One I find your videos super soothing. But also. Watching you add the solder really helps explain why newer people's looks so janky your so perfectionist with it and I love it and hope I can be as good one day! I posted a call out on Facebook to see if any of my friends do stained glass so I could have a hangout. Bring my soldering iron, pay for supplies needed and be able to use their grinder. So I could see of this is an extra hobby I want to take on lol. I've always been obsessed with stained glass

Thank you so much for covering came and so easy to understand. Also, I enjoyed watching you solder. I recently watched a video with an art teacher and he taught his students to tape the came down to make it more manageable when applying. Maybe that could help you. Big fan from Washington State 😃

I really really love your videos! I am a stained glass artist myself and find your videos are the most helpful ones out there. (Especially when it comes to patina. I am shocked that noone is wearing gloves x.x Here in Germany we are so cautious when handling patina.)

Hi 👋 Rachel , I just recently saw Your channel on My feed . Thank Yous for Your videos . I have always been wanting to make Stain Glass since a Child . I just saw a YT video from Cutting Edge Stain Glass Studio , She used a Vice ( affixed to a very solid and sturdy table ) and pulled , stretched with pliers and Body weight , the Lead . Your videos are amazingly helpful, thankyou 😍 I was wondering what kind of marker you are using for drawing on the glass? I've been using oil based paint markers and baking them on in the oven, which seems to have fully fired it on *until* I paint on flux for soldering, which seems to just dissolve it. Watching you paint flux over these lines just fine, I'm desperate to know what you're using!

Hello, I really like how you have organized your KZfaq channel and the detailed information you provide in the videos and in the description. I am a beginner stained glass artist. Could you please tell me if you have a video showing and explaining how you put the wire/cantel decorative element (which is on the pumpkin)?? I am wondering what material it is made of and is a special flux used to solder it? I bought a wire, but the solder does not join the wire. Please help me.

I prefer 410 for my iron and occasionally turn it up to 460!

Thanks for such an informative video!! I thought I was absolutely ready to start using lead came. However, you described them in RU #s and when I'm trying to shop, nobody is using those terms that I can find. Some websites are using 1/8" round vs. 3/16" round. Amazon is just calling them 5/64" round. Now I'm so confused. I just want to do mostly small / medium projects, with a nice came edge. I had settled on RU100 as you described but can't figure out how that translates to the selling websites and their measurements.

I tried my best to give as much info as possible - glad you liked the video! The above issue you described is exactly why I went with a stained glass supplier for ordered versus ordering on Amazon (although i know this is not always possible as Amazon is much more accessible). I believe the easiest option would be to convert the fractions to millimeters and compare with what I include in the video (or, on a stained glass suppliers website). I apologize this comment is so late, I'm sure you've already found a solution!

Thank you thank you! Any suggestions for how to match the finish of the came to the solder? I really want to do a silver polish on the entire piece but haven’t had luck making that happen.

The color is going to vary slightly - the came is usually darker than the solder once polished when left silver. Most lead came accepts black patina but I havent had luck with copper patina on the ru70 or su54 (and I haven't tried copper on the smaller came)

You should try a honeycomb board or even cork, for large things like Windows you would use this method- using something like a thumb- tack to keep everything tight n stationary- as someone who's had a project slip just b4 contact w the iron- or burnt fingers, trust me it helps, u can cut your own lil staples from steel wire- cork from $ store- it don't need to b fancy

Hi there! I dont see why you wouldn't be able to use the iron you have, although I know irons that are used for electronic soldering have reaaallllyyyy tiny tips and arent good for stained glass. I use 60/40 solder, which can be ordered from most stained glass supply websites (Delphi, anything in stained glass, etc)

This video is so helpful! I haven’t used came in a long time, but I prefer the finish it gives. I have a question: when using came for a foiled piece like this, do you have to cement the edges how you would for a completely came piece?

Thanks for watching! I totally agree - came gives such a polished and professional finish to a piece! No, you do not need to cement the edges. Theres two main methods of finishing edges with plain came depending on if you're using hobby came or thicker came. 1) applying only came with no foil underneath. This is preferred if using a thick came or if finishing shorter edges with hobby came. Generally when using thick came it will be sturdy enough and have enough attachment points to the solder lines of the main piece to not wiggle or move out of place. 2) applying came over foiled edge and soldering the came to the foil. This is preferred for hobby came with longer edges. In these cases I use 1/4" foil for the edges (although depends on glass thickness. If glass is thinner, 7/32 will sometimes suffice). I hope that makes sense/helps!

