I can't say I was thinking ' I want a family ' when I was addicted and out of my mind but I can say without a doubt that if my daughter hadn't been born I would certainly not be clean and would most likely be dead . It makes me sad to hear about Layne wanting a family and having plans to get past his addictions and have a fulfilling life because he deserved those things. Not because he was a gifted and totally mesmerizing performer , which he was but because he was a good man with a big heart and a truly benevolent spirit . When I look at what I have now and think about the life I was living 15 years ago I feel really lucky. I wish Layne Staley had been able to have his family and a long happy life

It is truly sad how he apparently says Layne “was looking for a reason to get clean”. It’s also sad, yet extremely touching, that she says she feels guilt over his death and wondering if she could’ve helped prevent it. The truth of the matter is, no addict can ever get clean for someone else and codependency is just another form of addiction in ways. Addicts have to want it for themselves, for themselves alone. The saddest bit of all though is that Layne himself WAS entirely worth getting clean for himself. It’s a tragedy that he was so far deep into addiction & felt so worthless over it that he couldn’t understand that at the time. Addiction plays tricks on you in so many ways. We miss you, Layne 💔 The fans that matter remember you as the amazing artist and nothing less. ************************* “Sympathy’s easy. You have sympathy for starving children swatting at flies on the late-night commercials. Sympathy is easy because it comes from a position of power. Empathy is getting down on your knees and looking someone else in the eye and realizing you could be them, and that all that separates you is luck.” -Dennis Lehane

That is a brilliant quote when it comes to that matter and seems to be a missing key element of how many people look at life and approach people. In a completely different matter, but I think it has similarity, I worked with handicapped (both mental and physically) and Iam dumbfounded when I hear people talk about them in a condescending way because everyone of us is one bad car crash away from being in their position.

Great quote. Anyone who could write music and then perform it in the way he did, he was a total empath. Anyone who listens his music can feel that empathy. He was so young to take on the topics that he did in his EARLY 20s. Amazing musician. So, so sad he couldn't help himself the way he helped so many others. Twenty+ years have passed and his music resonates on. Much love.

@@k_ir3868 it’s exactly the same with people who have a disability or even the homeless for that matter! Different “afflictions”, yes, but it’s that same lack of empathy society gives people whom they consider less than themselves whom are at a low point in life or just different altogether. Most people are only one paycheck from disaster and it’s so easy for those people to cast such horrible judgment’s because it makes them feel better about their own situations. As far as people suffering with chemical dependency, people never set out in life to waste away as a drug addict as a career choice. There almost always is an underlying cause usually with some sort of mental health issue. The mental healthcare systems are so broken in most western countries so people with mental illnesses are left to sort those things out on their own. Becoming addicted in order to cope with trauma only adds insult to injury to further their suffering when they were stigmatized already suffering from mental illness. If systems were in place so people could get help, it could prevent so many cases of substance use disorders before they start. But most people don’t care until suffering affects them in sin form and that’s a very messed up take on life.

When I first read the title, I was almost certain that this would not be a true story. So many people make up stories about his final days, and I figured this was just another one. After listening to it, I think it's obvious that she is telling the truth. She isn't trying to brag or name drop, but express grief and regret, and to talk about what she wishes she did differently. @@Davinyl I don't believe Mike Starr's story. There are many instances where he has shown he is not trustworthy (will elaborate in a bit). Plus, he revealed this "last person to see Layne" thing only 8 years after his death, no one else corroborated that he ever said this sooner and it was on a television show called Celebrity Rehab. About the instances he was making stuff up, one is from Sound Engr. Jonathan Plum's story about when Mike arrived to record over Jerry's bass lines because "his mom was gonna be mad" if it wasn't him on the bass, another is way back in the late 80s noted in David de Sola's book, where Mike, Layne and Demri was at some bar (I think) and Mike told the guy at the counter/bar "I'm gonna be best man at his wedding" but the guy at the counter recalled there was no reaction from Layne or Demri. None of their friends and family corroborated that Mike was going to be best man either. Yet another is that he was kicked out of AIC. There are many reasons being said about this, but there were a few that I remember being the most trustworthy: 1) Mike hoarded AIC tickets and resold them at higher prices, 2) Mike wanted more creative control in the band (which I reckon he wasn't doing professionally, but behind Jerry's back), 3) As Layne said in a magazine, Mike was ready to go home (Mike later denied this and said it was more due to his drug addiction).

