I didn't find A THING WRONG with your conversation. I found it refreshing that there are still men willing to be real men. Thank you boys for almost 2 hours well spent. I'm a nearly 60 year old woman who actually raises Rottweilers on a, small but, actual ranch. Cattle, sheep, horses, chickens... it's not easy. The dogs must be well schooled and supervised at all times until mature enough to understand whats correct behavior and what isn't. They must also have a yard that is livestock free and secure for both them to stay in and the momma cows to stay out of, so that when unattended everyone can stay safe. 😉

Long form podcasts really separates the good from the great! I appreciate getting to know the real personalities of trainers. Thank you for the content I always learn something!

These two guys are great for the dogs and trainers. I've rescued some big scary dogs that were set to be destroyed. Dogs need a balanced method. No positive only trainer would get near these dogs. Heavy handed E-collar guys would have fried the soul out of them. So glad to find sane trainers like Larry and Robert to learn from.

Got my first pupp in my life year and a half ago. Because of these two guys and balanced training I can let her off leash everywhere and recall her and I'm not even using an e-collar. She is still super young but better behaved than any dog in my town. Tnx boiz and keep doin what you doin! 🙏🏻

I can't get enough of you 2 guys! You explain things so well and have such a love for the dog. Listening and watching your videos has helped me so much on identifying things I'm doing wrong that confuses my dog. My dogs first experience was a positive only trainer recommended by our vet. That wasn't working. Started searching for other options. There are so many dog training videos on the internet I;m so glad I came across you guys.

Robert, I have been training dogs since 1969, am a 68-year-old, 5ft tall female. Due to my age, I only work with companion dogs and traumatized dogs. I am trying my hand at making KZfaq videos. I have so much respect non BS trainers as yourself, Larry, Jay, Joel Beckman, Sean O'Shea, Micheal Ellis, Nate Schomer, and Will Atherton. I presently live with 7 dogs who are mixes of, Border Collie/Jack Russell. Lab/Pitbull. Rhodesian Ridgeback/Egyptian Pharoah Hound. Australian Cattle Dog/Catahoula. American Fox Hound/Catahoula. Larry, you perked my ears up when you said "it seems all I'm training now is Dobermans".Because on the Doberman groups when anyone asks I always give em yer name. You were a lotta help when we got our last Dobie. To be honest the previous dogs were my wife's, they choose her and I didn't take a big interest, busy with work and all. But this one was different, primarily because he choose me. I knew I needed help and scanning the internet I found a lotta different trainers, but you seemed more down to earth, honest and realistic. You've been a blessing man.., I thank ya. I'm not saying I had anything to do with any of those people coming to you... but it would be nice if I did. Kind of like a repayment for all your help.

What I see a lot in what is lacking in young dog trainers is lack of handling skills. As u mentioned, basic leash skills, touching the dog aside giving affection. Really being hands on, and not relying too much on only handing over food.

I have been a dog groomer for 45 years. People, mostly women, have told me I can't brush my dog because he won't let me. I used to be like, he's 10 pounds! How in the world is it that a 10 lb dog controls you?! But I stopped arguing after I got more experience. I just manipulated them into a short clip. Or refused, if they couldn't brush in between grooms. Because I learned, if one does not have the wherewithal to figure out how to brush out a dog without inciting resistance and biting, I didn't want them to even attempt it. Poor dogs.... The owners can be very dopey. And/or lazy.

The good news about reward based training is that my clients really aren't that bothered about it, especially when they've tried 3 of them already. To have the discussion is absolutely essential .....and we have to keep showing the work.,.only hope.

Coming from a "white liberal" I have to say that liberals in a nutshell won't destroy the country, radicalism on both sides will because the government doesn't do shit for us, and the more we divide the worse it will get. I'd like to genuinely have a conversation with two open minded people such as you and Larry on why you think radicalism happens on both sides. So often people are so quick to disagree and end the topic, but I think you could learn a lot from me and me a lot from you. Don't you? Anyway, ruffle feathers and keep speaking your truth, maybe one day everyone will come together again and agree things need to change for the better. Take it easy fellas.