Hey! Quick question. How do I prevent my foil and soldering from falling off edges if I'm not using lead came? I'm kind of new and inherited all my supplies. I just haven't gotten around to buying hobby came yet, and I made a corner piece yesterday. The edges I soldered ended up peeling up. This video really helped me decide which came I should get so thank you haha.

When ordering came from the site you linked, how much would you suggest ordering as a hobbyist (I'm sure you order more than I would)? I see that it comes in 6 ft rolls, but I can't quite visualize how much I'd need for say, 5 medium sized projects since I've never used it! Any suggestions? One roll per 2 projects maybe?

Thanks for doing this video, Rachel! I’ve seen two different ways to add U came to the border, one with foiling the edges and soldering the came directly to the edges and the other being the way you just demonstrated. I was doing it the former way but found that it looks quite messy by the end. I tried this technique, but on a piece with very few solder lines meeting the edge so there is nothing anchoring the came to the edge and it slightly pulls away under the weight of a jump ring. I’m nervous the came will stretch with time and pull away from the edge. Ever have this issue? Thanks!!

I've absolutely had this problem! Theres a part in the video where I briefly address this. For areas that need extra support I put a small strip of foil, usually half an inch or so, and then solder the cane to that. It helps keep the mess down but helps add that extra little bit of stability :)

Hi again Rachel, when you add the jump ring, does that need to connect to a solder seam at the back? Or to the came? And do you use two for something this size? Thank you as always ❣️

I usually try to connect to both! At a minimum, definitely the solder seam. Unless the project is very small, attaching only to lead will eventually stretch it out.

2 questions! What stained glass paint do you use? Also for adding wire for details and patterns do you get tinned copper wire or just copper wire does it matter?

Hi! I use pebeo Vitrea 160. As for copper wire, pre-tinned is easier although theoretically plain copper wire should work just fine. It's mostly just a pain have to tin it yourself! I purchase my wire in a glass store and dont know where they get theirs from.

What temperature did you keep your Hakko iron on during this project? I always have trouble with black specks happening in my solder, even when I try lowering the temperature.

I had it at 410 for this entire video. It sounds like you might just need to clean the tip better - I tend to get black specks when my sponge is a bit too dirty. I usually wipe the tip every 4th or 5th solder stroke

Where do you buy your came from? Also would you recommend RU-90 for my piece which is measuring 22 inches by 22 inches? It only goes around the border of the whole piece, right?

I buy my came from anythinginstainedglass.com. I find RU-90 is a VERY tight fit and can only be used with thinner glass. I like RU-70 for my big projects and it gives me plenty of wiggle room. At 1:34 I talk about the sizes and how they compare

It depends on the size, but I personally have never done a fully leaded piece. The largest I've made was about 21x15 inches and copper foil for everything plus a lead came border was just fine. There's ways to reinforce but I've never made something big enough to require it. As for any other information regarding leaded glass, you'll have to check out other people's tutorials :) stainedglassdiy does a lot with fully leaded glass!

@SunBearGlassCraft So I started stained glass and am working on my second piece. You were right I love it. It's so rewarding. And so many hours spent on your videos already. I want to use came around this one because its kind of big. My question is, if the lead came is tacked onto my piece every 4 inches or so, is stretching it really necessary? In my mind it seems like it has enough contact to not need it. If I was just putting a frame of came around the piece, and it was only tacked in the corners, the stretching would definitely be needed. Any thoughts? Thanks again for everything you put on youtube

That tells me you don't see anything wrong and just decided to not like her for whatever reason. You are attacking one of the most helpful creators on youtube, the only positive from this is your interactions come off as positive engagement for the youtube algorithm so you are helping Sunbear get in front of more people not less. As far as what I've experienced, you will always kind of smoosh the lead when you cut it. I cut mine as quickly as possible to try and get a nice sharp edge. If you do crush it, I will go back in a cut the sides down individually to create a nice chisel point. I hope that last part makes sense! Thanks so much for watching 🥰
