For spiritual reasons I have done no water no food fast for 23 hours for Yom Kippur. Every year I did it the stronger I felt while doing it. I currently fast around 16 hours most nights for health reasons. I don’t have an issue and while eating I try to stick to a keto diet though I do not need to lose any weight and sometimes find myself starving around the 16th hour. Harvard trained nutrition and psychiatrist Dr. Ede shares keto is great for brain function this can be found on Dr. Caroline Leaf’s recent youtube channel it’s interesting info on the subject

This is a little off topic, but my Primary Care Physician told me he believes people are able to absorb information better after crying. It sounded bizarre to me but I noticed that when on the few occasions I became so frustrated trying to learn something (organic chemistry) that I actually cried, afterwards, I had more mental clarity and suddenly "got it." I've never tried fasting for any reason, but this was very interesting and something I might give a try.

The doctor is correct. Not just crying, but any emotion. I use humor in the classroom to help students learn the law better.

I experimented with intermittent fasting which I combined with a modified form of keto and an exercise program after I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in 2018. In addition to the increased cognitive function and increased energy you mentioned, I lost 68 pounds, brought my A1C (3 month blood sugar average) down from the dangerous 11 to 5.5 which is the high end of normal and my doctor took me off my meds. Covid depression and getting wrapped up in school and work has got me back to some of my former bad habits though, and I regained some of my weight (I know I can lose it again though). By minimizing my bodys insulin response I was able to heal my insulin resistance, control my blood sugar and lose weight. Insulin in addition to regulating blood sugar also functions as a fat storing hormone, the presence of too much insulin in the body leads to insulin resistance, obesity and in some cases Type 2 Diabetes.

I lost 30 pounds last Lent by fasting. I can confirm that it does help with focus, mental acuity, and inner peace. The key is to keep yourself very busy without causing fatigue, having an established sleeping cycle (making sure not to oversleep), and keeping a mindful attitude in all your work.

To take the other side, I know from extended periods of fasting that it can disrupt utterly whatever else is going on in your life. The psychological shift that can occur is profound for some people, where you have no patience left for anything but the bare basics of life. Your compassion can shrivel up, along with whatever generosity you have. Your goals shrink to the minimum, you can become obsessed with the science and commentary around fasting in order to convince yourself to keep going. It is a horrible experience for some people.

Just found your channel, and it seems very high quality!!! I ALWAYS respect that and it makes me want to subscribe to that channel 20x more. My initial reason was that I'm trying to learn more about the US legal system so that I don't get bit in the ass and so that I know how to properly and knowledgeably utilize the legal system to ensure justice for myself and my future family in any potential dispute.

Should make sure to note that prolonged fasting is only (with few exceptions) indicated for *adults*. If you're under 25, it's a bad idea because your brain is still (yes, really) developing. If you're a serious athlete (high school, collegiate, and above where you're expected to train several days a week), or otherwise do regular strenuous activity, also bad idea since you are actively using too many calories, and even intermittent might take away too many meal opportunities to keep a healthy body fat %. Since a lot of law students start after 4-year college, you might want to add that caveat--even with the, "make sure to talk to your doctor," qualification, we all know young people aren't known for their caution, so that extra warning would be helpful.

Fasting helps a bit, but it’s not a complete solution. You need short and frequent breaks. Here is a method I recommend: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pt-bibCHnMiwiZ8.html

Yeah this is true but only if it is not cold. Because in winter it's hard to stay warm and don't get stressed not to think about food because your body temperature is too low

It depends on the person. I began this in the winter. Below freezing outside and I keep my home fairly cold inside.

Great point! I’m overweight so losing weight is not an issue for me. But for others, you want to make sure you don’t lose muscle by fasting. I read about one very obese person who ate no food for nearly a year-he lost about 200 pounds!
