Leak Testing my RV Propane System with a Digital Manometer

In this video, I demo a new RVing repair and maintenance gadget a friend gave me to try out. It's a digital manometer for testing the RVs LP gas system. It measures gas pressure by the Inches of Water Column (inH2O) allowing me to quickly check the correct reading and for a possibility of leaks.

Very good details and yes you're doing it correctly and yes the outside Gasport is a wonderful way of doing it and you can buy the adapters for that at any RV parks department

Glad to see some good information about propane systems. The test you used is the second best way to determine a gas leak in the fuel system. The best way is by having a licensed gas technician conduct the test. (Don't beat me up for that one, that's my disclaimer.) Without getting into too many details, I'll try to add some more information that may be helpful... By reducing the pressure the way you did, all of the diaghrams in the regulators will hang open calling for fuel. This means that you are testing the system from the valve on the cylinders right to the valves on the appliances (good test). Couple of suggestions. Add the extra piece of hose you have to the other fitting on the digital manometer, that will help to stabilize the fluctuating readings, especially if doing this outside with any air movement. Any connections past the appliance gas valves should be leak tested with liquid leak detector at the operating pressure (11 inches) after the leak test. The liquid leak detector you used is designed for the purpose so no need to wipe it off. Many people use a mixture of soap and water that may be corrosive to the fuel lines if not wiped off after testing. Finally, if you ever want to verify the accuracy of your digital manometer just connect it to the same gas manifold as your "U" tube manometer. The "U" tube is always the most accurate. 40 year gas technician from Canada.

Very informative! I like the idea of rigging an adapter to utilize the external quick connect port for leak checks. This particular unit is $35 (US) on Amazon with 70% 5 star reviews.

I'm always a little concerned about the rubber hoses after 5 or 10 years. So I can see at least an annual check being nice. Mind you you might need to run the bubble solution on the entire length of the rubber hose and not just at the joints.

Thanks for the video, I am trying to learn how to use a Manometer for checking my propane heaters and appliances. Was the hose hooked up to the positive side and the negative side left open? thanks.

Yes, just hooked up to one side and it measures the difference in pressure from the gas system to regular air

The electronic manometers may not be accurate right out of the box. Do not rely on its readings. It will need to be calibrated before use according to a water column manometer to insure accuracy. The cheap one I bought was way off, out of the box. Test instruments usually should be recalibrated at least once a year.

Hi, and thank you very much for the video. Do you by chance happen to know what would be an acceptable drop in a manometer? I'm starting around 10.86 and it's dropping down to about 10.65 after a few hours. Is there a chart out there that I can use to measure this?

I know this video is a couple of years old now but I'm trying to figure out why I can't get my Furrion oven pilot to light. The stove top works fine so I have two propane lines obviously. I suspect it may be the regulator because there is no sound and no smell of propane in the oven but I want to check it. Any idea how I would do that? Disconnect the side of the regulator that goes to the oven and attach the hose from the manometer and then turn on the propane to see if it shows a reading? Of course this would be all on me and for entertainment purposes only :-)

Ray, along the lines of checking your propane I cant open one of my tanks. I wouldn't worry about it but the tank is full. Any advice?

I'd take it to a propane supply shop, they can replace the tap.

@@LoveYourRV Thanks. I just received my digital manometer yesterday. It came with a fitting that has a nipple on one site to fit the tubing that comes with meter and the other side is threaded. I took that fitting to Home Depot and found that 3/8" ID tubing fits on the threaded side. That size tubing also fits over the burner spot on the stove. I may have to put a zip tie around it to tighten it if it leaks. Im going to try it out this weekend to test my system like you did. You could buy one of these fittings in brass at Home Depot or Lowes to make it work. It is where the tubing stuff for ice makers is at.

Yes, I explained in the video that the stove regulator passes pressure back, so it tests the whole system for leaks. I demoed that it works using my Buddy Heater see here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f9yTerl3m9HVqqc.html Only caveat is to make sure your stove is the same as mine. If not then I don't know the answer.
