It just hit me that Craig is one of our time's best philosophers, partially because he's a self-experimenter and practitioner, not coming across as a scholar.

The key to gratitude journaling is to writing WHY you're grateful. That was a major shift for me. Instead of 'I'm grateful for the walk I went on with my aunt' it's 'I'm grateful for the walk I went on with my aunt. I'm grateful to have such a positive person in my life who gives me hope. I really appreciate that she continues to make time for me.'

The insidious thing about depression is that I already know most of this and normally do it but with depression, I just don't care. I want to stay inspired for life but depression keeps me in my chair or in bed binging wheezy videos until the whole day is gone. And then I'm depressed I wasted a day. And then I'm depressed that I let something well within my control (getting out of bed) make me more depressed. But even though I know all this and want to change and be better tomorrow, depression ...isn't something you can just snap out of. If it were that easy, I would have done it by now. Some might say this video isn't about depression. I might have agreed with that if the title was "How to Stay Inspired" and left "for Life" off the end. I'm going to submit this comment and call my therapist now. Edit: Wait a second. Does that count as busting my depression cycle? ...hmm. Clever.
@cferracini
@cferracini 2 жыл бұрын
I think it counts. You did something. Doesn't matter if it feels small. Something is always better than nothing. It's what I tell myself when I start feeling anxious because I haven't done anything I wanted to do. I know it's a different issue from depression but I relate a bit.

If you don't have time to meditate, meditate twice as long. The best day to go to the gym is when you don't feel like it. If you feel like crap anyway, why not take the opportunity to do things you hate since the day is already ruined! Finally, the one thing Waynerchuck said that stuck with me, "doing the right thing is always the right thing". You know what to do, we all know something we should do. Do it, celebrate a little, then do it again.
@LycanFayn
@LycanFayn 2 жыл бұрын
This video didn't contain the depression caveat, and to be honest it might help... but there are some things which are just chemical, or just don't make sense, or are just a doomed cycle (like the mood where you're not interested in becoming interested, when you don't want to want to do anything, so you can't even bring yourself to take the steps to begin to escape the rut). Sometimes music, or napping, or a good video (see this one :P ) can bump me just enough to start making the motions to move on... but there are certainly times where you're just lacking the motivation to get motivated. And that sucks.

I was so uninspired the other day that I lay on my bed and starred at the ceiling. I noticed how many cobwebs were up there and eventually felt compelled to clean them up. Voila, something accomplished. I felt more inspired and cleaned a few other ceilings in other rooms. Now I was inspired, things were looking up⬆️

Thank you for the great advice! I used to have a very all or nothing approach to change in my life, and often spent time waiting for something to externally change before I did the work internally. Really just starting small and being proud of yourself along the way goes a long way. ❤️ I've been inspired by your openness in trying new habits or lifestyles, and reflecting on your experience. I've been living a lower tech life lately (inspired by your 30 days w/o internet) and it's made a noticeable difference in my focus, presence, and overall well being. So, thank you!

Something I've been doing is that I gave myself permission to not finish hobby projects by deciding to think of it as practice. I would get really demotivated by unfinished projects because I would feel a responsibility to finish them and like not finishing them would mean failure, which would also make it hard to start new things because I felt like I needed to commit to doing it 100%. But I thought about why I feel that way and I realized I do my hobbies primarily because I enjoy the action, not because I want the finished objects. So while trying to be economic with materials I decided that anything I don't finish is just a practice run for what I do finish and that's made me feel a lot more motivated

Kinser's Law is so relatable, but it actually affects my productivity in a very negative way. I write stories and songs, and I invariably have the same feeling whenever I finish one: I feel like I've learned so much from the process, that now the thing I've made looks really bad and I usually just shelve it and start something new hoping it'll be different this time. But it never is, because as long as I'm improving, I'll never look back on a finished project and be satisfied with it. I've rewritten the same novel 5 or 6 times now from beginning to end because as soon as I reach the end, the beginning looks absolutely amateur through my more experienced eyes. I think overcoming the pursuit of perfection is one of the most vital skills for productivity.

Well you just have to remember that in addition to Kinser's Law, there is also the Imposter Syndrome! We never feel that our work is good enough, but we judge ourselves much harsher than others will judge us. The story I use to inspire myself is my favorite author Stephen King. His famous novel that propelled his success was Carrie - and it was also his first novel! But he wasn't proud of it, he threw it away after writing it. It was only his wife fishing it out of the trash and pushing him to submit it to publishers that created the Stephen King we know today. Best of luck with the books!!
