I remember when I worked for a company and suddenly I got really really ill. I was in pain for weeks, couldn't eat properly, could barely breath or move, I was close to ending my own life. My boss got me into a meeting (call) with HR to tell me they were looking into "letting me go" because I was off sick on a doctor's note for a few weeks. And this after I worked day and night for that company for years. Sadly this is the reality for lots of people... Honestly, I am glad I am not with that life sucker of a company anymore.

I had this issue with my employees, I asked them what's wrong wether there's a problem at home or if they are not feeling very good I even suggested to them a two weeks leave nothing worked untill the day I told them that if they don't come early I will fire them from that day I have less problem with them.

Disagree strongly. Empathy is not a leadership trait. In this example, three periods of poor performance shows leadership fails on both people. Empathy only makes the situation feel better for one person, it does not solve the problem.
