I put a disclaimer at the end making sure people know I'm not attacking LGBT+ creatives who really want to get representation on but can't because of advertisers or risks in getting canceled. The fact that this barrier exists is the problem, and it's something that's really hard to fix. She-ra had good rep in different characters before the last season. But there is a structure around She-ra in which explicit romance wouldn't have been able to play out until the last seasons when stakes weren't high. Supernatural is different since they queerbaited to hell, but it suffers from the same structure in which they decided "oh well its the last season, why not." Our system creates these types of incentives.

I absolutely agree with you, but Hannibal actually never bothered me. I never really needed a kiss between the two of them, the bond between Hannibal and Will always went far beyond "Disaster gay couple" (which they absolutely are) for me. Hannibal isn't really last minute, the show is literally based around their relationship, not just as lovers but as a whole, and even in the final season it was clear their relationship was more than friendly and they had feelings for eachother

I feel like She-Ra did it right: not only did they have multiple LGBT characters before the ending, the show literally revolved around Catra and Adora's relationship. It was weaved into the entire plot, premise, conflict, and conclusion of the show to the point that you literally cannot watch it without it. I feel like so many LGBT characters made just for rep are just sorta tacked onto the show and have no impact on the overall story, so the fact that their relationship WAS the story all along makes it so much more satisfying. ...admittedly, I also have a weakness for drawn-out yearning in my fictional relationships so that's ALSO probably why I enjoy She-Ra so much (unfortunately it's also the reason I was a Destiel shipper for so long 🙃)

Dean has big bi energy. My headcanon is that at some point John made homophobic remarks when Dean and Sam were young, and it stuck. Maybe Dean realised he was bi, (in early seasons I really got the 'vibe') or more likely he realised he wasn't strictly into women. Imo he seemed to have a thing for men in uniforms and cowboys lmao. He didn't mention anything about being straight when a guy in the bar hit on him. His reaction to Dr Sexy was... interesting... and he was affected by the male siren when Sam was totally fine, taught Charlie, a lesbian, how to flirt with men... I'm not trying to insinuate anything ahem but it's certainly... interesting. It also feels like he's overcompensating, trying to be increasingly masculine, something many LGBT+ people do to try and 'fly under the radar'. And these are all just examples WITHOUT Cas. Back to headcanon, he has somewhat made peace with it internally but was no way ready to acknowledge it out loud, especially to other people. He didn't want to ruin his 'uber masculine' image, and maybe he still had internalised homophobia thanks to John. He was definitely not ready to react in a reciprocating manner when Cas outright said he loved him. In my own experience, in the classic teenage gay move my best friend fell in love with me and realised she was also not straight. I panicked, kind of didn't talk to her for a while, but hey at least she didn't got to super mega hell. Dean is in shock from the confession, and even more shock from the fact that Cas just, died in front of him(again). Cas died without knowing if Dean loved him back, or even accepted him. Pretty sure Dean, self deprecating bastard that he is, is going to hate himself forever for that. Dean has never been good at ~feelings~, homeboy has the WORST case of emotional constipation I have ever seen in my life.

While I agree with your premise, everybody is jumping the gun on Destiel. We have two episodes left imho we should refrain from forming an opinion on whether Dean is reacting homophobically or not. Also I don’t think he is, if you’re someone who has been watching the show for a while, he is in shock. He’s emotionally constipated and I don’t expect anything else from him than stunned silence in the few seconds he had to absorb massive amount of information and chaos that was being hurled at him. Also I don’t know where the Jensen hate is coming from, the acting was perfectly in character for Dean. Other than that I agree with your points. Listen, I get and agree with a lot of your points, specifically with the whole destiel clownery, and yes, our community DOES deserve much, much better than last minute gays, but I think your commentary on the animation part really undervalues and overlooks all the hardships those series had to overcome and how much they changed the industry. Korrasami was barely allowed to have the hand-holding ending as Nickelodeon was so, so heavy in cencorship yet their "last minute gay" meant so much to so many people and truly opened the door for representation in animation. Bubbline has been not just briefly hinted but shown as much as possible through the 2010s under Cartoon Network's oversight, and after all that fighting the crew did theywere finally able to get a kiss, which was a further step than Korrasami, and showed the results of all those years of organic relationship building. And She-ra? The Catradora kiss was one of the biggest plot points in the entire series, was literally designed that it couldn't be cut from the show in any way, and even though the kiss was last minute, calling the relationship itself a last minute gay??? Makes Absolutely no sense because Catradora's bond was the core that carried the entire series, and the gay aspect was always, Always there from the first season. Like honestly there hasn't been a moment of the series that was not gay and that shouldn't be ignored just because they only officially got together in the end. Yes, as a sapphic I want to see established relationships. I want to see all the different aspects of gayness be explored and I don't want to wait till the last second to have it. And oh god I certainly don't want gays that just pop into existence at the very last second as a settlement. (cough v slur cough) But to show these series among examples of deliberate cases of queerbaiting is really doing them a disservice considering how they, along with Steven Universe were the milestones of lgbt representation in animation and have paved the way for many new shows today like The Owl House or Kipo.

