Great laser level tips & tricks, and how to use a laser level and eliminate the math when checking elevations. I will also show you how to use a cheap big-box store laser level for site grading.
No you don't need an expensive rotary type laser to do your own site-work!
I will show you how to make a simple "gage" block that makes using your laser level
a much simpler & math free process.
The laser level I used this video finally passed away, R.I.P 10 years old !
I have replaced it with this Bosch Laser level, working great so far.
here is a link if your interested (Bosch GLL 30)

Hey Brian I just watched this video. I just purchased a Bosch Laser level and they don't explain how to use it correctly. I purchased one a couple years ago and got frustrated try to use it so now I'm retired and want to do things around my house. You are the first one to not only explain it but actually physically show how you use it. Thank you so much and God Bless you Sir really appreciate it and I also subscribed to your channel God Bless America 🇺🇸 🙏

Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video! Excellent! I like you yard stick idea and to make it even easier, I use a store bought "find the center yard stick" where the middle is zero and it automatically increases in each direction just like your shop made stick. When I am not using for the laser, I use it in the shop to find the center of boards. Thanks again, Bill

Super helpful. I'm preparing to set six 8x8x12 rough-cut posts (~ 200 lbs each) on sub-grade footers, and I've been stressing over the thought of having to top-cut (and notch!) them from a ladder after I anchor them with a second pour of concrete. With this method, I can do all my cutting before I set the posts. You likely just saved my life--or at least one of my hands. Excellent.

Good advice. You mentioned a rotary lazer. I recently purchased a Hupar, 360° green beam, self leveling, non rotary level. I'm very happy with it and it's about 1/4 the price of a rotary. The green beam is also more visible than the red
@BuildswithBrian
@BuildswithBrian 4 жыл бұрын
Yes green beam is more visible, but even on the less expensive, lower wattage green lasers , they still suck in bright outside light. I have a firecore green beam 360 laser, and it’s better, but not by much.
@mijodo2008
@mijodo2008 2 жыл бұрын
Great video Brian. When using your laser to measure in any two directions 180 degrees apart, as in your driveway, you need to get that laser level 'Dead Level' before measuring. If not, your laser level will really compound the level inaccuracy. This is where an Automatic Rotating Laser Head is far more accurate, much faster, and is a one-person operation. The problem with a fixed laser position, you are constantly chasing the beam, which is a nuisance when working on undulating and rough ground. Love the Story Stick 'Over and Under' demonstration, the essence of simplicity. You have the neatest handwriting Brian. Top Job Mate. Cheers from Michael Australia.
@BuildswithBrian
@BuildswithBrian 2 жыл бұрын
Actually there is a flaw in your reasoning there, the laser level I’m using in the video, and all basic laser levels whether it’s rotating or fixed beam, all have a self-leveling pendulum inside that keeps the beam level no matter what the rotation or direction. Level is level😁
@BuildswithBrian
@BuildswithBrian 2 жыл бұрын
But you are right about chasing the beam when using a fixed Laser, and it being more of a two person job in some situations. However this video was to show how you can do something without an expensive rotary laser. Thanks for your comments much appreciated.

Another option is to use two rulers and just set them so they each measure from your zero point. Two 12" rulers are very cheap. Also a couple of levels or a corner post level would keep the pole perfectly vertical. I do like the setup you make it is very cool. I just Subscribed to your channel !
