Very often your best performance follows an improved movement within the lead wrist.
Understanding how the wrist needs to move from its set up condition to its impact condition is explained in this video along with 2 drills that will help you do this in your swing.

I love how you have made this so easy to understand. I little forward press at the start and flatten the wrist at the top. I watched this video once and understood it straight away. I took it to the course the next day and saw immediate improvement. Better contact and accuracy the more holes I played. Thank you so much. Hopefully I can reverse the direction my handicap is heading and get some good results. Awesome job

Excellent lesson and explanation chris. I struggled with that for a while, one thing that isn’t mentioned often enough though is why (or rather how) the hands end up slightly forward of setup. It’s worth mentioning that the shaft lean is a result of a proper turn. Initially, I focused terribly on hanging onto those angles to bring the hands ahead of the ball, which introduced more problems than the flip I tended to have.

I've cupped my right wrist at the top of my swing for years. I'm left handed. This caused me a host of problems which varied depending on my timing on any particular day. It would usually cause me to come down at a steep angle with an open club face blocking my shot to the left, or in an attempt to correct this I would snap my right wrist closed through impact causing low hooking shots. I did this without realizing what the problem was. I'm self taught. So never had anyone point this out to me. Your videos have been very helpful
@golferiam6533
@golferiam6533 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Chris. My problem has been with a push fade to a push slice. The longer the club length the farther right and more curve. My PW would start about 5 yards right and end up about 15 yards right and would be very high. The reason, as you suggested, was my hands not being raised at impact. My left wrist was in good impact shape except the wrist cock was not fully released. Couple that with not quite clearing my left hip and I was hoping OB was not down the right side of the fairway. I ended up aiming left of the left fairway line and usually used the entire width of the fairway on my drives and fairway woods. So, I watched this video, took note of your positions and hit my indoor "range". Sure enough, the club face was more square at impact and I gained about 7-8 yards on my 9 iron. At this point, it is a conscious thought during the swing but I will work on it for the rest of the winter to make it "automatic" and put it to a real test on a golf course this spring. The one point of raised hand position at impact seems to have solved my problem. Again, thank you.

Just as an extra thought, if I "hit at" the ball I find the bowed left wrist at impact impossible. If I start down with my lower body before completing my backswing I've a lot more time to get my hips out of the way and chest and arms further along in the downswing which seems to hugely aid a bowed left wrist at impact? That right?

Great video as always. What's different to other online instructors is that you always provide a aid or a task so that I know I'm understanding and performing the drill correctly, so my feel is real. At what point does the arm disconnect from the hanger?
@bwstokie
@bwstokie 3 жыл бұрын
For me personally I found I am a far more consistent and powerful ball striker if my setup is closer to my impact position. My swing trigger is a slight forward shaft lean. If I don’t do that I feel disconnected and strike suffers. Personally don’t think the golf swing is as technical as it is made out to be and there is a natural swing for everyone. No one really over thinks throwing or kicking a ball.

THIS is the video I needed at this very moment in time. Working on my wrist angles and positioning at impact as I'm closing the face too much and not creating enough forward shaft lean, which is leading to a 25-30 yard draw instead of the 5-15yard draw I want and slightly too low spin. This video couldn't have come at a better time. Thanks again Chris!!!

Good video. I have yet to see any pro understand the trail hand position for the average golfer. I started golf at 17 (too late) and was never able to bend my trail wrist back far enough to keep the club on the inside on the downswing. Start playing pre-teens, this won't be a problem with greater flexibility. I have found my own solutions now (at 70) but many, if not most, club golfers struggle and pros, who mainly start pre-teens or early teens, do not seem aware of this problem. You are quite flexible but I notice some slight difficulty in your trail wrist. I guess you did not start golf pre-teens?

Some golfers use a forward press to start their swings. Is the forward press to flatten the wrist early or just to get the club in motion to start the swing? Are they actually flattening their wrist with the forward press or just moving the handle slightly ahead of the clubhead with no flattening?

CR you are definitely talking to me. My problem is several fold: The design of my arms forces me to setup in the impact position (can't change the way they're built). In order to set (cock) my wrists to 90 degrees, I have to cup them at the top (no cupping results in no more than 60 degrees of set). AND 100%, if my lead wrist is not flat to bowed at the bottom, very very bad things can happen. Still, I suppose I can take some comfort in your description of someone (like me) that shoots 70 something all the time as "extremely athletically gifted" with all those deficits. :-) But I sure as hell would fix all that stuff if I could make it work.

Chris - a few things confuse me; if I flatten my left wrist it closes the clubface and the ball goes left and low? How is flattening the wrist a different concept than having shaft lean when hitting irons; if you have forward shaft lean the wrist is going to be flatter?
@dazalenko4250
@dazalenko4250 3 жыл бұрын
Great video! A simple analogy is if you try to backhand slap someones face with your wrist starting from a cupped position working to a flat impact position it is ten times slower than if your wrists start in a bowed position working to a flat position at impact, so in the same way starting the downswing with a cupped wrist robs power.

Thanks creating a lot of great content! I’ve been really struggling with consistent ball striking and am wondering whether I should focus more on my wrists. On the top of my back swing my lead wrist is bent so that the wrist is facing straight up in the sky. I understand there’s a lot of variables in a swing, but is that an okay starting point for the downswing or should it be more “neutral”?

I don't understand why we need any wrist cock at all? What does it add to the swing? it seems that if we preset impact and hold it through the back swing we should be in a pretty good impact position with shaft lean at impact.
@cscoetzee
@cscoetzee 3 жыл бұрын
Try taking a short backswing (club parallel to ground or slightly higher) without any wrist cock, and hit the ball. Then do the same backswing but allow your right hand to hinge (which will also cock the left wrist). Now hit the ball, allowing hands to unhinge/uncock. You should feel a big difference in power and ease of hitting the shot, compared to hitting without any wrist cock.
