Looking back, you can really see the influence Ali had on Holmes style. At the time, it would not have stood out as much because Ali had set the standards for heavyweights. Fourth years later and there were not really any HW fighters at that level that carried the Ali style. Holmes was unfortunate in the timing of his rise to the top because the dearth of competition in the late 70’s thru mid 80s meant he never received the respect his skills warranted.

The top 2 reasons in my opinion. 1. Holmes had the misfortune of being HW champ right after Ali and right before Tyson. 2. His fighting style was often more point based. He didn’t have the flash, presence or personality like Ali (who TF does ?) nor did he posses the dynamic power and intimidation factor of Tyson. Holmes just wasn’t an exciting champ for the fair weather fan base. But for those who are more educated in the “Sweet Science” we are all well aware that Holmes is a top 5 all time HW.

Well, I think everyone took notice of Holmes as one of the greats. The problem came when Holmes took advantage of the greatest of all time,(Ali who was a old man with Parkinson's). Really Holmes never fought Muhammad Ali.That would have been a good fight.Im certain Ali would have won.So that was a curse Holmes lived with ( because of the love of money). So No one respected Holmes completely. It would have been better for Holmes not to take the fight with Ali.And just except he could never fought Ali because Ali's Time ran out To prove my theory is correct, Holmes got Karna. Not because Tyson beat him, but because of the circumstances.Holmes was reflecting on the Tyson fight he had saying " I was three years out of retirement , I was 38 years old etc.Well worse for Ali , 2 years without a fight , same age about 38, as well as Parkinson's.Ali was shot.So that is why Holmes never got the respect he wanted. He never fought the legend ,the greatest Muhammad Ali.

@@josephturner9012 When a man professionally fights someone, a loss is a loss. Muhammad Ali being the greatest is an opinion. His stats say different. He never ran from anyone and was the only boxer in history that scared a world champion enough to make him throw one of his belts in the garbage to keep from facing him. Holmes was a hell of a boxer. He was extraordinary. Don't degrade Holmes because of Ali's errors. Ali was far from perfect. His record as a boxer has nothing to do with how he stood up against the Government for refusing to join the Army in Vietnam. Those are too separate things. He gets points as a man for that but not as a fighter. Ali lost to fighters Lennox would have never lost to. Forman said it and so did Holmes and so did Holyfield. At the beginning of the clip after Holmes pushes Berbick away, Holmes calmly walks to his corner like a boss, totally turning his back on Berbick as if to say "I ain't even worried about what you gonna do." Even his cornermen don't seem concerned about Berbick hitting Holmes from behind. Eddie Futch just looks at Berbick as if to say "Are you lost, son?" Even when Holmes finally turns around to face Berbick he has his mouthpiece sticking out of his mouth like he's not worried about Berbick at all. Great stuff -- Soooo chill.

I think Larry taunting Ali as he beat him despite the obvious fact that Ali was clearly deteriorating athletically and mentally is what made people lose respect for him. Then Tyson sealed the deal with his promise and fulfillment of avenging Ali. Without that, I see no other reason someone as undeniably talented as Holmes is not being mentioned anymore than he has been as being among one of the top 10 greatest of all times.

Larry Holmes had so many great fights! At his peak he was tested severely, but always won out. Losing to Spinks is on the record but debatable. Larry was very unpopular with the press at that stage. When his 49th fight was compared to Marciano, he said something to the effect, that Marciano wasn’t fit to carry his jock strap! Larry was a straight talker, not a charmer or a bullxxitter. His consistent winning through adversity is the mark of all great boxing champions.

Larry Holmes' job is a thing of beauty: lashes out. Right-cross in combination straight as an arrow, too. 60's Ali was awesome and though his defence was actually pretty risky (as he relied almost entirely on movement) he had almost everything and would probably beat anyone. Though that 1 weakness would have been most exposed by a fast long jab-which Holmes had 70's Ali relied more on spoiling, heart, a solid chin and clever tactics. Ali was better THEN against fighters who wanted to get in close, where he could tie them up and hit them with short, fast combinations. A boxer who stayed at range like Holmes would probably have got the decision on ring control and punch output
