Hi Julie, If you're having some trouble putting this together, cut 6 -4"x4" cheap clear glass pieces and work on putting them together, before you start cutting up you're good glass. You can use the clear one as a trial run. You will only be out a little U Came and some solder. After you get where your comfortable putting it together, you can cut the U Came off at the solder joints and use it on another project. Let me know how you're doing with the project. Best of luck!!! Hi Jan, Thanks for your kind words, so glad you found the video to be helpful and so glad you're going to give Leaded Came a try. Over the years I have done both Leaded Came and Copper Foil and always liked the look of Leaded Came better. I don't know if you have had a chance to look at some of the Solar Lantern videos, there are three that have both Leaded Came and Copper Foil in the same project. The Came I use is made by Cascade Metals, they have a great web site that tells all about Lead Came. Check it out when you have time. The two different Cames I use in all these videos are RU-70 U Came, and HR-9 H Came. I just posted a video doing a review of all the Solar Lanterns we have made videos on, check it out when you have time. You can also check the video out that shows what kind of projects I I'm making when not making these little video projects. Again, thanks for your kind words and the best of luck with your adventure into Leaded Came. Keep in mind that one of the biggest things to remember is that Lead Came melts at around 750 degrees, so you will need to have a soldering iron that you can regulate the heat on. I use a Waller 100-Watt Iron and it has a 700-degree tip on it. When I do the Copper Foil, I change the tip 800 degrees. There are a lot of voltage regulator's out there that can help keep your soldering iron at the right Temp. When you first start check your iron on an old piece of came and make sure it's not too hot. There's nothing worse than to get your project all together and the first thing you do is on your first solder joint melt the lead when you go to solder it because you didn't check the temp on your iron. Hi Again, The panels for the spinners are 4"x4" and you need 6 of then, they have U Came on all four sides. The H Came for the inside depending on what you do with the inside will vary. I would buy 12' of each to be sure you will have enough. If you don't have a regular glass store to buy the Came from you can find it on Amazon along with other online stores. You also can make this spinner using the copper foil system, it's a little harder to put the hanger on the copper foil, but if you have been making suncatchers you shouldn't have any trouble. You can also make the inter part of the panels in copper foil and finish off the outside edges with lead U came. Check out my video on the flower solar lantern's and the one with the sea glass! If you are new to Lead Came, go to Cascade Metals and print out their Lead Came chart, it shows all the different sizes and styles of Lead Came. It's in decimals, but there is a box to check to turn it to fractions. I have had several people tell me that I miss pronounced PATINA!! I think next time I will just say I'm going to put on some stuff to make the lead and solder black!! Don't you think Pantene sounds much fancier than Patina!! HAHA!! Good afternoon, I use RU-70 U came and RH-9 H came for all my leaded glass projects. This came is made by Cascade Metals, they are one of the biggest makers of lead came. You can go on their website and check out all the different sizes for lead and zinc cames. The chart for lead came comes up in decimals, there is a box to check to turn them into fractions. Hi Karen, Nice to hear from you again. The small strips on the spinner jig are, 3/16" square and are made of wood. I just cut them out on a table saw. So glad you're enjoying the videos, you should check out the newest one on how to make a Leaded Glass Hanging Terrarium, in it I talk about the small jig I use to put the sides together in it. It's the same one I use to put the spinner into sets of two before I use the spinner jig to do the final assembly on the spinner. If you are using a different size U came you would make a small strip to match the size of your came width. You just want the edges of the two pieces to kiss the outer edge of the came, If your real new to leaded glass you could just cut 6 4"x4" clear window glass and put it together to get a trial run before using your expensive glass. I sometime use scrap clear glass when I'm trying to work out a problem on a project. @@billstonesstainedglasscrea3310 I do have a question for you I’ve made my own mini spinner, and it turned out OK (husband’s going to make me a jig) but in the meantime, what size of a swivel should I use and do I put it at the bottom next to the spinner or up at the top and do I use small chain or cord to hang it from?

