Great lesson! I worked out these chords myself with capo on two a couple of years ago but in the intro play a few more single strings. However I didn't get the E7 so I will try that out. Great tip about the 3rd finger pivot point between Fmaj7/C and C. Using capo on fret 2 also means you can play the outro solo too which is good fun to learn. Thanks for posting. Lauren, OMG thank you a million time for this one (and the hundreds of other fantastic tutorials)!!! You have no idea how much you have inspired and helped me the past 3 months. The first two months was like hell... Thinking no way i will be able to play something decent the first year... or maybe ever! But suddenly, hard work really pays off, and i managed to play most of the basic chords, and finally can smoothly play the 'down down up up down up' strumming pattern. So i tried this song and after two days practicing I was able to blew my family and friends away! :D What a feeling! Still a long way to go, let's be realistic haha. Next step for me: learning to sing AND strum 'DDUUDU' at the same time. My brain says no at the moment :P All the best and keep up the amazing stuff you do!

Cool! Thanks. I been self learning for over 50 years. I play a few songs just to amuse myself. Last week I was with some family members and they wanted me to play Hotel California. They weren't interested in Spirit in the Sky or For What It's Worth or Ever of Destruction :b I had to tell them I'd have to skip on that one as I had never tried it. I think I can work this version and satisfy them next time. 🙂

It might be worth mentioning that the dreaded barred F chord shape is a little easier to nail with the capo in place. Good opportunity to practice it. 😊

Sylvia's Mother by Dr Hook. The chords are pretty straight forward and would make a great beginners song. However, I cannot figure out the strumming pattern! Thanks!!

Very good lesson, this is basically how I play it but using the barre chords instead of the capo to get better voicings and to some hammer ons and add some of the picked melody notes. There are at least 5 overlaid guitars in the studio recording after all so there is no way to do this song perfectly solo but playing around the 2nd Fret Bm voicing sounds more like the Eagles version overall than using the 7th Fret voicings Don Felder plays it at (again, when playing it solo). If you have multiple guitars then you absolutely spread the workload and voicings around and this song gets exponentially easier to play. The next step up is to play this song on a 12 string where it really comes alive.

That "mini" F barre chord is the one I use when I need to play an F chord. I just can't seem to make any full barre chord work. The places where my index-finger naturally bends prevent me from holding down the 5th and 3rd strings (and sometimes the 2nd string) so I never can get those strings to ring out properly. Makes playing a B-minor impossible -- I need to figure out a hack for a B-minor chord somehow. Having said all that -- this is *SO* much easier to play than the version with the full barre chords! Thanks!

Hi Lauren. I'm really having a great time watching your videos. I was just wondering, aside from not looking to your left constantly in the beginning when you are learning how to play the guitar/a song, how do we not get a stiff neck from playing. I know, at this point I should probably be complaining about my fingers hurting, but no. So, any advice on this will be appreciated.

Oh, I want to tell you that I get a thrill when I do actually look away and successfully land my fingers slap dang on the next chord simply because, YES I AM LEARNING SOME CHORD SHAPES. You have no idea how happy that makes me.

This could be related to tension. Many students carry a lot of tensions in their hands, which travels up their arms, into their shoulders and then eventually their necks. A lot of this should settle with time as you become more comfortable with the guitar.

Either works. You will build calluses faster with an acoustic, but electric is easier to play at first.
