You can't know this unless you watched his show in the 80s but he literally, single handedly changed the comedic sensibility of the entire country. He created a new style of comedy & a way of looking at the world that everybody followed. He was the Beatles of comedy. And if you were a witness to it in the 80s, you know that I am not exaggerating.

Actually, a bad idea. Years ago, when Carson was starting the idea of guest hosts for his version of The Tonight Show, Steve Allen was a guest host...for only one time. I believe he actually thought the TS was his again. He was so rude and sh1tty to the TS crew, he lambasted them in front of the live audience when the crew was trying to get him situated on stage with a grand piano he planned to play. The audience got very, VERY quiet. He was never invited back.

@@pamelacass9642 False. You'll want to look that one up. Steve Allen guest-hosted for Johnny many times in the early 1970s - I watched the shows. Why would Letterman want to guest host when he can get bundles of cash from Netflix - way more than NBC would be willing to pay - to host A-list guests on his own terms and schedule. Guest hosts are apparently not a thing any more on talk shows - I'm surprised nightly talk shows are still a thing at all. They've devolved into making anti-GOP jokes and hosting near-anonymous subpar guests for steadily shrinking audiences. Maybe I'm just too old for it all. So is Letterman.

Dave is a legend. I watched him since the beginning and he was so off the wall. I loved the stupid pet tricks, Top 10 lists, throwing things off the building - you name it. He is insanely brilliant so he could interview and have intellectual discussions with some guests but could interview anyone and make them interesting. @@paultwebster9141 wait what? that argument that no one is perfect therefore no one should be criticized when they are wrong is extremely weak sauce. sometimes i miscalculated and tipped 19.5% instead 20% isnt exactly the same as decades of sexual abuse of power as he admitted on air.

@@omi_god yeah he said the same thing to women he forced into sexual relationships in the workplace. he does admit to all of it so there is that.

@@ColoringKaria I agree with your points... but in life there are no absolutes... justice is never applied equally across the board... I am not trying to minimalize Letterman's past behavior... it was egregious... and there should have been a reckoning for him... but all I see are double standards galore... where it always seems to be the low hanging fruit that faces the stiffer penalties... not really sure how to go about squaring that circle to be honest... I certainly do remember him facing up to what he had done... but of course he only did so when faced with the blackmail... and then the eventual, probable exposure... It's likely that some type of resolution was made (ie. money)... and quite possibly an apology... but the likely end result is that the trauma experienced will still linger within a person irregardless of any steps made to try and mitigate the damage caused... I certainly am not expecting you to change your views on Letterman whatsoever... it's just that I did enjoy his presence when I allowed him into my living room... and he definitely has skeletons in his closet, which I can agree should be concerning for probably everyone... but... for some reason(s) that are truly confounding to me at least... I am willing, like everyone in most instances to look past things and take a different slant from the one you are taking... Hopefully we can agree to disagree on this one issue at least...

Seeing Dave is a warm hug. Surely he should do a year of sometime again. Why not? I miss a letterman late night world.

I'm glad Dave admitted that Jack Hanna didn't know anything about animals as that was my suspicion after watching him on various shows for years. Jack always acted like deep down he was terrified of the animals.

What a treat. His show was the first I ever snuck a watch after bedtime. Probably the only thing about the 80's or 90's I cherish, so cheers to Dave and to the legacy still worth watching everyday, though on KZfaq now so there's that. Sorry Dave. Hosts, staffs and crews, ye olde and new, we love you. The show is in good hands and we all hope for decades more of greatness and above all, goodness. love and algorithms bumps from this 40yr old space-case.
