Lyrics:
I wish that we could talk about it
But there, that's the problem
With someone new, I couldn't start it
Too late for beginnings
The little things that made me nervous
Are gone in a moment
I miss the way we used to argue
Locked in your basement
I wake up and the phone is ringing
Surprised, as it's early
And that should be a perfect warning
That something's a problem
To tell the truth, I saw it coming
The way you were breathing
But nothing can prepare you for it
The voice on the other end
The worst is all the lovely weather
I'm stunned it's not raining
The coffee isn't even bitter
Because what's the difference?
There's all the work that needs to be done
It's late for revision
There's all the time and all the planning
And songs to be finished
And it keeps coming and it keeps coming
And it keeps coming 'til the day it stops
And it keeps coming and it keeps coming
And it keeps coming 'til the day it stops
And it keeps coming and it keeps coming
And it keeps coming and it keeps coming
And it keeps coming and it keeps coming
And it keeps coming 'til the day it stops
I wish that we could talk about it
But there, that's the problem
With someone new, I couldn't start it
Too late for beginnings
You're smaller than my wife imagined
Surprised you were human
There shouldn't be this radio silence
But what are the options?
When someone great is gone, when someone great is gone
When someone great is gone, when someone great is gone
When someone great is gone, when someone great is gone
When someone great is gone, when someone great is gone
We're safe for the moment
Saved for the moment

Found out my dad passed away this morning. Nothing was wrong, he just didn't wake up. I took him to see LCD Soundsystem in 2010, it was the first time I saw him let loose and dance (to Drunk Girls I think). We shared tons of music, Sunday morning runs, afternoons reading Calvin and Hobbes together, and that won't happen again. It's gorgeous outside today, the coffee tastes the same. It's fucked to thing that despite what happened today, things will indeed just keep coming until the day it stops.

From the lyrics alone, I felt that the song was about losing his wife in childbirth. That tragic and beautiful interpretation is what I want to keep in my mind. "You're smaller than my wife imagined."
@loljustice31
@loljustice31 8 жыл бұрын
Ujjwal Das Gupta It wouldn't make sense for it to be about losing his wife in childbirth. When you say you think he was speaking to the baby when he says "you're smaller than my wife imagined," that would require for the "you" in the entire rest of the song to be directed at the baby, but it it's clearly directed at an adult (whom according to you is probably the wife). The speaker doesn't change who "you" is throughout the lyrics. Anyway, in general your interpretation sounds to me more like the sort of drama that women like to create angsty stories about (if any story is ever about women, then it's about their bodies in some way, pregnancy, babies, rape, victimization, childbirth, or something like that). As a woman I'm just so disappointed that women always seem to have these sorts of fantasies that only serve to cement all the stereotypes about women in society: a woman is supposedly always important first and foremost for her body, and specifically her role as a sex object or baby factory. You don't get to put yourself in that role and then cry about the way society perceives us as a gender.
@AxiomaticArt
@AxiomaticArt 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, my interpretation does require two different contexts for the word "you", but that's how I naturally heard the song :) I guess that is the thing about good art, it can mean different things to different people.

Woke up at 3 am, to a nurse telling me my dad had just passed. Half asleep I just couldn't put 2 and 2 together, took me a good minute to realize he was gone at 89. He was larger than life when I was a boy, as I aged I saw all the imperfections starting to show but I loved him more for it. Despite having the spirit of a fighter he was reduced to a fraction of his hulking past self by the time he passed. Life does go on, but as I grow older myself nothing is truer than The Son becomes the Father. And the Father becomes the Son.

It's now 8 years since I wrote this original comment. Looking back now I do see how this song and video holds up as a testament to that time and place. The styles, the type of parties, the apartment, the reflective and emotional tone of the song. I can't speak for everyone else who was there but I know for myself I moved to this new and fascinating place not knowing anyone and with an ambition. We were out there young, alone and in pursuit of something in this urban jungle with millions of others. We depended on each other for help in the careers we were pursuing and to create new social circles. I can only speak for myself but I'm sure many us found "someone great."

