My best friend's daughter was killed by a serial killer who represented himself at his trial. When he was "cross examining" a witness, he said "This is my gun, right? You shot this gun at my house?" The lead Crown attorney told us later that she and the team had struggled with how they were going to prove the gun used in the murder belonged to the accused. He handed a key piece of evidence to the prosecution on a silver platter. If he hadn't been an egomaniac and wanted to make people listen to him, he may not have been convicted. If the whole thing hadn't been such a horror show it would have been funny.

Apologies for being morbid, but with how awfully this guy covers his ass, it's insane he was free long enough to become a serial killer in the first place. How did the cops not get this idiot the first time? He doesn't seem very smart.

@@oliverstray1040 The cops were a lot less diligent than they should have been in the first place. My friend knew it was probably him but the cops refused to go investigate him. They figured her daughter just ran away. And the second time, they figured he was telling the truth when he claimed his father just committed unaliving. It wasn't until the third victim's blood soaked pickup truck was recovered in the guy's garage that they realized something was up. Real life police investigations aren't like TV. But where he was really stupid was that there was a ton of digital evidence that he wasn't smart enough to delete from alllll his devices. A burner phone is only a burner phone if you throw it away. And don't use the dead girl's laptop and keep it in your house.

@@janets7291 I kind of expected this to be the reason. Unless you're a very high priority case in a big city, people actually competent at their jobs will never see your file. Feel like a lot of stories like this are a case of "Oh the detectives messed it up and now x people are dead, again." Any famous case demonstrates this so perfectly; "Oh, five boys disappeared in the woods? Whoops, lied about checking the emergency shed for people lost in the woods, sorry Yuba County 5..." or some shit similar, every time. My condolences for your loss, by the way.

I love the last case. You can tell the lawyer was just going off of what he was given - and the second he realized how fake it was (and that he was lied to), he rightfully called that shit out.

Assuming this is true, the ex-wife would have been arrested for threatening the judge, not for any of her misconduct throughout the case. Her father was not part of the threats (and pretty clearly didn't know about them or he would have stopped her), so there was no reason to arrest him for them.

I get the sense she was trying to get it admitted as having been sent to her by the friend, but the judge took it as her threatening him, not the friend threatening her. Lucky thing too. This could only have ended badly otherwise.

I think a landlord is allowed to enter your house, but they have to do two things first: They have to give you a warning before hand, stating the time-frame they intend and it has to be at least a few days before hand, they aren't allowed to just walk in whenever they feel like, the second thing is they have to explain why they're coming in, specifically they can only do this for inspection purposes such as checking if the fire alarms are working or if everything is within reason of the agreement that has been signed.

The thing about the lifting arm story, I could see that the witness may have meant "I can't move my arm to this point without extreme pain". It's like when I had a back spasm that lasted a couple of weeks and I couldn't walk. I actually could walk, but I would be in pain the entire time to the point I would be ready to cry after about 2 minutes of it. This is why you hire a lawyer to speak for you as much as possible. Layman fon't think about the power of their words or actions and that's how they get in trouble. Of course, they could have actually been a scammer, but in my mind it was most likely they were just trying to show The amount they could lift their arm out of pain versus extreme pain.

Ok, so Story 16: I’m glad it had a happy ending for the OP’s co-worker, but, after listening to it again, I seriously have to ask: after a couple of YEARS worth of trials, thanks to her psychologist father pulling strings in her favor, the psycho was presumably MINUTES away from winning…and she gives the judge a threatening note that all but claims she’s a dangerous nutjob? I didn’t think true stupidity existed, but I guess I was wrong. Also, I really hope her father was at least investigated for his blatant corruption and abuse of power.

I was representing the plaintiff in a low value personal injury case being tried to a jury. The client agreed to my tactic not to incur the expense of an expert doctor witness, the risk being that the judge would deny the admission of his medical bills into evidence. I wanted to appeal that denial as an abuse of discretion; the state supreme court had never held that a medical doctor was a necessary witness for the admission of medical bills. Sure enough, the judge denied the admission of my client's medical bills. The defense had noticed up a medical expert who happened to be the head doctor at the ER of the local hospital where my client received all his injury-related treatment. During the morning of the first day of trial, the defense attorney asked if I would permit him to call his doctor expert later in the morning in the middle of my case-in-chief. "Sure," I replied. When it was my turn to cross-examine the doctor, I retrieved the unadmitted medical bills from the court reporter and showed them to the defense attorney. Despite defense counsel's apparent seasoning, he stood up and said to the judge, "I don't know why I am being shown these." The judge responded, "I think we're about to find out." Indeed. Judgment for plaintiff.
