I always compare 10th's scale to money. 100th's are like pennies, 10th's are like dimes, quarters, 50 cents... so on, one foot obviously being a dollar. Makes guys more comfortable thinking about it.

I have spent the past hour watching your videos. I have been doing landscape (fancy for mowing) for several years and recently got an awesome deal on a backhoe and want to make a move to excavating. I have dug a shitload of holes and trenches at my house now and I am comfortable with my digging abilities but don't know anything about the technical and planning part. Watching these informational videos and helped me decided I need to find an experienced excavator who is willing to let me work part time and learn this part of it while I continue with my landscaping is probably the best way to learn the trade. I can operate the machines but want to learn the business.

Hello. New at this. I am excavating for an addition to our cabin. Going 9ft deeper so we have a walkout garage. I purchased a Johnson Laser level kit. I plan to set the laser to the top of the existing foundation wall , then go to the lower excavation site and extend the rod 9feet and set a point off to the side As my grade level. Am I right to do it that way? Or is there a better way. Thanks Ron
@DieselandIron
@DieselandIron Жыл бұрын
You'll need to know how deep your footing needs to be along with the thickness of your slab to account for that. From there you will add that to your 9 foot difference and that will give you bottom of the hole.

At 12:05, I thought that was funny. I, too, am in America, but we use Stabila instruments (mostly LAR 350's and LA180L's). The back side of the Stabila grade rod is in inches ("Imperial") -- but in 1/8" increments using hairline graduations. If we have to use 0.1 foot measures, I pull out the old CST/Berger grade rod. I used to really dislike metric, but over time, I've become a real fan and use it whenever we can.
@DieselandIron

I'm with you all the way. I'm actually angry that we were told the US would convert to metric and then we didn't. Metric is SO much easier in EVERY aspect. Volumes, lengths, weights, across the board. Anytime I do woodworking now I try to use metric because it is so much easier. Damn you imperial system...

What do you do if you are measuring for a walkout basement? Clearly you can't start at the bottom. Do you start with the laser at the top and use the pole at the bottom and just extend the pole with the sensor until it beeps?
@DieselandIron
@DieselandIron 8 ай бұрын
You would start with your laser setup at the top of the hill like you would any traditional basement. Using the story pole you will go to the bottom of the hill and determine where you want the basement to daylight. Set your laser "eye" at that height and away you go.

Anything worth buying is going to set you back around $1000-$1500. If you are serious about getting into the business then you don't want to skimp on the laser. Cheaper lasers aren't powerful enough to have decent range in bright sunlight and the accuracy dropoff is much higher than a better quality laser. If you want to save a bit of money you might want to leave off some features like being able to set a slope or cross slope with the laser.
@rshotty9039

I have looked at several videos, and nobody wants to explain how to read the rod when you begin extending it! Where to place the Laser detector on the rod and how to read the rod when the rod is partially extended. Must you extend in graduations from the fattest part of the rod to the narrowest piece? If I put my detector at the top of the rod for example, but the laser hits the rod on the second extension (i.e. 8' 6"), how do I read that? Those the questions inquiring minds want to know! hehehe :) Great video, but I feel a BUNCH of details left out on reading a rod properly. Thanks :)

I could...and probably should...do a whole series on using grade rods in different ways. On this video I'm moving the eye up and down on the rod. What you're describing is an alternative method to using the rod. In that method we would fix the eye to the rod and then slide the rod inserts up and down to figure out the difference in heights. Let me see if I can make a couple more videos on grade rods in the next month or so.

@DieselandIron
@DieselandIron Ай бұрын
10ths is far easier than inches. You can move around and world of 10's quicker than a world based in 12. No conversions, no calculators, just quick elevation changes. This is why the metric system rocks. We had to bastardize our system to make it look metric.

But on the laser receiver ,when it is beeping, what does each tick mean. For example, if it's beeping fast (to go down) but it's halfway way shaded. That's 2 ticks out of 4. Does each tick on the up or down beeping, represent 100s?

@infamoussuperstar09

@@DieselandIron thanks , but I dont mean the lines on the grade rod, I mean the shading on the receiver itself. For example, if you are significantly high, it won't beep at all, but as u get closer, it beeps with full shade, but the lower u get, the less shade. Are u saying that each bar of shade represents one less tick until it's no shade at all, which is flatline
@DieselandIron
@DieselandIron 3 жыл бұрын
@@infamoussuperstar09 right. If you look at the arrow it is divided into 5 marks, each represent a hundredth. The laser will start to beep when you are 5 hundredths out which is half a Tenth. Why have you got the level rod upside down? Also if you are a draftsman/surveyor type that travels with a calculator, Inch/Tenths makes no difference. Fact is if you just look on the other side of the rod you will find 99% of Inch rods have tenths of feet on the back side. ,,,,, And life is easy with inches when you are using 8" block or any other American building ,material.. (Say I'm at 5.3' - how much deeper do you tell the operator to get down to a 6' deep footer made of 2 course of block on a 4" conc slab? - Hint, 2-8" coerce of block is 1.33+' )

That was brought to my attention after this video and it is an incredibly good method to use. Eventually I'm going to remake this video

Please switch to the metric system. The rest of the world can't all be wrong. I was told by engineers that America pays more for everything being imperial because the rest of the world is the same measurement the USA pays more for so much because of basic cost. Iam from the UK and can easily use both but trust me if you used metric for 6mths you really wouldn't want to go back. Plus all your engineers already use metric and have been for a long time.

A lot of people think construction is mindless work. It's not, there's a lot of complicated math and thinking involved!

You recorded this video in mirror image so that the image is backwards. Was it not possible to record it with a proper image? Watching this is quite annoying, which is unfortunate because your content and presentation are otherwise very well done.

In hindsight, I could've flipped the image horizontally but this video was made early on when I was just learning to edit. Unfortunately, I'm committed at this point😂

10ths of a foot? Sounds like you guys bastardized towards the metric system. LOL! Whatever works I guess.

This is the part that makes me laugh so hard about the American construction sector. We as a country have fought tooth and nail to keep using the imperial system and yet we have to jump through hoops to make it more like the metric system so it's easy to use on the job.

@@DieselandIron there's a Canadian contractor that does a ton of DYI. He offers the imperial system. Takes all kinds.