One morning I woke up spontaneously at about 7 AM with this song in my head. I hadn't heard it in a couple of months. I just thought it was curious. At some point that day, the news reported that the first female prime minister of Pakistan, Benazir Bhutto, had been assassinated. She was a huge hero of mine (even a fellow American University graduate). They gave the time in Pakistan that it happened. Something started bugging me about it, so I checked the Pakistan time zone against US EST time. She was killed at about the time I woke up with "When Someone Great is Gone" in my head. Just sayin'.

Bilal Khan During her first Prime Ministership, the evil Zia al Haq really controlled the country. She did not yet have the experience to take control. When she came back, the nearly as evil Mushareff fought her every step of the way because he knew she was going to push to dismantle the old corruption he fed on. I've studied this quite closely. And who in Pakistan now is not corrupt?

One afternoon a friend and I were listening to Pandora in the office rehashing old childhood tunes, when Kriss Kross' "Jump" came on. We were talking about backward clothes and just remembering the good times, and then the next day we learned that Chris Kelly had died. We did a little piecing together of the facts and we learned that we were listening to that song Probably within an hour of the death. I know it's just a coincidence, but it's a bit haunting to me

We all have "someone great" sometimes many "someones", and the world keeps turning, but our world stops. We also need to stop. Then take some bottles of water and healthy snacks, go to bed, and stay there until we feel like getting up. That day will come. It is healthy and healing to ride out the storm which rages in our souls, in the brokenness of our hearts, and in the chaos of our thoughts and feelings. Peace will arrive one day. I remember being in a coffee shop with my partner at that time (the only I’ve had until today), then this song came and I thought that would be the song I’d listen to if we ever break up, cause I think he’s great. So, here I am, 5 years later, writing this comment and listening to this in the AM. Kinda miss him sometimes…

I'm currently interning for a psychological clinic. And we recently had a deep dive into the clinic's consent forms. There was a provision there regarding client's records should the original therapist/psychologist became incapacitated in any form... This song immediately came into mind. While the clinic document was very blunt about it, this song made it (death) more real, and scary in a way. I hope that relationships/alliances, even those prematurely terminated, does not bring down but instead open up both parties to healing, growth, and transcendence.

This Video is fantastic. The black Silhouette is the 'when someone great is gone' he is referring to in the song. Its about the void that person leaves when you break up with them or perhaps when someone dies.They still resonate in your daily life after for a long time. This video is simple and clever like the song and therefore perfectly matched.

This song is so many emotions. Excitement because it came out at an exciting time in my life and I danced to it at parties and listened to it together with my fun friends, laughing and talking. Yearning. Because I yearn for the feelings I felt then. Joy, because it’s damn catchy and moves fast, the beat driving itself straight into my cranium. And hope. I feel hope when I hear it. A better day awaiting, somehow someway, when we will all dance again and laugh and pass a joint without any cares on a rooftop somewhere with a warm breeze blowing.

[Verse 1] I wish that we could talk about it But there, that's the problem With someone new I could have started Too late for beginnings The little things that made me nervous Are gone in a moment I miss the way we used to argue Locked, in your basement [Verse 2] I wake up and the phone is ringing Surprised, as it's early And that should be a perfect warning That something's a problem To tell the truth I saw it coming The way you were breathing But nothing can prepare you for it The voice on the other end [Verse 3] The worst is all the lovely weather I'm stunned it's not raining The coffee isn't even bitter Because what's the difference? There's all the work that needs to be done It's late for revision There's all the time and all the planning And songs to be finished And it keeps coming And it keeps coming And it keeps coming 'Til the day it stops And it keeps coming And it keeps coming And it keeps coming 'Til the day it stops And it keeps coming And it keeps coming And it keeps coming And it keeps coming And it keeps coming And it keeps coming And it keeps coming 'Til the day it stops [Verse 4] I wish that we could talk about it But there, that's the problem With someone new I could have started Too late for beginnings You're smaller than my wife imagined Surprised you were human There shouldn't be this ring of silence But what are the options? When someone great is gone When someone great is gone When someone great is gone When someone great is gone When someone great is gone When someone great is gone When someone great is gone When someone great is gone We're safe, for the moment Saved For the moment