Larry is such a teddy bear. The first time i saw a video i was hooked! He has a patient, loving way of training ! i love that you can see he really cares for the dogs he trains. I think you can feel safe leaving your dog with him. You could tell hes honest. Hes not afraid to show the soft side of Himself and for a Man To be able to do that shows confidence in who he is. Also He used to be an agent too that's pretty sexy!❤❤ove his training videos. I love To see rob and Larry the 2 best Trainers together. It was real , Funny as hell and honest. Both of you are too great Trainers that really put excellent content for us free and i thank you. Soo so funny! They better not I have a German shepherd I die if they ban these wonderful dog . I really love you two guys. You’ve both helped me learn some tools for my Belgian Malinois/ Turkish kangal I adopted a month ago . He is a year old. I still intend to take him to a trainer but until then I’ve learned a lot and thank for arming me with tools . You two are brilliant men. Great character.

Great conversation on all the topics. I have followed both of you off and on for several years now. I'm fairly new to pet dog training (3 years) and choose the positive + route incorporating games, treats and toys but I'm open minded and want to hear your "balanced" side. I love the fact that you both start out the basics with treats and toys. Just in my short time of training I realize there is no one size fits all in training a dog. And the dog has to have fun, otherwise, what's the point. The reality of dog training is actually training the dog's guardians so they can practice consistently the "good" behaviors they want from their dog.

My two favorite trainers. I am a lazy trainer but learn so much about dogs from both of you. My dogs are well behaved and we have a good relationship and that is enough for me. I do insist on absolute reliable recall for safety, especially since they are often off leash. I have used old tritronics collars to enforce command when necessary but never need to use collar more than once or twice. The newer sophisticated collars and techniques of training are definitely intriguing.

You two are the reason why I sought out better ways to train. I grew up in the 80s in shutzhound home so very old ways of training.

Love the honest talk and calling out some of my pet peeves like neutering dogs especially before their skeletons can even form properly. There is so much evil done by “The Pet Industrial Complex “ to dogs and most of it to sell convenience to ignorant people who shouldn’t even have a dog. The truth of that is a threat to a $100 billion industry.

lol We had a Two Guys by us, too. I'm in NJ. K-Mart, Korvettes, Kresgee's. My mother was the disciplinarian in our house. Funny stuff, guys.

The overcrowded shelters are no joke. I recently started working at one and it's over capacity. The number of people just abandoning dogs is very concerning.

If 40 years ago we had social media, we would have witnessed the same fights between dog trainers. Most of these disputes are really about competion. Pride and money, drive these personal attacks. Attacks on Dog Daddy started when his online numbers skyrocketed along with his financial revenue.

