The Mapinguari looks very similar to a megatherium, a giant species of ground sloth that lived in South America during the last ice age. Perhaps this cryptid is a folk tale based on the ancient, cultural memory of these animals among the native peoples of South America.

In Mexico we believe la Llorona was Hernan Cortez mistress, la Malinche. She was an indian woman who served as a interpreter for the leader of the Spaniard Conquistadores, and whenever she cried, Ay, mis hijos, in the middle of the night these were the children la Malinche and the Spaniard Conquistador breed.

Ok, i see that a lot of Brazilian don't know about Mapinguari, now i'm question myself if they know about other folkloric creatures i grow up listen histories about, like matinta perera and others... Also, History Channel did a episode about mapinguari where they try to find Mapinguari at the Amazon forest (i don't remember the name of the TV-show, not good tho). Also, mapinguari is known in Bolivia, but i think with other name.
@isabelletinoco33635 жыл бұрын
Ana Luiza Maciel, I'm Brazilian and I've never heard about Mapinguari. I think because Brazil is so big we end up not knowing so many folkloric characters. You mentioned matita-Pereira and I did not even know it was part of the folklore. I had only heard in the song “Águas de Março - Elis Regina” (“... É peroba no campo, é o nó da madeira Caingá candeia, é o matita-pereira...”). I had no idea.
