a movie! I’ve had German Shepherds / Alsatians since I was 17 and trained my first avalanche search and rescue dog as a ski patrol man. I’m 64 now and have my 9th partner a solid black female GSD. She was rescued off the streets of a pretty rough town at the age of about 5 months she is now around 6 years old. When she came to me she was extremely dog reactive. She is no social butterfly at this point but she’s very obedient and will now sit quiet when being approached by a dog she does not know (as long as I’m there and instructing her do so). I don’t know if she will ever get completely over her stress regarding dogs she does not know. But I now know I can count on her to listen to me and not become aggressively reactive to dogs approaching she is not familiar with. It takes about 10 minutes for her to settle down now when introduced to a strange dog and except them as not a threat. I just have to manage it carefully. In all the years I’ve had dogs I had never experienced dog reactivity at this level or of this sort. Thanks to your videos we are now well on our way to solving an issue that has been frustrating and had me worried that I might have to give up on a dog for the 1st time in my life! Robert I simply can’t thank you enough!

Thank you both for all you do. Between you, your training has allowed my almost feral, horribly reactive rescue dog to become so well behaved and good natured that people in my village bring their puppies here for play dates with her and she helps teach and socialise them.

Love how you guys talk about 'organic' dog training. Dogs do learn on their own. Like the example of Dante sitting and then running to get his food as a puppy from one end of the garage to the other. It is not a 'training' but a fun experience driven by food motivation. So clean and natural. Also appreciate the raw truth of 'happiness' and how material things don't equate. We all get down and depressed. Speaking honestly about it really made me stop and listen. I can relate, more than I want to admit. Thanks so much for sharing.

This is a super-enlightening conversation on so many levels. Such great insights on- not only dogs- but just life and one’s philosophy in general. Also I gotta say that certain disciplines: cooking, photography, surgery, dog-training, etc have somehow become so male-dominated that the females who have such a natural propensity for them become bottom-rowed and unrecognized. Props to both of you for the shout-out to your so’s❤️

You two are the best trainers on KZfaq. No bS all common sense and most of all, empathy and understanding for the dog. The vast majority of dog issues are people issues , or breeds that are not suited to the situation they have been put in.

Yay!It is great to see you two. I agree about being in shape. I had.a terrible mountain bike crash and my poor pup has suffered because of the injury,, surgery and physical therapy & no bike for months. We are focusing on scent training but there is no real fairness to Titus. Thank you Robert and Larry for a great podcast, so nice seeing you together. I got my 1st dog only 2 1/2 years ago, a black working line labrador. He is a great companion and my only regret is why I didn't get one already 20 years ago. There is ton of information out there on social media, youtube etc. and for a beginner it was very hard trying to filter out the garbage from what really makes sense. Looking back I made a ton of mistakes but thanks to experts like you guys I am on good track and have a well behaved and fantastic dog. Thank you so much for all the valuable information you have shared and keep up the good work. Seasons greetings from Iceland

I have raised my soon to be 4,and soon to be 3 German shepherds (male/female) on your training videos. I dont do alot of tricks or neat stuff. I think in Larry's video long ago,he said at first he just wanted a very behaved and obedient dog,thats what I to want to achieve. Every time I watch your guys videos,it insires me to get after it a little harder,and what I've learned is,my dogs are teaching me too! Hi, I didn’t knew any of you guys, and although I don’t share all your principles, I really liked this podcast,. Just one little observation regarding women or weak people may not have the capability to train a big dog, just want you to think a little, about horses, dolphins, elephants and all the kind of animals that are in fact train by humans, that no matter what will always be weaker than the animal. If strength is the tool that will just not be possible, women are capable of more than have children and be more patience. (my native language is not English so I hope all I wrote was understandable)
@RobertCabralDogs
@RobertCabralDogs 2 жыл бұрын
I respect your opinion. My position has nothing to do with sex or size but rather an ability and desire to train. If you have neither at least have the physical strength to control the animal.