Hi LaDonna, So glad you made a spinner project!!! The Swivels I'm using are a #6 Stainless Steel with welded rings. I get them online from Amazon at Fish Trip Store. They are over kill for the weight of these projects, but I like the way they look. You could use a smaller swivel if you would like. Check them out and you will see there are a lot of different sizes to pick from. That's a great question, I have been putting my swivels at the bottom next to the spinner. My though on doing that is the chain has a certain amount of twist to it before it starts to spin the spinner. I'm not sure that's true or not!!! I hang all my projects with a # 16 Jack Chain made by Campbell, its zinc plated and won't rust. I also use a # 10 split ring on the project to hook the swivel and chain to it. On the other end of the chain, I use a #11 or larger Split Ring to hang it up with. Again, these things can all be found on Amazon. If your using my Cotter Pin idea for your hanger you can also get them there. They are 1 1/2" x 3/32" zinc plated. Hopefully that helps you and best of luck with your projects. Can you help me with a pattern question? I am doing a window panel with the Air Force emblem for my son, but I’m struggling with the pattern I can’t wrap my mind around where I cut the pattern versus where I cut the glass. The pattern I found has a very thick, black edging that would be perfect for all of my solder, so do I Cut within that line and then just add it to each glass piece or is there a better way?

Hi again, The black lines an most patterns are the lead lines for the project. If you don't care if the project grows a little you can use a pair of standard scissors and cut the pattern apart right in the center of the black lines. If you don't want it to grow, then you need to cut the pattern with a pair of pattern scissors for Lead Came. These scissors cut out a small strip for the Lead Came to fit. If you're going to use copper foil, you would use pattern scissors for copper foil, they also cut out a smaller strip of your pattern. There are a couple video projects showing these pattern scissors, unfortunately I can't remember which ones they are!! So many of my projects are what I call cut and stack, I don't care if they grow a little. If you only have the one pattern, be sure to make a copy before you cut it apart. Hopefully this helps you out!!! I have a Grandson in the Air Force; He has been for over 12 years and is planning to retire from it. I will check a couple videos and see if I can find the ones with the pattern scissors in it, If I find it, I will send you a reply!!! Best of luck with your project!! Regards, Bill Stone

Hi Gloria, Glade you are enjoying the videos. I use RU-70 U came, it's 1/4" wide, 5/32" channel and 3/16" Face. The H Came is RH-9, It's 7/32 Wide, 3/16" channel and 5/32" Face. You can check all the came sizes by going online and type in Cascade Metals. They are a large supplier of lead came. The chart comes up in decimals, there is a box to check to make it into fractions. I use this came for all my projects, big or small. I don't know if you looked at the video on the leaded glass clock? At the end of that video, it shows some of the larger window projects made with that same size came. If there is any draw back to that came, it's that you have to cut your glass very accurate as there is a very small channel for the glass to fit into!!! Hi again, You're right the more precisely your glass is cut the less room the glass has to move around in the came. I have been making these Solar Lanterns, Suncatchers and Spinners for the past 20 years and I've never had one come apart yet!! Also glazing the glass panels is my least favor part of doing leaded glass, it's messy and a lot of work and time to clean it up after glazing it. Try it both ways and see if you see any difference in your small projects. Glazing the panels will make them stronger. Best of luck on your projects. Regards, Bill Stone

The small strips on the large jig are 3/16" square and lets the edges of the came just kiss each other to give you a nice clean solder joint. Hi, The came in all my projects are made by Cascade Metals, they have a great web page on lead came, check it out when you have time. The lead came I use is RU-70 for the U came and RH-9 for the H came. If you haven't used lead came before, be sure to stretch it before you use it. If you're not sure how to do this check out my video on how to make a solar lantern for the beginner, it will show you how to stretch the came. This is the first video I made and is at the very end of the list when you go to my KZfaq channel. If you check out Cascade Metals, just look at the lead came spec sheet to get all the sizes for the came I am using. So glad you are going to try the leaded glass system, I like it much better than copper foil, but sometimes the project can only be done in copper foil so it's nice to know how to do both systems. You can buy it from any glass supply store, E Bay, Delphi Glass and Amazon. Most of the time it comes in a roll, this is fine because when you stretch it. It will come out straight. I buy my lead came in 6' strips from my glass supplier. I hope this was helpful, please feel free to ask me anything about any of my video projects.