I know "last minute lesbians" is a fun alliteration, but Korra and Asami are not lesbians, they're both bisexual.

Let me say that there is a huuuge difference with Hannibal - they had a chemistry built up through the whole show, since the very first episode, Bedelia explicitly said "Yes." to Will's question "Is Hannibal in love with me?" and that is way different from "Does Hannibal love me?", this means actual romantic feelings. And that wasn't the last episode, as I recall. Also, Bryan Fuller is a huge hannigram shipper so he must have planned it all along, just as with Alana and Margot. And there are different explanations to the last scene but I've read they didn't actually die, they just fell off. Also, that clingy hug? That wasn't only third season's thing, it was also in the second season in the kitchen massacre. Please, don't connect Hannibal with Supernatural, the romantic subtext in Hannibal is really well done and the show doesn't deserve comparison to such trash. To Supernatural fans who are going to get mad at me, this is not a subjective statement, Supernatural's script, effects, sometimes soundtrack and even characters (Uhm, Crowley being literally stolen from Good Omens, anyone?), that is a straight-up disaster.

People don't realise that the reason we prefer gay relationship isn't because we want to turn everything gay, it's because their relationship is way more fleshed out, they're friends, they tease each other, and that's what we perceive as relationship material. Most gay people don't immediately know off the bat that someone else is gay to openly flirt with them, so their relationship usually starts from very little and progresses, and whether that's fast or slow is up to these people afterwards. Immediate attraction and obvious feelings are a thing that only straight relationships have in the media, and calling us stupid for shipping people with the scraps we're only ever given anyway, is homophobia at it's finest. We're just trying to pick up cues and clues where we can the same way we would irl because that's what we know, that's what straight people allow us (at least in homophobic communities). Also what we perceive as "gay" for a lot of us stems from our families. For me what I consider "gay" is everything I can't imagine the men in my life doing aka sharing deep feelings openly, crying, hugging people etc. You can't bully us for asking for these things and when we're only given scraps to insult us for trying to work with those.

The thing with Hannibal was, they had planned for the show to be longer than it was, and they got cancelled at the mid-point of season three, so they had to tie up the storyline. Also, it wasn't "last minute". They had been building up to that point emotionally for three seasons as Will came to terms with being in love with Hannibal. The whole second half of season 2 was a seduction plot, with Will's plan de-railing as the relationship become more and more intense. And literally everyone involved with that show has been trying to come up with a way to resurrect the show for more seasons. Bryan Fuller has even hinted on Twitter that Season 4 would have been the story of their escape to Cuba, possibly after that stinger clip where they were implied to have eaten Bedelia. Their was even a deleted epilogue scene where they were implied to be back in Florence together in a Church, wearing pale suits, and the whole impression of the scene feels like a wedding. I mean, I've seen your Hannibal "Are they Gay?" video 5 times now, so I know you know they're a couple, but trust me, there was nothing insincere about that show, and they did everything they could to deliver on the relationship as authentically as possible.

