As a European above 50, what I like about this scene (or other chase scenes from 1970s Italian movies) is that there are real cars that we saw on the streets when we were young. Bullit chase scene might be magnificent, but for me the Mustang and the Charger belong to an alien world, I never saw one in the flesh. But a FIAT 124 special T and an Opel Rekord are perfectly integrated in my cultural background.

As ridiculous as some of the events seem, this is probably one of the most realistic car chases filmed. I'm pretty sure they just put a stunt driver in each car, and told them both that whoever drives the best gets free drinks all night long.

The drivers in this scene are Jean-Paul Belmondo (though in some cuts, it's driven by Rémy Julienne instead) on the red Fiat and Rémo Mosconi on the black Opel, however they used like ten different cars in the making of this scene (you can see it by the different angles of the rearview mirror and the shape of both cars in some cuts), but they are all painted red on the Fiat and black on the Opel so it's not too noticeable.

Even I could find the fiat of sixties on the roads! The chase could be one of the deadliest ever made! Both the cars performed pretty good, thanks to the manufacturers! Though there are many caa manufacturers all over the world, the fiats had a special place among the manufacturers of cars! Not just fiat, the lambrettaa, vespa, alfa romeo etc. had a good reputation around the globe! Whether its thermal power or fertilizer or plastics Italy's industrial might is an excellent model for every developing country!

Interesting, because many years after "the Burglars", Steve McQueen playing in his last movie "The "Hunter" in 1979 at his turn was inspired by scenes coming from a movie played by Jean-Paul Belmondo !! The movie was : "Fear over the City" 1975, also made by Henri Verneuil! A legendary scene in which J.P. Belmondo walked on the roof of a metro in motion in Paris! Steve McQueen did almost the same in Chicago wlaking on the roof of a train! It is official! Steve Mc Queen recognized that he had seen "Fear over the City" and that he did a similary scene in the "Hunter"..

You can tell that Red car was Rwd, the way he was drifting around those parked cars in that parking lot. Would be a nice car to own in today's day's, also a classic.

Both are RWD, but the larger car has more understeer designed into the suspension setup.

The good old days stunts by Rémy Julienne. He almost always worked with Belmondo. His choreographed stunt sequences are usually destructive, with high-speed chases and highly realistic vehicle behaviour. French car manufacturers, notably Renault and Citroën, frequently called on his services for their TV and film commercials. He is the one who drives the Fiat.

My grandfather drives the FIAT 124 and we are Greek and Rémy Julienne drives the OPEL....Many people mistakenly believe that Rémy Julienne drives the FIAT 124 but it was actually my grandfather who was a stuntman back at the time.

Wow! What a scene! What the hell Remy Julien did behind the wheel of an old Opel Rekord, a real boat... When he passed away, in Paradise he surely got in charge as St. Peter's chauffeur.