RU-70 U Came has a face width of 1/4" and a channel width of 5/32". RH-9 H Came has a face width of 5/32" and a channel width of 3/16". These Lead Cames are made by Cascade Metals, check out their web page, they have a great chart you can print out showing all the different sizes of Lead Came. The other two Lead Cames you are asking about are RH-8 which has a face width of 5/32" and a channel width of 5/32" which is just a little smaller than the RH-9 Lead came. The RH-10 which has a face width of 7/32" and channel with of 3/16". Either of these Lead Came sizes would work for you. If your new to using Leaded Came, check out my video Leaded Glass Solar Lantern for Beginners!!, It's the very first one I did and shows you about tools and how to starch the came and several other tips on leaded glass projects. Hi Monti, So glad that info was helpful to you. There are several places to check out to purchase lead came. I see it on E -BAY a lot and sometimes it has free shipping. Amazon also has lead came and a lot of supplies for the stained-glass artist. You can also check out Delphi Glass on the internet, they have all kinds of different supplies also. Hopefully you can find what you are looking for. Do you have a stained-glass supply store close to where you live? Also, Hobby Lobby has some stain glass supplies. Hi again, glad you found Cascade Metals web page, lots of info on all kinds of came. You wouldn't want to use Zinc came for these small projects, it's way too hard to work with, you have to saw it to cut it to the sizes you need. The only time I use zinc came is for the outside boarder on the larger projects I make to help strengthen them. Check out my video called What Keeps Me Busy When Not Making the Small Video Projects. Some of these larger windows have a zinc boarder on them. All most all of these windows were made using the same lead came as I use on the smaller projects. They are bordered with 9/32" zinc H came and then glazed to give them more strength. All of these larger windows were made over this past year. Hi Carol, So sorry you are having trouble with the spinner jig. I took a look at my spinner videos and at the 20:36 marker it shows a good picture of the jig. The video with the crystal ball in it also shows a good picture of the jig at the 54:24 marker on the video. You can just fast forward to these markers and check out the pictures of the jig. I can't take credit for the spinner jig; I got it from another video on KZfaq. Check Her video on spinners, her name is Michelle Arnott and she has a lot of spinners on her channel. Her spinner jig is made using a 4"x4" fence post. The dimensions on my jig are as follows. The two legs are 8" long and 6" high and the upright end piece is 4"x4" and 10" tall. The small ledge around the upright piece is 3/16"x 3/16". Maybe you have a family member that works with wood that could help you make one. This would also be a great project for a high school student that's in wood shop. You can also pause the video and take a screen shot with your phone so you can show people what you want to make. You could also go to Home Depot and have them cut you some pieces to the size you want to make your jig. I made my jig much larger than Her's because I wanted to be able to make larger spinners than the 4" jig would allow. Hi Joey, Great to hear from you. Yes, the top of my build table is made of 1/2" Homasote #440- Sound Barrier Board. The worktable has a 3/4" plywood base with the Homasote board on top. You can purchase this at most old fashion Lumber Yards. It comes in a 4'x8' sheet 1/2" thick. Most lumber yards will cut it to the size you need. The push pins I use are 5/8" long, they also make a 1/2" pin but I like the longer pins better. If you are just starting out in leaded glass and don't want to buy the larger sheet you can find it on Amazon and Delphi Glass, in 24"x24" sheets. If you can use the larger size sheet then go for that, it is much cheaper than the smaller sizes per square foot. I use this pen system on all my larger glass projects also. Hi Mary Things for your comment. Yes, your right, because the scoring wheel is in between the two up rights on your glass cutter you do add to each cut and the projects grows a little. What I do to compensate for this is I will cut the glass to the sizes I want using these standard rulers then set up my form to make the project. Stating in the left-hand corner with a 90-degree angle install my U Came down the side and across the bottom leaving it long on purpose. Then install my glass in the order I want it to go with my H Came in