While I agree with the video's stance on leaving all the queer confirmations last minute, I will have to beg off calling any part of the crew and cast as homophobic. For Destiel, Richard Speight Jr (Gabriel, and the episode's director) has confirmed that the scene was meticulously made as Dean/Cas, with Jensen, Misha, and Berens all engineering the scene, having been set up from the start of the season. The set-up of Cas' handprint on Dean's jacket were Jensen and Misha's idea. People keep saying Jensen didn't want to be part of it, when he's actually one of the ones who worked hard to orchestrate it. Not to mention the scene by the end where Dean just sits all broken by the floor, hacking a shivering sob. Scroll through all the times he lost someone in the show, and see what follows everytime he loses Cas. This is just par for the course and somehow worse in his silence.

as someone who has been a pretty big fan of spn and has watched all the episodes and new live ones, it’s not a homophobic reaction from dean. not hating on ya here tho because I do understand that someone who hasn’t watched all the eps wouldn’t completely understand (also I love ur videos tehe). But dean Winchester has always been someone who has repressed his emotions and there are a lot of indicators of this throughout the seasons. in the scene where Castiel says I love you, dean is just shocked and confused because this was all put onto him in 2 mins and just before cas told him about his empty deal that cas sacrificed his life for jack but only when he felt happy. So when cas told his truth he realized that happiness “wasn’t in the hanging, but in the being” he was taken by the empty in order to save dean from death (like The Death). cas has been taken by the empty (which is what you refer to as super hell, which it isn’t) before, but he got out because of jack. Many fans like me expect castiel to come back, we have 2 episodes left. so I’d be interested to see a thorough video from u after u finish it all (if u do lol I know it’s a lot hah) because I truly do enjoy ur videos, but i wanted to let u know that fans of the show and shippers are actually really happy with how it played out. well as long as cas comes back lol.

