"Lawless Helford!" In search of Pirates and Kylie's Tree. Helford to Frenchman's Creek, Cornwall.

In our video today we follow a 3-mile circular walk from Helford Village to Frenchman's Creek. We wanted to find out if there was any truth in Daphne Du Maurier's novel inspired by, and called, 'Frenchman's Creek', a story of romance and pirates.
We discovered that Helford has a lawless past of piracy and smuggling. Piracy was recorded in the Tudor period by Cornish High Sheriff and Deputy Lieutenant of Cornwall, Richard Carew, who wrote the Survey of Cornwall in 1602. He describes pirates entering the Helford River, looking warily over their shoulders as they go, with Helford being commonly known by its nickname of 'Stealford'. Smugglers have used this river to disembark their cargo for onward transportation.
We also discovered that Kylie Minogue has used a tree stump in the creek to make a romantic video!
Perhaps this area, with its tranquil seclusion is many thing to many people but above all, it is a great place to take a woodland, creekside walk in a stunning location.

We watched this last night but didn’t have the time to write a comment - another fun filled video with wonderful scenery as usual. Loved the little church of St Francis…those eyes!!!! but, beautiful carvings. I have just read though the comments and someone said that they would love the ferry boat captain’s job, I’ll race you for it ha ha!! What a job ehh!. Well done Andrew and Sarah - smashing.

What wonderful travels. I love the gentle joys of your channel. My family and I rented a motorboat on the river and were allowed to enter the creek carefully, as it can be a bit shallow. It had such a quiet and secretive mood. The wolf with St. Francis may be the wolf of Gubbio. I believe that Frenchman's Creek was named after a real French pirate if I recall my readings correctly.

That is so interesting about the wolf! I Googled the story, and I'm sure you are correct. The intensity of the eye contact between St. Francis and the wolf figure really struck me. I'm in S. California, and the St. Francis statues I see here usually show a benevolent expression, as he reaches out to a bird, rabbit, or deer.

A charming and amusing video as always, full of interesting finds and an insight into the well known”Frenchman’s Creek” Novel & Movie, I didn’t know the story behind Kylie’s Tree, as I’ve said very interesting, and well done both of you for daring to create said event, I would imagine it would be rather uncomfortable 🥴 if I remember Kylie was known for getting herself into some strange positions while posing for the media! It was nice to see Mr. Snuffles thoroughly enjoying himself, he loved paddling and cooling down in that inviting stream, thank you 🙏 for another enjoyable video Andrew & Sarah 🤗

Such a fun adventure! I've read Frenchman's Creek twice, but it's been a while. I love the Du Maurier tie-ins, the research you put in, and the special bits that you share. The Kylie tree thing was a hoot. You are quite intrepid, and I also feared for your beautiful blouse. The tiny chapel to St. Francis is a hidden treasure indeed. That statue is so intriguing, the way he makes eye contact with the wolf/dog, rather than the introspective look of most St. Francis statues I've seen. Thank you again, for this lovely treat. :)

The tree walking was a challenge, the camera angle probably didn't show just how high up I was - about 8 feet from the muddy creekside but I am glad I did it! If I was younger, I would have gone further out! Sarah :)

Fabulous walk! ~ will definitely do it when I next escape London. You certainly bring us the very best of Cornwall...so often my favourite bits like this, away from the touristy hotspots (you've pushed 'Frenchman's Creek' to the top of my reading list!). You found a real hidden gem with that tiny chapel of St Francis...so beautiful in such perfect seclusion! Your dedication was really moving, a lovely thing to do, and no better place for it. That was a brave trek out to Kylie's tree ~ I was concerned for your beautiful top getting snagged on that holly bush! Your take on the video was certainly a (much preferred) calmer version compared to Kylie's slightly over-the-top gyrations! Love Andrew's swashbuckling! Keep up the brilliant work!

Hi! I really loved this walk around in pretty Helford village and the Frenchman's creek. The book is very good too 😊 We had sadly no time to do the walk this summer, and we barely caught the last ferry before low tide to cross the estuary. I agree that walking in "hidden" areas gives a very special feeling 🤩 We got a hint of that while walking around the Gillan estuary before Helford. that was very beautiful too. A few days later we also did the Hall Walk in Fowey with friends we visited in Liskeard. So we got to see Daphne du Maurier's house and the church. Beautiful and interesting walk. I love to get a better look at these areas in your videos! Torunn 🥰

There's a great little short story by Arthur Quiller Couch also called Frenchman's Creek which links the Myth around how the creek got its name to Captain Bligh of Mutiny of the Bounty fame.

Morning Kylie!! 😄Had to giggle at you trying to get along that broken branch! But you managed it (without ''Jason's''help!)😊Will be staying nearby here in October. So very beautiful and peaceful along the riverside and would love to try and find that little hidden chapel in the woods, but not sure I can manage such a long walk these days sadly. How far from the car park roughly is it along the path?Seems like you get an extra hour parking with a Blue Badge which I noticed on the car park sign so that might encourage me to try at least! Daphne Du Maurier novels are classic reading. It's a long time since I read Frenchmen's Creek but think I will dig it out again now. Good job you didn't go ''Spinning Around'' that log Sarah! x J x

Sounds like the perfect holiday read! The walk from the car park is probably about 1 mile, give or take and there are some chunky steps out of Penarvon Creek towards the chapel. There are plenty of places to stop and admire the view along the way! Sarah :)