@@torigoth7487 A long time ago I read on a message board from a person who claimed to know the band members and told the same story about Mike, which I didn't believe until I saw Mike tell the same exact story on that show years later. This was awesome! Echoing “he wanted a reason to stay clean”. That’s always gonna be tough for surrounding loved ones…the user has to choose sobriety in their own name, but that’s a different battle. Plus, I’m picking up complicated grief undertones with Demri’s death… Michelle honored Layne where he was as well as herself with no judgement. That’s love. Grieving sucks and it’s hard, but it’s so rich in complexity bc it’s Earth’s greatest pain. So, so, so much love to her, Layne’s family and Daniel for this video❤️

Plus he had alot of people who loved him and plenty of reasons to change day by day. Getting good H back in the day was easy, if u want it bad enough you will succeed. Methadone helps get back a normal life while not being burdened by drugs and addicts. A clean break from the revolving door and dangerous lifestyle. Layne had to let go of the hopelessness and self loathing and that is hard to do physiologically, but i did it without family or many real friends. You're the lead singer of the most popular grunge band in the world! So many girls would sleep with you!" As already mentioned, she didn't sleep with Layne because she thought he probably had a disease due to intravenous drug abuse. The fact she was around Layne during the end days ("end days" meaning after 1996 when Layne left behind rock stardom/AiC for dope, video games and total isolation) is fascinating to me... Even the simple minutiae of his day to day to which she was clearly privy, would be fascinating to hear about because Layne is such a monstrously amazing vocal god mixed with that of a humble, compassionate personality. Music just isn't the same without his phenomenal and entirely original vocals and performances. That's a straight up fact! The King Of The Katz Is Dead, Long Live The King! All Hail Layne! 🤘💀🤘

I was a heroin addict for decades and able to manage my life. What really put me down to my knees was speedballing. Cocaine destroys your veins to a point that your blood circulation is giving up. My lower legs and feet started to get brown and they're cold as ice. The nerves are affected too, i broke my pelvis and my back (lumbar spine 3and 5), because i lost my grip and fell on a concrete floor. I was forced to stop because i was bedridden for 6 month and i'll have to use a walker for the rest of my life now. Never ever start with this shxt!

Agreed, my friend. I was an i.v. black tar addict for close to 13 years. And in the last 4 of that, it had become, "It's gotta be a speedball, everytime", or it just wasn't enough. The coke added back in some aspects that my tar tolerance had taken away, and so I became stuck mentally on the coke and tar together. Either it was both, or I'd literally go sick until I had both, even if I had managed to acquire one or the other already. So fucked up, SO fucked up. But yea, I may have od'd a time or two on the H alone, but it was introducing the coke as well that really started to take a toll on me, physically. I almost lost a couple of fingers (and nearly that whole hand) missing two huge speedballs on the palm-side of my right hand pinky and ring fingers. Took 8 days in the hospital to control the infection. Hand was never the same again. Broken rig tips off into my neck many times due to repetitively re-dosing into the same spot with the same rig (ah, cocaine. Amazing what it can do for your focus...😒😒😒). Ultimately, I was only able to stop all that bc I lost all my veins and had to begin muscling the shit, which as we all know you can't do with coke. And then once I almost lost an arm due to infection from muscling, I was able to finally give up the needle entirely. I still have those urges, however. Probably always will.

If anyone ever needed to be put into a conservativeship it was Layne Staley. Drug addicts are their own worst enemy. They always say tomorrow.. I'll stop tomorrow, gonna get clean tomorrow. When that doesn't happen it just fuels a deeper depression. 28 days, 6 months, 1 year.. not enough to get clean and sober. The dreams about getting high last for years. So much for MusiCares. Does it? *Minimum of five years employment in the music industry *Six commercially released recordings or videos (singles). Layne's mom said that Layne tried to get clean but he has a contract. There were people on the tour that depended on him... So he'd check out. That's the problem... The contract in the way of rehab. So, if they'd cancelled a tour got serious help, hired a sober coach to be with him 24/7. Layne may have had a chance. It would've been to everyone's benefit to have gotten him the right help. Leaving a drug addict in charge is never going to work out. 😢

The 24/7 Coach would've worked ..he needed correct help and someone to BE there !! I guess we can all speculate what he needed but he's gone .His thoughts fears and feelings of unworthiness are very apparent in his songs ..especially .Wake up..hits me in my feels 😢. Layne cried out many times but the responsibly of contracts in the music industry plus his loyalties to family/ friends kept him from loving himself enough to say ..ENOUGH 💔 and stay clean .Layne was so GIFTED in so many ways the most significant being unselfish to a fault. He had no arrogance to his Bigger than life self that we as huge fans see love admire !! FOREVER in our 💕 Layne Staley !!