I think everyone is being a little hard on Supernatural, and I say this as someone which reaction to this was a lot of frustration and I was so angry at first that I couldn't sleep that night. And still a lot of the opinions I see are really not just... This is gonna be a long comment so probably not many people will bother reading it, but I will feel better writting it so... here we go... I used to be a BIG supernatural and destiel fan, and when I say BIG I mean that every day the first thing I thought about in the morning was Supernatural and every night when I went to sleep my last thoughts were about Supernatural... FOR YEARS. I stopped watching the show around season 10 because I was getting frustrated and instead of joy every episode just gave me a lot of worries, it stopped being a fun thing for me so I stopped watching. I'm more or less aware of things that happened in the show after I started watching since I used to see some spoilers here and there and even watched a couple of episodes that seemed interesting even if I wasn't following the show anymore. I have a lot of problems with the confession scene and what they decided to do but I want to adress a couple of criticisms that I don't agree at all: - Dean "homophobic" reaction. This is the one I seen the most, people watching the scene and saying that. I assume most of this people are not familiar with the show and the character and watching his reaction with no context I can undertand why they would think that, but they are wrong. Dean's reaction makes total sense in that scene, this is not just Castiel confessing his feelings, this is Castiel telling him he made a pact and that if he's happy he will DIE and then starts his confession, Dean is processing the information (about the pact that he was not aware until now), he is confused and it takes him a while to understand what is happening, he asks Castiel WHY that sounds as a goodbye, because Dean who is very confused and scared right now (because he already lost Castiel several times before and everyone that watched the show knows that he didn't take it well then) is starting to realize that Cas is in fact saying goodbye, that Cas is gonna die... I don't know what face people expect Dean to do in that situation but the one we see is the one that fits his character, he's confused, he's scared, he's still processing the situation and he wants Cas to STOP AND NOT DIE. Then Castiel finally says I love you and fucking dies... and after that Dean is on the floor crying and ignoring his brother calls (anyone that watches the show knows that Dean has to be VERY affect to ignore Sam's calls, because protect Sam is like... his first directive). I know that most people talking about it don't even know that Dean ends crying on the floor because most of the videos going around are just the confession and end the second Castiel dies. Dean reaction wasn't homophobic, it was totally coherent with his character and the situation he was in. - "Jensen can't act." This is related to the previous point, people see that video, they see Dean face and they have the nerve to just say that it's because Jensen can't act. Jensen is amazing acting as Dean, I can't comment on him interpreting other characters (since he hasn't done anything else since starting the show) but he's very familiar with Dean and his interpration of the character is always AMAZING. I only see 2 reasons to say that that scene is bad acting, or you just hate him or you are not familiar with the show and the character. I'm gonna put an example of another show and character, Lan Wangji on The Untamed. Lan Wangji is a character that is difficult to read and barely shows his emotions, but when you see the show and become familiar with the character those emotions become SO CLEAR. I've been on twitter talking about how happy Lan Wangji looked in a gif, and people not familiar with the show were confused because "He doesn't look happy. What are you all talking about??". That is just an example of how important is sometime to KNOW a character and be familiar with their reactions to understand them. People familiar with Dean Winchester as a character see this scene and can totally understand why Dean is reacting like that. Jensen wasn't being a bad actor in that scene, you all just aren't familiar enough with the character. - "Jensen is homophobic". This is a common one right now too. Look, as someone that was like I said VERY into the fandom I'm very aware that Jensen had his ups and downs with destiel (like he had with wincest), but it was never that bad as some people seem to believe, it was mostly a couple of unfortunate comments (look, some people just don't want fanart of them fucking or erotic fanfiction or things like that to be throw in their face, and that happened to Jensen with both ships, sometimes fans do things that really out of place) and he become more comfortable with it with time. Jensen is good friend with Misha (even if the part of the fandom that hates Misha insist with cero evidence in their favour that Jensen hates him), and filming he's to blame for a lot of destiel scenes. I'm not that into the fandom now so I haven't confirmed if this is true, but people were talking about how Castiel leaving the mark of his hand on Dean at the end of this last episode wasn't in the script and was Dean idea as an homage to when Castiel raised him from perdition. This being true wouldn't be a surprise since both Misha and Jensen have improved Destiel scenes before. None of that sounds homophobic to me, and even if he hated the ship it would not mean he's homophobic. One of his aunts that he has a great relationship with, is married to another woman. Jensen and Misha are good friends and Misha is bisexual. I don't know Jensen Ackles personally, I can't with segurity say that he's not an homophobe, what I can say is that I see more things against that idea than in favor of it. - "Misha is homophobic" I had to read this with my own eyes and I can't start to say how ridiculous. - "The screenwriter for this episode was homophobic". The screenwriter for this episode, Robert Berens, is a gay man. I know that this episode has problems, I know that the bury your gays trope is there... but stop attacking this man because he did what he could. Look there is a lot going behing the scenes, I remember all the drama when I was still in the fandom and I'm not gonna go now into all the drama with writters, showrinners, producers, etc... that would be LONG and this comment is already massive and nobody is gonna read it, so... I'm not going into it. I'm just gonna say that Supernatural has not a coherent writer's room, the showrunner determines the direction of the story and tells the writers of the episodes what they need to incluse. Castiel was gonna die this episode, that was not Robert Berens idea or fault, and Cas was gonna die because he was happy, that was decided since Castiel made the deal with The Empty (or super hell like everyone is calling it) I'm not sure when that happened because I was already out by then, but I'm pretty sure it was like 2 or 3 seasons ago, so it wasn't Berens fault either, it had to happen like that. When the episode aired Berens even liked one tweet about how it's gross to bury your gays. This man had to work with what he had and he did his best. There is more things I would like to say, but this is already SOOO LONG, nobody is gonna read this and I already talkied about the points that bothered me the most about people criticizing the scene, so I'm gonna just try to conclude this quickly. Personally I have my problems with how they decided to do it, but since this is not the final episode I will reserve my verdict until the finale. If we are very very lucky Castiel could come back (this is supernatural, everyone has died and come back so many times) and he and Dean could end together, in which case all my anger and frustration about this scene would be gone. I would be so ok with that, I don't care if it's a "last minute gays" in a show like Supernatural that would be a f****** victory. If Cas doesn't come back we could still get some confirmation that his feelings wasn't as unrequited as he thought, and I will be still angry at the scene and at the ending, but it would be better that the last option... this is Cas goodbye, he doesn't come back and his feelings stay unrequited. This last option seems like the most probable for me, but that my be because I'm a tired person that lost her faith in this show long ago... If this is what happen I will feel free to talk about how much a hate everything they decided to do. But even then my previous points still stand... nobody is trying to be homophobic in that scene (not Dean, not Jensen, not Berens) they did with scene with love for the ship and the fandom, they did their best, sadly their best may not be what we wanted and may be "too litle, too late", but we can blame that on producers and showrunners not on the people that TRIED. Well... I better shut up already.

There are two things that I believe you're getting wrong with what happened in 15x18. First, Cas was not sent to "superhell". If you watch the show, you know that he was sent to the empty. There's no pain there, no torture, no moral implications of real hell. It's just the afterlife for angels and demons where they're supposed to endlessly sleep. Second, if you are aware of how screenwriting works, you can see that the "Dean can't reciprocate" is not telling Jensen how Dean is acting. It's telling MISHA how to interpret Dean's emotions. Cas still thinks Dean can't reciprocate. And can you blame Dean for not breaking down and confessing his love too? Dean was just overwhelmed with so much in this moment.