between the glass pieces. When I get then all in place, I put a piece of U Came down the other side, then I will add my form to make up the size of the project. By doing this that way you can use these standard size rulers. If you don't do it this way, then you will have to come up with a smaller ruler approximately 1/16" small then the size you want to be your finished piece of glass. I hope that makes sense to you. When you have some time check out my first video called Leaded Glass Solar Lantern and it shows that on the video, where I cut the glass using a, 2", 1", 3/4" and 1/2" ruler to make piece which would measure 4 1/4" although I need the project to be 4 1/2" wide, after adding the U Came Around all sides and the H Came in-between it comes out at about 4 9/16". @@billstonesstainedglasscrea3310 yes it makes perfect sense. I have watched all the videos and the instructions and tips are very helpful, especially using the cotter pins as hooks. I only work with lead and was excited to watch the spinner video. I was under the assumption they were always done with copper foil! My next project 😃😃😃. Then on to the lanterns! Hi Mary, So glad the info I sent was helpful. I have always liked Leaded Glass better than Copper Foil; I like the nice lines it makes so much better than the solder bead on Copper Foil. Almost all the larger projects I make are all Lead Came. Did you look at the video WHAT I DO WHEN NOT MAKING THESE KZfaq VIDEOS!! there are several Copper Foil projects in there along with all the Leaded Glass projects. Check it out when you have time. Back to your original question regarding the Came makes your project grow. When you make your own designs up like most of my projects, I use what I call Cut and stack and don't really care if they grow a little. The only time I have to be sure to make the project to size is when it has to fit into windows or doors, then it's important that it fits!! Best of luck with your spinner. Regards, Bill Stone

Hi Rosa, Thanks for your comment on the video. The emery boards I use are from Amazon and are for your feet. The brand name is Makartt Premium 100/180 grit. I use them to smooth out the ends of the panels. I just watched the video and if you follow it, I think it will help you out with some of your questions. One of the most important ones to watch is how to make the form so they are all exactly the same size, if they are all different sizes they will never come together right for you. That is at the 19:15 minute of the video, how to finish the ends of the panels is at the 25:50-minute mark and how to put it together is at the 30:00-minute mark. No machine involved, just take your time and don't rush through the assembly step of the project. Hi Monti, So sorry to hear you had problems with the spinner project. I'm not familiar with the Motton layout system so I don't know how it works. I would suggest you take another look at the video and maybe you can see where you got messed up. In the video you will see I always make a from to make these panels all the same size, that is the trick to getting the spinner together and get the sides to line up. If the panels and all different sizes it will never go together right for you!! Take it apart and make a form and rebuild it so all 6 panels are the same size and see if that doesn't do the trick for you. Did you make a jig to put it together? In the video you will see I first put the panels together in sets of 2 panels each, they put them on the jig to put them all together. Best of luck and I hope that helps you out. Hi Mary Beth, Glade you are enjoying my videos, I just use standard Lead cutting Shears, also called Fan Out Lead Nippers. You can purchase these at any glass store, or from Amazon and other online glass stores. Take another look at the video on the spinner around the 12-minute mark I do show the lead cutter. Hi Traci, Thanks for your kind words, glad you're enjoying the videos. The small strips of wood are 3/16' square, which lets the edges of the two panels just kiss each other. This gives you a nice fit to solder the two together. The big jig uses the same size wood strip to put the group of two together, remember to check your fit to make sure you don't have any gaps in between the two panels. 70 years ago, my father told me there were no dumb questions, just dumb mistakes, because you didn't ask a question on how to do something!! The product I use to turn the lead black is Patina for lead and solder and is made by Novacan. This swivel is way overrated for what we need for the hanger BUT I like the physical size of it.