Hi Robert, Thank you for this great interview with Larry. Been following you for a while, but in particular Larry, who luckily guided me through a few calls for my puppy but, as he pointed out in your interview, I was able to learn most of everything from his videos, and some of yours as well. So thank you, but also, amazing to see you guys are actually friends. Question: you briefly touched upon that subject in the first part of the interview, but I had a question around genetics and more precisely, breed instincts. I own a Norwegian Elkhound, so strong instincts in various ways. But breeders of the breed, like many I suppose for different breeds, are quite keen on keeping and encouraging those strong breed instincts. Some of which, I feel, are sometimes not compatible with the way I want my dog to behave (either around other dogs, or commands I ask of him, etc.). Although I don't want to ruin my dog's long history of great instinct, I also want a civilized dog. I was wondering what your thoughts are on the subject and those seemingly incompatible aspects? Hope I made the above clear enough :) Thank you for all your work
@palestripe6187
@palestripe6187 2 жыл бұрын
I think this is a situation where one should research various breeds and find a breed with the temperament that best matches what you are looking for, instead of having the traits of perhaps an incompatible breed watered own to suit the person. I do protection sports with my two malinois, which is what they were bred to do. I would not want a Golden Retriever breeder to breed away from the breed’s temperament so that it would be suitable for bitework.

WOW!! What a raw and beautiful conversation! I was a monthly member of your online training website, but after listening to this Robert, I decided to go annual. A small way to show my appreciation for all that you do for dogs, their owners and us fellow dog trainers! The term 'role model' is thrown around a lot these days, so much so that I think the term has lost the power which comes with it... a society that sees an Instagram influencer as a positive role model is a lost society! To me, a role model is an individual that possesses an admirable personality, they are a guiding light that inspires and their skills, achievements and behaviour are worthy of emulation! The title Role Model is not something I give to people easily! Not in my career and not in my personal life! Dr Ian Dunbar has been the only true role model in my life and my career, that is until now. Thank you, Robert. And, sorry for the public display of emotions post... Ewwww... NOT something I do very often!! LOL

I have problems with differentiating what is the best course to take. No 2 trainers do the same thing. All trainers have a different approach. So if you are trying to learn from social media because you do not have the money or access to a quality trainer, it gets very confusing. Even reading their books. All of them have a different approach. I have 2 Corsi. It’s been tough, but luckily I have a husband that grew up with Dobermans . I would hate to know I had to try to figure all this out on my own. Cuz I dearly love my 2 monsters.

Robert please help my wife and I bought a puppy english bulldog 11 weeks old 5 yrs after we had to put down our other bulldog for multiple bites to us which I lost part of my thumb he would attack you if he was sleeping and you made the slightest noise we tried everthing I was bitten 7 times and mybwife was bitten 13 times but losing part of my thiumb made us finally realise what had to be done it was the hardest thig we ever had to do. This puppydid the normal puppy biting and has since almost grown out of that he is now 6 months old the only corrections he gets are leash pops on a martingale then posotive reinforcement with an object he is aloud to chew but he started to growl recently and snaps at us when he recieves a leash pop for junping on furnutue and chewing things he's not suppose too . I watch you and Larry Krohn vids and podcasts you both say that dogs need corrections fir doing negative things or growling but you really never say what the corrections are beside pop on leash. In this podcastvyou said your dog would not run off because he fears the corrrection he woukd get but what is it? We do not want to go through that horrible irdeal of putting another dog down or keep getting growled at and bitten please help sir.

I work at a shelter and Tex (the gsd) is kenneled next to 3 other gsd who all came from a hoarding case. He is the alpha of the 4. Hes just fine with me when it doesnt involve his kennel...but the last two times ive gotten him out as soon as we take about 3 steps out of his kennel...he comes at me...jumping and snapping. If you wanted to hire an electrician to rewire your house ,would you hire the electrician who understands electricity, who has a license to be an electrician, and experience to do so ?or ?...would you hire the electrician who doesn't really understand how electricity works ,but has wired his own house enough to feel confident enough to wire your home? Please don't think I'm trying to say you're not capable of training, because clearly you are, but there is definitely a benefit behind knowing the science

@@Apex_K9 your comment makes my point. I would hire an electrician who has proven he knows what he is doing. I'd look for experience and referrals. Someone who has done a great job for many years on many projects is worth more than person who graduated a fancy school. does the electrician need to have a masters degree in electrical engineering? Since there is no "license" to be a dog trainer, that doesn't come into play. I would not look for an electrician who has studied the history of electricity or who knows the science. I would look for someone who can get the job done... find a good trainer and don't fall for the BS "science based dog training" hype.