Most of this isn't the fault of the creators, they do these things on the last episode, because if they did it before, the show would be cancelled. Korasami actually opened doors for the others, they were very important

Honestly, I think this is just a tv trope. There’s straight couples as well that wait to the last episode to become a thing. Examples off the top of my head are neds declassified and Lizzie Maguire. There’s probably other examples, but I think tv networks use this to get more ratings for the last episode if there’s a ship finally coming together

Uhm.... Jensen is the opposite of homophobic and Dean is also in love with Cas , he simply didn't have time to even figure what was happening before the angel died. Wait and see. Dean has evolved a lot and the entire season 15 revolves around Dean accepting who he is and defining his relationship with Cas.

In the most respectful way I can say this , Please don't associate words like homophobic casually next to somebody's name who openly supports LGBTQA+ community, when i played your video i was excited to listen to your thoughts but i had to stop after what you say around 1:25. Jensen Ackles is a great man and a remarkable human being, Jensen understand Dean Winchester better than anyone else , obviously, i can elaborate on that more , if you want. Whatever you see on the screen is ACTING by the actor, following the script written by writers. Further , I'm glad that Cas loves Dean and said everything that he did in that scene , I'm over the moon about the whole DeanCas story. Again please dont call Jensen labels he is NOT.

With things like Bubbline and Catradora, you could tell that at least a good portion of the creative team was on board with it, it was more an issue of the studios or countries the shows would be aired in, and in the end both pairings were CONFIRMED confirmed and have been further supported by the teams in other content

not to be rude but i feel like you may not have done your research before filming this. jensen isn't homophobic and i'm sick if people saying that. that's a horrible thing to call someone without any actual evidence. i also think that dean's reaction was very in character. he can't reciprocate because cas dies immediately after and anyone who has watched supernatural knows that dean is the kind of person to repress his feelings and not show them. he didn't even have a chance to properly react but he did break down sobbing after which is huge since i don't think we've seen dean EVER do. they're also not burying the gays, they're burying everyone. literally everyone on earth except dean, jack and sam died/ disappeared in this episode so it really isn't about them being gay. also, cas didn't get sent to "super hell" like many are calling it... he got sent to the empty which is the place all angels go to once they die and sleep for all eternity. we might even get him back seing as it's supernatural

Dean reacted in exactly the way supernatural (and deancas) stans would expect him to react. It’s mostly non spn stans that are firing in with their opinions. His reaction was fine in context of the episode and especially his character.

To think Dean is gonna say, yeah me too to Castiel's confession just wouldn't ring true to Dean's character. Yeah, he may come to it in about another 5 seasons of soul searching, but not in a nanosecond.

Alrighty, I have a long response to this, because you prompted a question and debate. Genuine Question: How is it baiting if the intention was for the romantic element to be real the majority of the time? Last-minute relationships aren't exclusive to gay/lesbian couples: Marco and Star, Sonny and Chad, Tony and Ziva, and Anne and Gilbert, to name a few. Honestly, ships make for good television. The problem is when they tease with no follow-through (bait), and with straight ships you know confidently there will be follow-through. Ok, sure, Misha/Cas wasn't supposed to be a part of the show for long. Then, at first, it was jokes. But at a certain point, throughout the shifting of the storyline due to irregular showrunners and writers, Destiel was starting to be treated seriously. I assume the crew behind SPN approached execs and the higher-ups and fought for Destiel (keep in mind SPN has been around for 15 years, now 3 presidential elections, as a society we have changed and become more progressive). Anyone who watched the show knows the narrative, about forced mark bond Amara and true bond Cas, the mixed-tape, widow Dean, the fact that Cas gave up an army for Dean, Dean kept Cas' trenchcoat from car to car when they didn't have Baby, "human weakness," etc. During the crypt scene, there was an actual bi flag that was projecting on Naomi's wall. It was a slow burn they have been building up for years. I don't feel baited; I feel validated. Because when people were like, it's platonic or you're seeing things, I know explicitly now Destiel is real. I was correctly following the narrative. Honestly, if Cas doesn't come back (which for now I think he will), the only way I will be satisfied is if Dean addresses Cas' love confession.
