LAST OF THE HOLDEN IRON LIONS, roller rocker diagnose and adjustment

This "last of the iron lion" series 1 vt commodore has been previously fairly heavily modified, 335 stoker, big roller cam (of unknown specs), single plane manifold with 4 barrel throttlebody.
After work performered by a couple of workshops it ended up in a no start situation with unknown rocker adjust.
In this video we go over the roller rockers finding some irregularities and get a base adjustment along with new spark plugs to get the car started.

All the good old Iron Lions were good engines but all had alot of similar faults that were correctable especially when working them Good to see another old school holden engine running you did a good job if it gets ticky it will need further investigation and if hydraulic lifters as you seemed of worked out should always be at zero lash with slight preload you are onto it

@Wayne Holzer They do appear to be a little forgotten sometimes in a sea of LS engines. It is very tricky when the specs of an engines internals are virtually unknown. With some further checks we should get ontop of it. Great to see there are still plenty Holden V8 fans out there

My 304 is clattering on the passenger side after I installed 4 new lifters, could this be because there not bled up?

My son's VT series 1 has some sort of noise in the top of the motor on the driver side. He thought it was a big ends but it's definitely coming from the top of the motor. He hasn't owned the car along I checked the wheel it's like way past the full line on a dipstick. I think it's just a standard 304 no work don't do it. It's like a quiet knocking noise when you put it back into park. But I took it for a drive the other morning and it was ticking away for half the journey and then when I've got back I'll put in the park I'm going to hear this quiet knocking sound. Any ideas? Are you in Brisbane or close to it? Cheers Graham

@Rohan Hunt With a new set of rocker cover gaskets and a degrease happening in the next couple days we'll find out more. Of course we'll bring everyone an update on how it goes

Std roller VT 304 blocks have shorter pushrods on std hydraulic roller lifters

@Jim Clarke 100% correct on that one. Im very suspicious about the wrong length pushrods being put in for sure

If it has a hydraulic flat tappet cam it must have a lot of lift looking at the roller rocker that has the valve open... Surely the owner has the cam card for what was in his new engine. If it initially ran for a while then the rockers got noisy it sounds like it may have whiped a cam lobe or the rockers were just poorly adjusted. Too many unknowns on that engine…. Good luck

@Big Al Yes agreed unknown modified engines are dangerous prospect when making adjustments. The engine had roller lifters and cam but unfortunately no one checked the part number when reinstalling the cam the previous owner had fitted. Still more checks to come on this one now its running so keep an eye out for an update soon.