One thing's for sure, you'll never find a reason to get clean except for yourself. If you don't want it or you're not ready even if you do good for a while it's not going to last. Sometimes some people want it to end but they're just not ready to let go or their brain won't let them let go of certain things that they will miss. ❤ Layne's passing just devastes me to this day. Everyone says he was such a sweetheart and he clearly wore his heart on his sleeve. He seems so accessible. Everyone still loves him and he left behind such a legacy. My heart aches for his mom,she is an angel, and Jerry. His heart was so broken. It is so painful to watch someone destroy themselves...especially someone so unbelievably talented and personable as Layne. I will grieve him until my last breath. I grew up listening to his stories through his music. Rest easy Layne...you are so deserving. Your wings are no longer denied.❤

I keep wanting this story to change...but it don't. Keep waiting on the next AIC album to drop. It don't. No offense to AIC with new singer...just not the same. Layne had "IT". If there's any person out there thinking drugs are OK (yes even Mary jane) I can't say with more sincerity to not do it. Once you do remember you are playing a deadly game of chance and the odds aren't in your favor. If it doesn't kill you quickly, which with what I've gone through would consider the better route, it'll kill you slowly and painfully. Your friends and family will eventually have to leave you alone out of self preservation. Your only friends will b demons. On the Marijuana comment, I think you need to have a certain level of maturity and self discipline if u want to try it. Don't believe the garbage u hear about it. It's not for everyone, especially younger kids still in school. I promise it's a mistake for 99.9% of you at this age. IMO. But what do I know I've just been living this for 28 years. Good luck

If your not using illicit substances because of someone else it will never work out. I'm speaking from experience both from myself and being in the field of counseling since 2016. Addiction is a chronic brain disease and its been proven. It takes day by day to maintain recovery and it's a lifetime battle. My mind still thinks about using at times and I have not used heroin since 2006, I play that tape through of what was and remember the terrible stuff like kicking and being homeless.

Great. I still work and pay my bills but I use heroin everyday and the days I can’t (like today!) are few and far between and I absolutely hate life. Now I understand why people couldn’t help him, why they couldn’t make him get clean, because I am now the addict. I don’t think anyone could come between me and my drug.

I always thought maybe they all just needed a really good reason to want to live or the right friends to get them out of the addiction. I'm not an addict but the many years I've struggled with depression tells me no one could've helped even if they wanted to. It's a battle you fight alone, win or lose. It wouldn't have changed anything. Trust me on this one. Been there, done that ... Once your addiction reaches that extreme, promises of loving relationships are no motivator. The only thing your brain *can focus on* is the neverending race it's in against the clock to fight off withdrawal symptoms. It's like the need to breath oxygen while you're underwater. You can't even factor long term goals into your thought process when all you can concentrate on is how long you can stay down before you have to come back up for air again. That's the way it is on that stuff. It's the most crippling slave master you'll ever know. Trust me...

There was more info on this online but a lot of Layne info got "purged" off the internet around 2008 and a new narrative was pushed by his mom and the crazy stalker chicks that became friends with her after his death.

Its none of our business but its always interesting when you see these human aspects of the rockstars we look up to. Fun fact, the woman in Scott Weiland's Tangle with Your Mind was Scott Weiland's fiance at one point. No idea what happened but him and her almost got married. I always thought it was funny cause she looked a lot like Mary.

My ex engineered & produced a lot of AIC's music. He was very close to Layne. There's a lot of gossip & supposed "official" stories out there that we've all heard, most of which are BS. The world really has no idea how tight the band was/is, and it never will, because they & those in the innermost circle will never give up any dirt about Layne. It's beyond irony that their most iconic album is called, "Dirt". VERY FEW people know what went on with Layne, especially after he quit the band. I too was skeptical about this video when I read the headline, and you're right, much of the info could've been gleaned from other sources, EXCEPT for one very small detail she mentioned that's only known by the inner circle. When I heard that, I knew she was legit.

Came across this again and have to say, this lady has no idea who Layne was. Everything she says is from tabloids. If she really knew who and what layne was about this would not even be a conversation she was having. Miss you friend as do all of us that lost you.
