Welcome back to the shop! Today's video is a movie style time-lapse of building my timber frame or traditional carpenters toolbox. The video spans about 2.5 weeks. The toolbox is made from clear grain poplar and the Handle is walnut harvested from our property here in Tennessee. The toolbox was designed so that my timber framing hand tools will fit and can be carried to the job site. The design was inspired by the NORTHMEN GUILD. For this build, I used a combination of hand tools and power tools. The hand tools work really well for the jointing of the boards and the intricate parts of the build. All the dovetails and rabbets were cut by hand. The power tools really speed things along for cutting boards to length and dimensioning the stock. Thanks for watching!
Check out this video for more information of the upcoming timber frame build: • The Next Chapter!

Great build, Daddio. The only thing I would do differently is add dovetails to connect the bottom, which you didn't do. They would add way much more strength to the bottom, and when carrying heavier tools, as I used to do as a commercial carpenter, a fallout would never be a consideration. Look forward to watching the timber frame build.

Several years ago I built a box similar to yours. I used 3/4 plywood and I had two drawers in the bottom for chisels and misc small tools. The box looks really cool and works great. The down side is it’s weight prohibitive. Empty it weighs approximately about 25 to 30 lbs. with tools it’s 50-60+. I’m thinking of adding a set of wheels and a tow handle. That way I can move it like towable luggage! Yours looks a lot lighter and more user friendly!! 👍🏼👍🏼

Hey Mate, love the video and the hand tools used. I want to make something similar, but I am concerned about the cross grain construction that you've got at the bottom of the box. Would the seasonal movement of the base pop the dovetails. Or place stress on the dovetails over the years?

Very nice build and well done. I have a question though. Your end pieces have your dovetails going with the grain. Any risk/fear of breakage with the grain? Normally I see dovetails end grain to end grain. Thanks for the video.

@@lastingbuild1373 Fair enough. When I first started I did a sliding dovetail with the grain... 6 times before I figured it out. Yours should hold fine with the base, etc.

Nice friend ! The only thing I would have changed ( just my opinion) is to inset the bottom up in to the the box put dowels in to hold the bottom in the weight will be super heavy = the other thing is to make the ends taller 18" then you don't have to bind over to reach the handle = time will fill that box up enormous weight = but nice job SIR

Aw Jim. All that sweat equity to machine everything by hand you should have went with something better than poplar!!But this hand built must have given you a lot of satisfaction. I love the way your hand cut. Dovetails came out and the overall look and heft of the tool box itself. Also i love the soulful eyes of your sheep/poodle dog. Good luck with the start of the log cabin build. I sense that you live in one if the northern states so probably the actual build will have to be delayed a couple of months. Assuming that just about the entire build would have to be done outside on actual job site due to the huge scale if the materials being handled I mean golly just look at the size of the tool box. Big tools. Big box. Big project

Planing by hand will eliminate the high spots on a board that is twisted slightly, or cupped. Then the thicknesser finishes it so you have a nice board to work with.

I made one of these in the 1970 s I cheated though no hand planes was used and I used a router and a jig for the dovetails, I also put a swivel in each end so the handle could be pushed over so access to the tool box was unrestricted, because I cheated it only took 5.5 hrs to finish
