I finally found the issue with my P.O.S. lb7 duramax. Aftere some research i found out later generation cp3's will work and even supply slightly higher fuel pressure when required from more aggressive tunes. The job is definitely time consuming, but if you need this part replaced it'll be well worth it. I was able to snag a low mileage lml for 300 bucks vs a remanufactured lb7 pump which would run around 1000 bucks....no brainer. All you need to do is swap over your lb7 fpr or get a new one and the new cp3 pops right in to place! This video is pretty lengthy and fairly tedious but i figured i would put it up to help someone see what the job is going to look like. I definitely didn't do everything perfectly, so please dont take my way as gospel. After i finished install i had leaks all over the place (which turned out to just be loose fuel lines), as well as issues with the glow plug module being re wired improperly. These were all my own fault and after i fixed them up, the truck ran great. The cp3 was swapped about 6 months (a few thousand miles) ago and it runs strong as hell. Thank you for this video and information! My lb7 has been giving me a headache of a time and I just ended up taking it to a mechanic friend for help. I keep getting the "service engine light" and P0093 code which is usually for the CP3 despite the readout saying fuel leak. Oddly, the darn code happens when I'm going up a hill and there's additional load on the engine. As far as the CP3 you used, you said you were able to use one from an LBZ instead? Does it perform better than the typical Lb7 CP3?

I'm doing this because of a crank and no start problem. First, it was ticking while cracking so I fixed a few wires going to the fuse box. After fixing the wires, tried starting it and it sounded like it was starving a fuel, or more like it was gurgling pretty much. Grabbed the field lines and put them into a diesel can, turns out there was no suction at all. So, hopefully changing out this nasty looking cp3 pump will finally start the truck and not shut off randomly which happened to the previous owner.

Yeah, did the injectors at 185,000. Dunno if they were original. But I wish I had saw this... because I would have swapped the fuel pump also. Thanks for the EFI tip!

I'm getting ready to take my stroker pump off and put my stock pump back on my lb7. I did the job about 5 years ago, but thanks for the refresher. 🤙🏽

@@cody6.6maxI returned the truck to stockish before selling it. Swapped that pump to the other truck I had at the time. Recently sold that truck too.

I have lb7 po1093 and po1094 code . Desired pressure is 20-23k and actual rail is at no more then 8k at wot. Drives , Idles fine . But when u stomp it , bam it’s a turd. I’m Thinking need cp3

I have been looking for a better video on what I might run into installing a CP3 LBZ sportsman. I really liked this video. You may want to change the title to something like LB7 CP3 to LBZ CP3. It may get you more views.

ISAAC NEREY thanks man! I’m slow as hell when it comes to this stuff. I’d say not including chasing down delivery trucks (for parts) it took me a solid 3-4 days.

How was you truck running before you replaced the cp3.. And what codes... Was it in reduced power mode?

Thrift Store it was running really low on power. Wouldn’t get out of its own way and wouldn’t rev over 2k rpm. I think the code was p0087 low rail pressure, it’s been a while since I replaced the pump (truck still runs great btw) hope this helps

interesting ... i just did my fpr tonight so im felling your pain... my truck was looping a little on start up and i figured it was the fpr... however ... now the truck is loping really bad and i have to give it the fuel pedal for it to smooth out... any ideas what i did.. ?

Tony Gatto it sounds like a pain but I would try reinstalling your old one and see what the idles like. If it’s the same as when you started you could’ve just gotten a bad part as well.

@@MrAgatto2 looks like I have to do a cp3 soon on my lb7. Owned it since new in 2002. Only 160k miles, did injectors with new (not reman) bosch injectors nov 2014 @ 120k miles. Last 2 yrs has been fine except towing. Got a cts3 a few weeks ago and can now monitor actual fuel rail pressure. 16k at 70mph steady state, but roll into it and it drops to below 11k when commanded FRP is 22k. Did the injector return test. 90ml vs 100ml max, so return rate is OK. Supply is 8 to 10psi on lift pump at all speeds and engine loads (at inlet to cp3). Shimmed the FPRV today as a last hail Mary fix and it didn't change a thing. Max psi at idle is only 18k with FPR commanding 23K. So that tells me the cp3 is weak. Did yours have these same symptoms? Did replacing the cp3 fix them?

I just did mine with the studs still in place on the intake , it was a pain in the ass but you can do it

What scan tool were you using at the end the check the pressure?

evan hale that was my ppe xcelerator tuner. Super handy little canned tuner. That feature is actually the reason I got it. Tunes work well too

If I have proper fuel pressure at Idle but whenever I get on it it falls on its face and goes into limp mode. Would you recommend replacing the whole CP3? the shop is saying replace the fuel pressure regulator but I’d hate to tear it all the way down to replace just the regulator and not the whole thing. Truck has 230k

Christopher Austin hmmm is it the original cp3? If it’s original I’d replace it (or upgrade) while you’re in there cause the fpr is right on the back of the cp3 anyway.

@@glyshorts9107 yeah wasn’t the cp3, but fuel lines and the fuel pump inside the tank itself! But I added the fass 150 to help it

Alejandro Soria before swapping it I was getting a low fuel pressure code...after swapping no codes related to fueling...I do have a code related to my glow plugs that I’ve just been too lazy to tackle 😭

Chanse Senn well, being the cheap ass that I am, Ive already installed an in line fuel pump from a detroit 6.5, and I worked well but I was still thousands of lbs of pressure low on desired vs actual fuel pressure, meaning the actual mechanical pump was shot

That obviously wasn't his problem. Lift pump can't work miracles.

Lol a lift pump pressure is quite a bit different than CP3 pressure. In the video he went from 2500 psi idle to over 6000. His old CP3 was shot.

Not on a duramax. That is not required.

then why the diesel does not rise will be because the injectors were changed and they have to be programmed lol

@@jomarpainting.elmilusos376 nope. Wrong on both counts. The duramaxs are plug and play, no timing or phasing for injectors or pump. Other trucks require it, Duramax does NOT require it. Do a little research, there isn’t even a way to do it.

jamesdeanvegas I went with an lml version, but the lbz would work as well. The have better designed internals and can build slightly higher rail pressure. Something like 26k max vs 24k from the lb7. So people say you can run slightly hotter tunes without running into fueling issues up top. Although the biggest reason was that the used lml version I got was 180 bucks vs 800 for a refurbished lb7 unit 😂 no brainer

Awesome. I’m gonna look into that I don’t like the feel of my lb7. Although six inch lift at 37 probably don’t help but still soft even after whole front end rebuild. Thanks for the vids.

@@mtotheizatt did you have any issues with using the lb7 FPR on the lml pump? All the suppliers say you have to have the ecu rescaled for the other pumps. But they most likely assume you're going to use the FPR that comes with the pump they sell. I just wanted to make sure you didn't have any issues, or had to wind up getting the ecu fuel pressure table rescaled

@@harrystearns1426 for me it was literally plug and play. I just took my original fpr out of the old pump and bolted it into the replacement. I do have a tuner on the truck but I didn’t have to adjust anything due to the new pump. But wow I didn’t know about the “rescaling” or whatever...maybe I should have. Although the truck has been running like an absolute champ since I replaced the pump. It’s still my daily and I tow with it and everything.
