What is your perception of lawyers? Do we maintain a healthy work-life balance or not?

I'm an aspiring law student sir. But as to what I see, lawyers are not healthy anymore. Haha I don't know anything. Educate me sir.

It’s true. Too many lawyers spend most of their time at work. But that is a choice.

As a full-time paralegal and part-time evening law student, I can tell you I have no work life balance. I work 45-50 hours a week, and outside of evening classes (which have been virtual this spring and summer), I clock at least 35-40 hours studying before work, late in the evening and all hours of the weekend. I keep “billable” timers for studying like I do at work for clients. But like you said, it’s a choice. For me, nothing less than an “A” will do. Excellence in all things. Even in “spare time,” I’m watching a law-related video in the hopes of bettering my legal endeavors. I think what is so bad about this culture is that the harder you work, the more it is recognized and rewarded. This recognition/reward feedback loop reinforces what is ultimately an unhealthy way of life. Even though I can recognize this, I have no desire to break from this cycle. Maybe that is perpetuating the problem.

@@Miss0ctopus1 oh man so this is what I'm going to be soon. Is it necessary to be a working student, having a part time job relating to law to exercise my knowledge for the future (becoming a lawyer)?

A friend of mine was caught in that cycle for years. One day her partner forced her to take one week of vacation. On her first day off in years she woke up and didn’t know what to do. That’s when she realized something had to change.

Professor Baez calling you underrated would be an understatement, you are helping so many future professionals by providing us these value packed quality videos. I assure you that your hard work and dedication is going to be payed off short term as well as long term equally. PS an idea for a future video would be one on the subject of master’s courses.

Thanks for this video. As someone who practiced in a law firm for several years, I couldn't agree more. The divorce rates are very high for lawyers it seems, similar to doctors. At the law firm where I started, the vast majority of partners had been divorced, many 2-3 times. This is just one lens of my experience where I have seen the "jealous mistress" concept confirmed in this profession. :)

Hi Professor Baez - I am just starting out and struggling with legalese. Can you please help me understand what it means when a procedural posture says, "the court of appeals affirmed the entry of summary judgement for the father. The litigant sought transfer of the cause for review" Does this mean that the appellate court agrees with the lower court's decision? So the defendant (father) is appealing to a HIGHER court (I assume supreme?)? Thank you very much

Most people who attend law school feel like they aren’t prepared and that they might fail-it’s called imposter syndrome. Keep learning about law school, like you are doing now. But more importantly, talk to some lawyers about their jobs. Discover if you think you would like the work, because many graduate and don’t like being a lawyer.

Being smart is relative. It's all about confidence. If you don't have the confidence in yourself, it's going to be excessively hard. Work on yourself first. Trust me. Then you'll be able to absorb information easier without the anxiety of "I can't do this" You can do this. But you *must* have confidence in yourself, and your entire statement screamed "I can't." Also, before going to law school, make sure to study grammar and when it is appropriate to capitalize words.

Why do you have this music on?? Why is there so much dedication needed? Because there are too many unnecessary laws. Everybody breathing on earth need to know laws. I wouldn’t recommend anyone go to law school.. you don’t need a mouth piece. You need to speak for yourself.