Yet a lot of them Who are criticizing you that are all positive aren't even creating video content so how could they compare! There aren't many Positive that I've seen online there's a few trainers that show their work and then they criticize you guys which isn't fair. I think they're jealous Because they See you're successful. you guys are the 2 best trainers I watch you guys constantly ! I go back-and-forth between the both of you! you guys are great And I always said you could tell a lot by a person by the way he talks about his wife and rob you always talk good things about janet and Larry does the same thing I've noticed larry talks about how beautiful his wife is I heard it on a few of his vids. I notice Things like this. I'm a nut I guess . Lol I just believe you could tell a lot about a person by the way he respects his other half. The municipal shelter discussion was interesting. I agree about the spaying and neutering of young dogs, but the law in my state requires it before a dog in a shelter can be adopted. Age does not matter. Now technically the law says "sterilized", but shelters and most people are not going to pay or seek out a vet that will do a hormone sparing sterilization like vasectomy. I was also interested in the discussion about people "adopting" dogs that may not work with their lifestyle. I know you guys are aware, but when shelters are making this decision they are often in the position to *know* if this dog is not adopted, more space is not made, that either that dog or another will be euthanized to make more space. So if someone that lives in an apartment is interested in the vocal Husky that I know may sing the song of his people and annoy his neighbors in the building but still wants to adopt the dog after I explain the possible issue to them should I just continue to discourage them knowing this will result in dogs being put down? I have always been torn about this and I honestly don't have the answer. It could be that dog goes home with that person for a week or two and comes right back, or there is a small chance maybe it works out. I have absolutely seen dogs which are "broken", either they have some genetic defect, brain injury, tumor or have been treated very badly that are dangerous, aggressive and should not be put back in someone's house. Even those dogs likely could be managed by the right person, but my experience is there just are not that many people that have the experience or will be able to put in the effort required to ensure the dog does not injure someone. I had someone years ago tell me their standard was "would I want this dog living with someone on my street or in my neighborhood?" There are many dogs I would not want living with my neighbors. I have also seen many more dogs that are just scared or confused (as you mentioned) in the shelter that "act" aggressive as a response to that emotion. Most of the time someone with time and experience can tell the difference, but often I think people just don't get it and many times the shelter staff just don't have the time to make that assessment. I have volunteered for years at a city shelter and I personally struggle with these issues. I have the ability to train my own dogs, I am not a dog trainer. I watch both of you guys because I learned a bunch from you both. Sorry for the long comment, I watched the second half of this video after getting home from the shelter and to be honest I was feeling a little burned out with it all.

Loved this podcast and you both. I believe in what you said that e collars should not be sold to just anyone! Should be to trainers only. Joe public buy cheap ones, with zero instructions on behaviour. Often I have clients who come in and have done this and we have to turn around and teach correct behaviours first then, layer in collar. We always start with using it on a happy recall!

Animal or human behavior is always determined by a cost-benefit ratio. If the cost (consequence) is not greater than the benefit (reward) of a behavior, the behavior will not change.

Both of my Wifey Bishes keep saying I only have big dogs cos I need them to feel safe. So I brought a Yorkshire terrier and he is the worst now I really am one of those guys. You know the type. Cool 😎.

Loved every sec of it. You guys should sit and seriously think about preserving and passing your knowledge to those who will come after you, bc video format is proven to be inefficient for any kind of retrospective learning: videos aren't searchable, nor they are easy to structure and reference. They are too heavy to store on phys devices and really hard to navigate, not to mention that a hoster(KZfaq) can put them down any second. It's also time-consuming and hard to share with other ppl. One solution I can think of is using an AI scrapper to generate text off of those videos and then rework it all into three blocks: 1) general approaches/philosophy of dogs-first training , 2) practical solutions(aka cookbook), 3) projections( problems that gotta be addressed by future dog trainers; current goals you are up to solving) Then release it as an open-source project and let other like-minded experts to maintain it, fork it and iterate on it further on.

So true about excuses. When we placed service dogs with parents with autistic children, the first thing we had to overcome was the parents' belief of what their child could learn, and could change. The parents, understandably, believed, that all their child's dysfunctional behavior was caused by autism. First: Not true. Some of the behavior is simply human behavior, and Secondly: Even when true, most of that behavior can be mitigated or eliminated. When "can't," is a deeply embedded belief in our minds, we will be limited in what can be done to improve the behavior. This is not to say, that everything can be changed, but rather that most can be changed.....but we have to believe that. Excusing bad behavior is never acceptable, and will lead to greater problems later. An explanation of behavior is not an excuse for behavior.

Absolutely fantastic chat. I have American pit bull terriers and German shepherd s and five cats the dogs are forced to respect the cats and one another they behave for me simply because I am NOT permissive and expect good behaviour from them they do as there told when they are told I am the leader and they keepin their place. Can I say I have the happiest dogs ever BUT I would not recommend this mix of animals as they need special and constant care and always crated when I am not around ❤❤ love the chats ❤

When my child was six, she take a pencil Eraser from a store. When I'm notice it, drove back and take her tothe manager. She appologise amd return The Eraser. After that, she nevera takes something is not her.
